opinion on two person closes (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Ukendr
hello! I’ve been a partner since July 2021 and I was promoted to Barista Trainer around June 2022, this is just sort of a rant/ me wanting to know everyone’s thoughts on two person closes or how many people should close a store.

For reference, I’m in the DMV area, a college town and the store closes at 9:30pm so a full shift (7.50 hours) is 2pm-10pm. Im mostly a closing barista and a full time student that averages out to a 15 hour work week Friday-Sunday

Now for the rant, im really fed up, tired, burned out of closing. Tonight coverage was kind of bad, my SM texted me this morning telling me that the store will probably close early due to coverage and people calling out sick (this is fair). Im okay with that and ask to come in an hour or so early to make up for lost hours, my boss texts me later saying that the store will operate under normal hours which is also fine but I come in and it ends up with a two person close and the last person leaving at 8:30pm. Im so tired of just closing the store with just me and the shift, it ends up with me cleaning the store and the shift trying to count money and rushing to do it so they can help me out. I don’t think that for my store, a two person close is ever appropriate I understand that call outs happen but I feel like it would have made since to close earlier. At this point closing has felt really exhausting to me recently and I think I just need a break from closing all the time and just work more mid shifts.

How often does a two person close happen to y’all?

Thanks.

Unfortunately, I've done a fair share of two person closes and it straight up sucks. I've had to do almost all of my stores two person closes (we opened in June). Luckily we're going back to 7pm closes, so that should hopefully make them go away/be not as bad.

Is your store busy until you lock the doors? Usually we would close down and clean one bar and oven by the end of mid shift, 7pm at the latest if it was a super busy day. The mid team should empty and clean all of your coffee urns apart from the Pike obv so it would be the only one you have to worry about. Your pre closer should at least prep inclusions, frap roast, etc., clean bathrooms, trash and sweep lobby before they leave.

When I was shift and did closing shifts all my barista(s) had to do once we locked the doors was usually finish the last of the dishes and mop lobby.

I worked a busy college town drive thru location and would often get enough done that I could send my pre closer home early if they got their tasks done on time. And most of the time my barista would just be stuck waiting for me to finish counting.

yeah most nights it’s busy until we lock the doors, half of the time we don’t always have a pre closer.

i started pretty recently and for a while we always had three people closing and leaving together but apparently we weren’t actually allowed to have three ppl ? so now we have 2 ppl closing with someone leaving maybe around an hour or two before the store closes. i definitely miss closing with two other partners to help me especially since it’s so busy now with the holiday season.

when i’m pre close i’ll do as much as i can for either pastry or bar close before i leave and then i write a list of what’s left to do.

My old store in Hawaii I always had 3 person closes. I was a 3 year partner for that time. We were a fast paced DT store. I moved states and now work in Indiana where it’s always been a 2 person close at a fast paced DT store. For this time in Indiana I don’t understand how I can close with one other person while I have an order coming in, inventory count, department count, food pull, partner breaks, station break downs, floors, drains, customer support position all while I have 3 people with me until it hits 8 or 9pm. It’s holiday season now and nothing changed other than how many customers pile in the building and sit in the DT line.

From what I’ve seen, drive thru stores generally get 3 people to close and cafes usually get 2, but it also depends on how busy your store is leading up to close
