Look up what’s going on with the new bill that was signed into law in CA, AB257. The law is supposed to increase food service workers’ minimum wage to $22/hr in California and is supposed to go into effect January 1st. That’s the hold up for the market rate increase. Starbucks signed a petition and financially backed something called the “Save Local Restaurants campaign” to have the law be held until it can be put to a vote that won’t be on a ballot until November 2024.
Edit to add:
Starbucks has not confirmed this internally to my knowledge, but considering they’re pushing to not have to increase CA partner’s pay by the same degree they increased most of the country’s pay when they brought up starting pay to $15/hr across the company, it’s probably safe to say this is why we haven’t heard anything. CA’s minimum wage is supposed to go up to $15.50 as it is, which is what CA partners were getting paid already in Orange County, $16.50 in LA. The increase that happened in September brought it up 3% to $15.96, which is not comparable at all to partners who went up from $10/hr in other states and doesn’t come near to being a living wage. Starbucks’ support for halting the bill is public information and can be easily found, but corporate still isn’t offering any transparency.
But hey, we have our own personal e-card service now to send green apron recognition cards 🤷♀️
