Helppp!! What do you date the sandwiches (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by rnaggie53
I’ve been at Starbucks for nearly 3 years & my sm just told me we date sandwiches for 3 days out🫢 I’ve been dating it for the very next day this whole time. I’m in shock. Help?! Did we used to date them different?

Update: thank you guys so much for the comments and input. I appreciate you guys taking time out of your day. To answer a question, yes, we do get the sandwiches delivered. I checked on the store resources, and we were still disagreeing on the dates. We ended up asking another manger who confirmed u date then for the following day. I have a new SM who is very understanding and receptive to feedback. I think she would appreciate that I corrected her but maybe that’s just me. Definitely don’t mean to step on her toes in any way.

Without over, complicating it, if the sandwiches or delivered to you, you date them for the following day. I was correct just confused and wanted reassurance<33 thank you guys.

Omg lol’d hard at this. Thank you friend.

Sandwiches are dated for two days from the date they’re pulled. Log into partner hub and find “how to date code fresh and frozen products - quick reference guide”
hatman_v4 56 points 7m ago
They're dated for 2 days.
jlansden 1 points 7m ago
When are you’re sandwiches pulled?
jlansden 1 points 7m ago
they *are* dated for two days! BUT most stores thaw overnight so when they are ready for opening, they will be good for today and tomorrow. TWO DAYS WILL HAVE PASSED ON THE THIRD OPENING - that’s why you date them for tomorrow (EOD should be assumed).
hatman_v4 0 points 7m ago
Ah we date them right after they're delivered. And we stock them at night. Our morning people don't do much and us closers basically have to do everything so all morning really needs to do is the pastry case and turn on the bars. (I've worked both open and close)

Edit: why am I being downvoted? This is how our SM had told us to handle the delivery. We put it all away at night and date all the pastries and sandwiches at close. My old store did it differently, sure, but every store is different and this is how our SM has done it for years and it works for us.
rnaggie53 [OP] -64 points 7m ago
Right so today & tomorrow. So I date them
For tomorrow
hatman_v4 65 points 7m ago
No they're dated 2 days from today. Aka tomorrow and the next day. If today is Sunday, you date them for Tuesday.
rnaggie53 [OP] 23 points 7m ago
Thank you
hatman_v4 7 points 7m ago
Yeah np! Hopefully that clears things up for your store lol
aspiringgrandpa 9 points 7m ago
damn. i’ve been told it was one day this whole time.
selkieflying 9 points 7m ago
If you are an opener dating sandwiches delivered overnight then YES it is dated for tomorrow
HAM1SH -7 points 7m ago
Two days from today is three days, today is day 1, day 2 tomorrow, day three the next day.
RyusuiJL 2 points 7m ago
It would be, if the sandwiches weren't frozen and didn't need 18 hours to thaw. You don't count the pull date as day one because of thaw time.
darby-61 20 points 7m ago
This comment makes me want to ask, what have you been dating whip cream?
jah_nuthin 8 points 7m ago
1 day, 24 hours, so today! Lmao
darby-61 5 points 7m ago
I thought this was a comment from OP and was terrified
selkieflying 1 points 7m ago
24 hours… so if made on Monday at 4 you date for Tuesday at 4.
[deleted] 1 points 7m ago

HAM1SH 1 points 7m ago
They would be dated at 24 hours, so if it's made on Monday morning it's tossed on Tuesday morning

But you're supposed to count the day you make it as day one, I currently work in a restaurant, and have always worked in food service

For example, if something is prepped on Monday morning and it's good for 2 days, its thrown out at end of day Tuesday. And if it's prepped Monday evening (after 5pm) then it's good until end of day Wednesday.
HAM1SH 6 points 7m ago
I'm not sure why this is getting downvoted, I've worked in food service my whole life and every restaurant or store I've worked in counts today as day one. So if something is pulled in the morning and it's good for 2 days, day 1 is today and day 2 is tomorrow, 2 days is 2 days

So, if something is good for 1 day and made at 6am on Tuesday its good until 6 am Wednesday

If it's good for 2 days then it's good for all of Tuesday and until end of day Wednesday

3 days all of Tuesday, and Wednesday, until end of day Thursday

When I worked at Starbucks sandwiches got three days starting on the day they are pulled, they were usually pulled in the evening so they were good for 2 days, pulled Tuesday evening, dated for Thursday.
darby-61 1 points 7m ago
You're completely correct but OP said in the comments that if something said 2 days and they pulled it on Monday it would get thrown out on Tuesday. Which was wrong that'd be 24 hours.
HAM1SH 1 points 7m ago
That would be 2 days, it would be thrown out Tuesday at end of day

Monday would be day one if it was made before 5pm, Tuesday would be day two, it would not be served on Wednesday so either thrown out end of day Tuesday or before opening on Wednesday

24 hours would be specified as a time period not by days, so if it's made at 2pm Monday it's thrown away at 2pm Tuesday, if it's made at close on Monday then it would be fine to just date it for Tuesday at close but if it's made in the morning on Monday and dated for close on Tuesday that's more than 24 hours and closer to two days
Enkeria92 2 points 7m ago
Think about it this way - it’s 2 days after they’ve thawed. 24 hour thaw period and then 2 days after that.

If you receive thawed sandwiches and are dating them first thing in the morning, you’re right that it should be for the next day. It’s two days from when the distribution people pull them, which for you is the day before. Making tomorrow the correct date.

If you pull them from the freezer, date them 2 days out. Easy.
rnaggie53 [OP] 7 points 7m ago
Thanks you I appreciate your input. This helps!!
selkieflying 2 points 7m ago
This is correct, OP
persona-2 21 points 7m ago
Frozen vs fresh is your issue here.

If I take frozen out of the freezer right now (11/27) I date then for 2 days thawed (11/29).

If I received them already thawed this morning (11/27) I date them for 2 days thawed (11/28).
Specialist_Salt_507 11 points 7m ago
If you receive them thawed then yes, you date them for 2 days/tomorrow. Today + tomorrow = 2 days
rnaggie53 [OP] 1 points 7m ago
Thank you<3
miniinovaa 10 points 7m ago
You got your answer but!!!! Egg bites are different
htmldun 8 points 7m ago
So the real answer definitely is if you’re getting them delivered prethawed then the morning you pull them out to date them you date them for the following day . If you are pulling them from the freezer to thaw the standard is 2 days + 18hr thaw time which is where the “three days” is coming from
Hazel_is_Trans 8 points 7m ago
I date 2 days out unless I don’t know when it’s pulled so I date 1 day out for that
b99__throwaway 6 points 7m ago
it is the next day if you’re a fresh store bc if it was 2 days out it would expire before open on the third day, so there’s no point. just put EOD for the next day as that will be 2 full days. you are correct, your manger is not
rnaggie53 [OP] 1 points 7m ago
Thank you. Yes this totally makes sense.
another-thrxwaway 5 points 7m ago
You date them 2 days from the day they’re pulled to thaw. Like another person has already said, if you pull them today, they’ll be dated for Tuesday. And for extra clarification if needed, this will mean they go bad at the very end of the day on Tuesday.
SlyCrane 4 points 7m ago
While I'll get flak for this - always obey your manager. Even though the official way says one thing or another, not only are you asking for a life of hell - but you are also disobeying the handbook and they will *certainly* use that against you.

You can be written up for insubordination. Worse, the rule is stated in a really broad sense so there is little to protect you from a writeup.

Remember this is a billion dollar corporation that does not, in actuality, care about you. If your situation is good, do not rock the boat, just get your job done and reap those benefits. It is not worth it to do it the "right" way, when it goes against what your manager wants.

P.s. I'll get a lot of replies here about calling that hotline - yeah it doesn't do anything, especially if your mgr is buddy buddy with the district mgr. Unless they do something outright illegal, the likelihood of it getting swept under the rug is high. And, to top it off, unless you are ready to go to court against starbucks, what are you going to do about actual retaliation?

Per the rules in the contract and employee handbook, it is incredibly easy to get rid of you. You cannot actually do the job perfectly, 100% of the time, or meet expectations (lookin' at you, drive thru times!). Especially when some of the requests are at odds with each other (great customer connections and fast drive thru times/in-store customers at pickup)
darby-61 7 points 7m ago
This is... A lot. Like I totally get where you're coming from if they said their sm had been super rude or angry. But it seemed like they were just asking about what the standard was. I know that if my stores sm was doing something like this not to standard and someone brought it up they'd thank them and adjust accordingly. Especially when it comes to dating food for quality control reasons. Just a weird thing to comment on a seemingly innocent post.
SlyCrane 2 points 7m ago
I had a nightmare manager, though maybe it is not the same everywhere.

She made at least 6 employees cry that I know of during my three months before I left - and I really, really wanted to be a barista.
darby-61 7 points 7m ago
I'm sorry that happened to you. Bad managers make the job awful. I just don't know if it's applicable here especially since they said they've been doing this for 3 years and didn't seem to indicate that their manager was mad at them or anything
SlyCrane 3 points 7m ago
Well gee now I feel like that infowars guy screaming conspiracy theories lol
jlansden 2 points 7m ago

Apparently this is too complicated for a lot to understand. 🫢
MrwaveMcgee 2 points 7m ago
Standard is two days
foomeitshitme 1 points 7m ago
Sammy’s are 66 hours but I just do EOD on day 3.

You date them for 3 days when you pull them because it takes 18 hours to thaw in the fridge.
HAM1SH 3 points 7m ago
I don't get why people are downvoting this, were they never taught how food service dates work?

2 days would be today (day 1) and tomorrow (day 2)

Thawing time should be counted in the days since they've been pulled from a freezer

It often takes 2 days to thaw chicken in the cooler at the restaurant I work at, it's good for 5 days, 2 days to thaw, 3 days once thawed. If it's pulled Monday its good until end of day Friday.
Jessi4394 2 points 7m ago
Yeah I don’t get it either. I work in a licensed store and they send us the shelf life of every item each season. It’s literally there in black and white straight from Starbucks corporate. 🤷🏼‍♀️
mylegalusername -1 points 7m ago
Thaw time counts as “pulled time” as per the “how to date dot” guidance found on the Partner Hub.
Jessi4394 3 points 7m ago
I don’t have access to the partner hub since I’m at a licensed store. I only have access to the shelf life packet we’re sent every season and I’m only repeating what’s stated in that. I’ll be sure to double check with our Starbucks DM next time she comes by though.
