Fired for saying asshole (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Juli3anna
I got fired from the siren ….
I let my manager know about an incident that happened off the clock with this coworker who had a thing for me and how at that point it felt like harassment. This was two weeks prior to me getting fired and I came to him hoping he’d help as a manager, he obviously took the guys side and the guys gf who is a supervisor for our same store…. Later that week after the incident at the end of our closing shift he kept staring at me and I said “what?!… asshole” under my breath. He ended up telling my manager and when my manager asked me about it a few days later I didn’t question it because I was off the clock and he already knew about the harassment. Well he ended up firing me for it. I was in shock I have Been with the company for almost two years was 1 of 2 barista trainers there and was also in the middle of a promotion to becoming a supervisor. I gave everything to this company just to get treated like this. This is my advice to you guys to just go there and do your job and that’s it don’t let this company drain you when they’ll toss you out so easily in the end.

Erm this is a clear case of retaliation

When you're off the clock and not the one initiating conflict? Maybe try to contact your DM about the manager not listening to you about the harassment, and go to ethics and compliance

Please call ethics and compliance even if nothing can come from it, it’s gonna be on their record for the future. Sorry this happened to you.

Fight it!! I know it sounds easier to just put the whole thing in your rearview (tbh, it would be) but every time someone stands up for the little guy, we make a little progress even in this 'one step forward two steps back' culture. Every step counts. Escalate, escalate, escalate.

Yes yes yes very much this! I always encourage my coworkers to ALWAYS say something even if it’s small. Always stand up for yourself as well as the people you work with so we can create a non-toxic and safe environment and not dread going to work wondering if you are going to have an awful shift. I swear I’m sure my manager hates me at this point but I don’t care I will report and bring. Up every toxic ass crusty/coworker and continue to do so until they listen and make changes and listen to the people that work for them! Also so sorry this happened to you and sending nothing but love your way! But again yes please say something

As far as I’m aware, off-the-clock does not mean you can’t get fired. I would definitely try and fight it with E&C as this is a huge (hopefully no one sees this…) asshole manager but you should know what the rules entail exactly. If someone wants to chip in some actual specifics, please do!

Good luck!

I suppose I consider myself lucky I learned to, "act my wage" as a friend likes to say.

If you weren’t written up for it first then they can’t fire you immediately unless you do something illegal and/or dangerous…. Calling ANYONE an asshole is definitely not considered that. Verbal warning at the minimum, if you’re a repeat offender then a write up. If there’s no documentation of your behaviour through write ups then you have a case for sure.

I have never gotten written up before or even given verbal warning and the worst part was before I got fired I called him out on how a month prior we had another coworker come in off the clock and start cussing and he did absolutely nothing
No-Boat-1935 1 points 7m ago
Yeah I’d definitely call up the HR department and let em know the whole story. If you’ve never had disciplinary action taken against you they’ll see that on your record and the manager will be in for whirlwind of shit.
RosieHarlan 2 points 7m ago
I don’t think this is true. At one store I worked with someone cursed at the manager and they were fired the next day, and someone else called another partner a derogatory term and was also fired the next day. Most states are at will states and they can just fire you without a documented pattern of behavior.
No-Boat-1935 1 points 7m ago
Ahhh this might just be a Canadian thing then. Here there has to be documented evidence in order to have a “just cause” for firing someone. Same with due process, employees have the right to hear the allegations against them and respond to them before any disciplinary action can take place. Some employees don’t know they have these rights so they don’t end up doing anything about it.

Starbucks can and will fire you for whatever the fuck they want to make up. Ethics will resolve your case in an hour and have you discuss with DM. The DM who approved your SM to fire you. I was retaliated against as well but whoops I documented all that shit and suing. I’ve never been happier since leaving place should be called Shitbux. They break laws, regulations, policy, osha and it doesn’t matter 🤷🏻‍♀️
Cool_Yellow_2592 1 points 7m ago
Well it’s not just go and do your job. You definitely should have exhausted most if not ALL of your resources knowing you was there that long once the issue was not resolved once spoken on it. Come join me as a flight attendant 😏 I quit the siren because of the lack of help I needed. I’ve been happy since and never looked back
