Do managers have to say they approved/denied time off requests? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by long-pit
Hey guys. I told my store manager that I needed late December to early January off (not specifying for fear of retaliation) because I'm visiting family out of state. She has not given me confirmation either way for this.

If I'm scheduled any time within those weeks, I can't come in. I would prefer to hand in my two weeks versus getting fired because it would look better on future job applications. Is she allowed to do this? Any advice would be MUCH appreciated.

Did you request off officially online? Verbally doesn’t really mean much.

How do I do that? My manager said the only way to request time off is to talk to her or write a note.

This is for US stores, idk about UK, but My Partner Hours on the back of house desktop or downloading the Starbucks partner hours app. Instructions in my partner hub.

Thank you.

Yeah that sounds like she’s trying to get around the system. Definitely do it in the app/online so you can defend yourself

They’re not required to tell you whether they approved or denied. More often than not, they won’t inform you.

Make sure you go into partner hours and request the time off. It might be too late, because managers are going to start working on the late December schedule pretty soon.

you need to put in a time off request through partner hours, either on the BOH computer or the app on your phone. it will then be approved or denied. if you were vague, it sounds like your manager might schedule you when you wanted time off because you didn’t give exact dates. if that happens that would be your fault, because they can’t work around dates if they don’t have any. be up front and direct and tell them what days you need off and then you’ll have an answer. either you get the days off or you have enough time to put in a 2 weeks, get a new job, and still go on vacation

I told her the dates I needed off. I'm being vague here because I don't want to be retaliated against.

You’ll lose your job eventually either way at Starbucks. You’ll always be retaliated against. That’s why so many locations are unionizing.

Go anyway… I did. While I got a write up it was worth it to me.
