cut hours even though ik this isn’t the worst of the worst (rant in the comments) (i.redd.it)

again ik this isn’t the worst of the worst but like srsly??? and i’m off the sunday before too. so i’m off for like 6 days straight. manager keeps hiring new people and accepting transfers too. i’m such a reliable partner, never called out, never late, always telling her yes whenever she needs me to pick up someone’s shift. shits just getting annoying. i’m working the minimum amount of hours for the next 3 weeks even though i have almost open availability.
pastabreadpasta 23 points 7m ago
It’s okay, your store is getting money for a holiday party! 🥳
OGbananaranium 92 points 7m ago
I’m in the same boat. My store is short on labor but we’re hiring a bunch of new people and I’ve communicated that I need at least 20-25 hours to even be able to pay bills. Happy holidays I guess
lat3spr1ng 37 points 7m ago
I sat down with my manager TWICE asking for at least 25 hours a week since I’ve been with my store for two years and have to pay bills, and nothing I said he actually listened to. 21 hours a week for like 4 weeks now. insane.
iiiimagery 16 points 7m ago
I would definitely look into transferring or picking up shifts at other stores
g_pvp_3 14 points 7m ago
DEADASSSS MY STORE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM 😫 someone tell my boss to stop hiring minors
nicolelynnejones 40 points 7m ago
I’ve never heard of another company that slashes hours during the holidays. Usually it’s the opposite
hantnah -28 points 7m ago
Starbucks historically gets less busy in December through the spring. The busiest time of year is PSL launch to Black Friday. Most stores numbers go down after thanksgiving

Electrical_Metal_106 4 points 7m ago
Even if this were the case (which, in my experience, it is not the case), then it should be on a store by store basis, not company wide. This happens at the end of every quarter when corporate wants to make their numbers look better. But it only drops morale, makes product standards go down and certainly makes the stores become filthy.
nicolelynnejones 2 points 7m ago
Our half hours during normal parts of the year are like 60-70, during the Holiday season they go well above 90-110. It’s like that at every location I’ve ever worked at, and every location my friends (both local and long distance) have worked. Saying the Christmas bevvies don’t bring in a TON of extra traffic is just not correct
hantnah 2 points 7m ago
I’m not saying that holiday drinks don’t bring in more sales than the rest of the year. All I’m saying is that the busiest time of year for most locations starts at PSL launch, increases until thanksgiving, and slowly declines into dead season in January/February.
hantnah 0 points 7m ago
I’m not saying the labor model is correct. I think it’s a trash labor model and sorely needs to be modernized. Every store I’ve ever worked for though, it is the case that the sales decline after thanksgiving - not a quick drop, its a slow decline. It is different for shopping center Starbucks because they’re usually just nuts and don’t have a normal morning peak.
crowhusband 20 points 7m ago
man im the other way way around, im trying to cut my hours down by like 10 right now :(

what is UP with this company and hours lmao
Horror_Disaster_2302 19 points 7m ago
went from 30 hours the last few weeks to 15 for that same week :( I have an open availability too!
darkwolf523 3 points 7m ago
Rip
CoffeeDisorder 17 points 7m ago
That’s the minimal hours you can have! I’d say that’s the worst of the worst
overturned23 15 points 7m ago
What’s your availability like?
Financial-Cry1103 [OP] 24 points 7m ago
weekdays 2-10 and then open availability on weekends
overturned23 32 points 7m ago
Then that’s awful hours for that availability. I’m sorry. I knew of baristas getting 1 shift back in March.
Financial-Cry1103 [OP] 11 points 7m ago
so frustrating omg😭
Few_Security_5206 12 points 7m ago
For a company who swears “they care about partners”, they really screwed all of us over during the hardest/usually most expensive time of the year. They really are just encouraging more unions to form…
theepi_pillodu 12 points 7m ago
As a customer, I have a question, why does Starbucks play with you like this for scheduling?

Is this for Starbucks to avoid fulltime benefits?
Due_War_6350 11 points 7m ago
part time and full time get the same benefits it’s just the company being cheap unfortunately and cutting down on labor costs
theepi_pillodu 6 points 7m ago
Makes sense, so instead of scheduling 2 people, they are just doing it per person. Okay.
mossygreentree13 9 points 7m ago
yes this is one of the reasons Starbucks cuts hours. You have to average 20 hours per week in order to qualify for benefits such as ASU, and health coverage. The way they keep you from that is either not scheduling you those hours if they know you are looking towards using those benefits OR just scheduling you constantly 20 hours then cutting you to 12 for a few weeks. Right now starbucks (like every few months) is saying that we don’t have any more labor to give out because they’re acting like they’re broke when they aren’t because they hate their employees and force them to have 150% availability(meaning you must be available 150% of the hours you WANT to work) and then only scheduling you the exact minimum that store managers are allowed (which is 12). Completely unfair. Starbucks sucks.
lewabwee 4 points 7m ago
It’s also because of call outs. A lot of baristas call out this time of year. They always schedule the bare minimum necessary to keep the store running so one call out can be a pretty big problem. Everyone wants more hours but doesn’t want to come in last minute so the shifts go uncovered. Store managers hire more people to make up for the call outs and people not wanting to come in. Everyone’s hours get cut to the minimum. A bunch of people quit. Cycle repeats.
Lcolecrochet 9 points 7m ago
The problem is cutting hours like this won’t resolve the call out problem. People are still going to call out and SSVs/SMs are till going to have to scramble to find coverage. Those getting their hours cut that actually want to work go pick up shifts at other stores making them unavailable to cover shifts at their home store. This only hurts people, not help.
lewabwee 4 points 7m ago
It gives them a bigger selection pool to call people in from. If you only have 2 people you can call you’re less likely to get a yes than if you have 5. In my experience very few baristas often pick up shifts at other stores, though it does happen. It definitely helps the managers in the short term to do this (right up until the people who need hours quit). They’re also pressured to do it because Starbucks doesn’t look very kindly upon shutting down the lobby or turning off mobiles if enough people call out.

None of this is really the store manager’s fault either. If they’re only allotted minimal labor hours to begin with then people calling out is going to hurt the store and tire out everyone who came in, leading to more call outs. It’s a vicious cycle.

But I have worked at stores where the store managers have tried not to hire more people to deal with call outs. It really didn’t work out. Bad idea.
mrcupcake18 7 points 7m ago
I don’t know why they feel the need to hire more people when you have enough. Like how about you just give your people hours? Jesus -__-
Lesbeanteacherlifts 6 points 7m ago
I went from 33 hrs a week down to 8, it’s so annoying, and I feel like it shouldn’t be allowed even though I know it is
Johannalee143 1 points 7m ago
Went from 25+ hrs and got scheduled 9 hrs for the week. Is that allowed?
absoluteemly 5 points 7m ago
I have almost fully open availability too, and I got scheduled 15 hours this week😭
arctic-lyra 3 points 7m ago
when i was a barista, i asked for 20 hours so i could get the asu benefit.

i got scheduled for less than 15 and my manager ignored me so hard. i didn’t get to start on time and it was a surprise that i qualified for the fall B semester.

i got a new sm though and then i applied to be a shift supervisor.
arctic-lyra 1 points 7m ago
as an ssv i work 25 because of school but before school i worked 38 per week. I guess it was also when we were busy but we’re generally a very busy store.

i usually ask to stay late if I’m scheduled for coverage if i have the time and i need more hours (as long as i don’t exceed 40). might as well give extra help and get paid enough to pay my bills.
certifiedsnax 3 points 7m ago
my schedules went from 27-29 hours to 20-24 and although it doesn’t sound like much those extra few hours make a huge difference in my paycheck i’m barely scraping by to pay rent rn
thefrenchtoastfiend 1 points 7m ago
I went from 30-40 hours a week to 20-25 😭 and my availability was entirely open and has just changed slightly because of it being colder outside (no buses that early)
pointetpointe 2 points 7m ago
Went from 25+ hours to week to 15-17 tops. SM is hiring like crazy yet we only had 5 baristas during peak TODAY. I close most of the time, and it’s rare if we have 3 baristas along with the SSV. Most of the time we’re down a barista. When we had our store meeting recently, some of the closing staff explained this just for the SM to say we’re not understaffed and that he closed recently and it was a good close. Apparently, we aren’t sequencing our drinks which is why our closes aren’t good. 🙃
Persnickety-sass1015 2 points 7m ago
Same here. I work harder than most, stay late, pick up shifts even on my day off and went from 40 hours to 30 hours and were short 7 partners! Like WTF???? I’m seriously frustrated.
turkeyandhamber 2 points 7m ago
i barely get 15 a week. my mom is paying half my bills at this point and i’m not mentally well enough to get another job
jjd_yo 2 points 7m ago
Meanwhile I can’t get mine down from the high thirties as a <1 year barista. My availability might be getting changed soon 🫣
cherrythot 3 points 7m ago
Mine are in the high 30s too and I love it bc money but I also feel like I’m ✨dying✨
Steampunkboy171 1 points 7m ago
I have open availability and was hired with it stating full time. I barely get 20 hours. And now it's gone down to 9.25. Screw this company.
Ang736382638273 1 points 7m ago
Yes I went from 30 to 17 hours and only morning shifts 😭 I’m a college student who stays up late ain’t no way I’m going in at 5am
MisogenesUSA 1 points 7m ago
Go job hunting. Either they’ll give you more hours or you’ll have a new job.
trouble-in-space 1 points 7m ago
Glad I’m not the only one this has been happening to. I usually work five, sometimes four, days a week, but I’m only scheduled for three days this week and next. I was asked if I could come in yesterday and I did, so that makes it four, but it feels weird having three days off in a row. I find it weird that my hours are getting cut even though we have staffing issues and a few people have quit and one was fired in the past couple months, which includes a couple very new people who just stopped showing up. I heard that they tend to do this quite a bit during the holidays, but I’m not too sure why to be honest.
Financial_Hand3685 1 points 7m ago
Same. I work 7.5 hours next week and 9.5 hours the next week. Good thing we can file for unemployment for anything under 20 hours a week.
rubyboobydooo 1 points 7m ago
yuppp my hours have been cut recently too! glad i’m not the only one
mossygreentree13 1 points 7m ago
lmao im of my 7th out of NINE days in a row off. Getting 12 hours this week lolz
Senseitay_ 1 points 7m ago
In the same boat 🙃 my manager is constantly saying we need to save on labor even tho we’re busier then ever, yet continues to hire new partners while cutting the hours of reliable employees and ssvs. Yet she’s lining up to ask for a raise for herself…
Forward-University30 1 points 7m ago
I get 1 three hour shift per week 💀
thefrenchtoastfiend 1 points 7m ago
everyone at my store has gotten hours cut and is scheduled for 4.75 hour shifts apart from supervisors (but even they have cut hours)
Creative-Clothes-520 1 points 7m ago
I’m working 38 hrs a week they can’t give me more or they would if you need more you should switch stores someone out there will value you
cherryyrat 1 points 7m ago
i hv cut hrs too 🙁 ive been getting 11 hrs a week for the past 2 weeks and the next few schedules and my manager just hired ANOTHER person. every one else is getting 15+ but im the only minor at my store so MY hrs get slashed. so frustrating 😞
eri-kin 1 points 7m ago
My manager only scheduled me 12 hours this week and next week, and only 4 for the new schedule. :// It's fucking ridiculous.
g_pvp_3 1 points 7m ago
sooo funny because my boss scheduled me 4 hours the next two weeks. he didn’t schedule me for sunday in 2 weeks and i’ve been working every sunday for a year since i been here. i’m a part time student + minor so i can’t work more than 20 hours a week anyway, but still. I was working 16-20 hours every week during october and first half of this month. i’m mad because i’m available everyday but friday n saturday and someone just quit too…
thechamelioncircuit 1 points 7m ago
Damn how late are you guys open 🫡
cobraastarship 1 points 7m ago
i also only have like 12 hours this week and when i picked up a shift in the app it was unassigned to me. kinda sucks to happen right before christmas :/
