Baristas not making drinks for family while using my partner discount???(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by JustMyOwnSpace
Edit: Hi guys! Please read this before reading the rest. I want to start off by saying I’ve been working here for two months and a barista told me I could do this, and I didn’t know any better. Thank you all for telling me that it is actually against the policy to do this; I didn’t know I could actually get in trouble for it, so from now and on I 100% will not continue with this (unless I use my own money to pay). I also know that I cannot use a till that someone else has signed into. Thank you guys for teaching me this! I avoided a lot of issues.
Hi everyone! I just want to start this off by saying that this has happened once before, so this is the second time it’s happening (different staff members)
This happened last night, and I clocked out right after I took my mom’s and sister’s orders (5 PM) It was not busy by any means. They used my partner discount, which made my name go on top of the order, but I did not add a “Don’t Make” onto any of their drinks. Because this happened before, I made sure to tell the barista on mobile/café bar to make those drinks even though they had my name on it, and they understood and said that they would make them.
We had to go someplace right after, so I thought that the drinks would be out pretty quickly due to the fact that it was empty. I go to sit with my mom and sister. About 20 minutes passed before I realized that something was just off, so I go back behind the bar and ask what’s going on. They said that the drinks said “Don’t Make” on them, which confused me because I didn’t do that? I printed out the receipt and showed it to them, and asked where they saw the “Don’t Make.” They said that I should just leave the receipt there and they would do it next. Another 20 minutes pass, and I go to the back and find that the barista had went to the back and my receipt was thrown out. I just made the drinks quickly and we left.
Is this normal?? Do I have to make the drinks anytime my family orders?? This is not a makeout beverage; they paid money for it and should be treated like any other customer. If I went into the store in my free time and used my discount, would they not make the drink as well??
It just really pissed me off because this happened before and I tried to make sure it wouldn’t happen again, but they just don’t seem to care.
Thoughts?? Is this normal??

No it’s not normal at all. I think they expect you to make your own drinks because they’d rather not do it. Could also be a mistake is someone was sliding in for them but they could’ve relayed the information.
JustMyOwnSpace [OP]23 points7m ago
Yeah I think they saw my name and got excited because they thought they didn’t have to make it. From now I’m gonna start asking them to use my Starbucks account and order drinks with the discount, because at least if they see the mobile with my name they’re gonna make it.
rnaggie530 points7m ago
Hey even if u use ur discount , change the name on the sticker. It will let you. It’ll make it easier for the baristas, they’ll think it’s just any other customer.
yvesagain41 points7m ago
Not normal. Sounds super passive aggressive. Maybe they were upset you were using your discount on family? I don't think we are supposed to do that technically. If they are rule sticklers that may be why.
Or, is it possible they didn't realize you had clocked out and thought you were just stepping out for a minute? Still kinda rude to not make it for you but maybe they thought you were coming back.
JustMyOwnSpace [OP]16 points7m ago
Yes I had just learned that it was against store policy (like two minutes ago). I didn’t know that, so maybe that’s why they didn’t want to do it. I’m sorry I didn’t know, I’ve only been working here for two months and a barista who has been working here for much longer than I have said I could put it in when my parents were at a Starbucks one time. I don’t think they were trying to be rude

So it’s not quite against policy. You can use your discount for however many drinks you want and give them to your family. The catch is you have to pay for them and technically you can’t be compensated back for them. If you put your numbers in and your mom used her card then that’s breaking policy.
JustMyOwnSpace [OP]9 points7m ago
Thank you for the clarification!

I also hate to be that person but it’s against policy for you to ring up your own family as well. You can use your partner discount on family beverages as long as you’re the one paying for the balance. Partner free beverages apply to partner only.
JustMyOwnSpace [OP]5 points7m ago
Thank you for this! One of my coworkers who has been working here longer than me told me I could do that on one of my first shifts, and I wasn’t corrected after. Now that I know, I don’t plan on doing it in the future and I don’t want to go against any policies.

Not to be a stickler, just something else to be careful about in the future - presumably, if you were able to enter and use your own numbers, it means that you're using a till that another partner was signed into. I know that can happen a lot, especially if it's busy and the people signed in at the front can't be grabbed to sign out, but others in your store may eventually get on to you about using others' tills as it's against policy and (like anything involving money) can quickly escalate to disciplinary action if something were to go wrong, like the count being radically off. It's a good idea to try to avoid using another person's till as much as you can, or at the least getting their permission to use it for markouts etc.

Yes. I haven’t been able to update the post but I do know about this now, as well as the fact that I cannot use my partner discount. One of the baristas had told me something different, and because I’ve been working here for two months I really didn’t know much else. Thank you for this thought, I appreciate it! Now, in the future, I won’t make this mistake again.

All good - we've all been there and this job is a lot of stuff thrown at you fast, sometimes with contradictory info!
tivcx10 points7m ago
What's the 'don't make' for anyway? Does that mean you'll make it yourself and not the baristas?
clouds18313 points7m ago
yes thats exactly what it means. if someone orders a water for example at the window, you enter in the water and tell the bar barista you need it asap and put dont make on it so its not made twice when the sticker actually prints. or if its a partner drink/food that was already made or if an order accidentally gets cancelled and needs to be re-rung in to have the customer pay for it so they don’t get double made.
tivcx2 points7m ago
Aah okay thank you! We don't have stickers at all and no drive thru either so it confused me.
JustMyOwnSpace [OP]6 points7m ago
At my store we have to mark out every drink we plan to make (one before shift, one during break, one after shift). The Don’t Make is just to let them know that it’s a drink we plan to make for ourselves during work, and it’s not for a customer who paid.
MysticsWonTheFinals14 points7m ago
Wait, you guys have a maximum number of drinks you can make per shift? I thought the benefit was any number of drinks?
silver_treestar14 points7m ago
You’re correct - not sure what’s going on with OPs store
JustMyOwnSpace [OP]2 points7m ago
Is this a store specific thing? I had read on a Partner Guide that we were only allowed to have that many drinks a day and one food item per day, and the Store Manager and my trainer said that as well.
tivcx3 points7m ago
Gotcha. Seems like they did that on purpose without asking you
AppointmentLatter3021 points7m ago
See my store had problem with someone stealing drinks and food that we can’t even make our own drinks anymore
Ok_Investigator43149 points7m ago
I just make the drinks myself bc I know it’s against policy lol
RosieHarlan7 points7m ago
Do other baristas use their partner discount on their families? Its actually against policy and maybe that’s why they aren’t making them
JustMyOwnSpace [OP]5 points7m ago
I’ve been working here for only two months, and the last time my family came here a barista (who had been working here for a year) saw that they were my family, asked me to come over, and put in my partner code for a discount. I didn’t know it was against policy in any way and nobody had told me that? I’m sorry if it is, and I won’t do that again.

The free drinks don’t count for family, but the discount is on everything you order, regardless of who it is for 👍🏻
clouds1831 points7m ago
if someone else is paying for it though its against policy to use the discount. you can use the discount for gifts to people but only if you pay for them and are not allowed reimbursement. its in the partner guide book.
kearadunne0 points7m ago
If you are present, you can use someone else’s money to pay for it. You still have to hand it over, but My mom would lend me her credit card to go and get coffee for her and her friends. How would starbucks be able to enforce this rule when situations like this exist. The partner has to be the one doing the transaction, but unless there is a revision to the contracts, they don’t have a system in place where partners are not allowed to order at a POS
lanastan4everlolz2 points7m ago
I’m sorry but I lowkey get annoyed if another barista tells us to make their drinks because we all usually make our own. I don’t know how your store is though but that’s mine and I know majority of people feel the same way. The only time we don’t is if the manager is there.
tevansalim1 points7m ago
depends how anal your shift is when u work but just make that shit right after u clock out and dip out
uwumoment1 points7m ago
if i still worked at starbucks (i quit) and i was you, i’d make the drinks myself. while i was there i had a strong belief that, not only did i make my own drinks better, but that it saved a lot of time and took a lot of stress off my coworkers back. bc usually when i left we were in the middle of a rush. ig now it’s considered against policy since they are more strict, but tbh i would have marked them out since i didn’t really give a shit. if you wanna keep working there, follow that policy and be more careful. they fire people very easily.
