Being Asked To Be ASM (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Longjumping_Future63
Yeah... the title.... My SM keeps bugging me and begging me to be their ASM ever since the previous one quit. I know it would be hell and my SM's antics is what ultimately drove the old one to quit. They were basically using the old ASM like their personal assistant/slave. Mentally not the best move for me, but financially I really could use it and obviously the other benefits + climbing into a role like this looks really good on paper.... Just not sure if I can stomach it.... Any advice? Should I just suck it up and take it for what it brings me or stay an SSV and keep riding the easy life.

I would think long and hard about that. I’m currently finishing out a degree within organizational leadership and have looked at the track for ASM-SM. You’re paid from 42-54k a year (I believe that was the “old” salary, not sure if they updated when everyone was increased). It worked out to ~20.96/hr when I was doing calculations. Now I’m paid 19.05/hr as a shift, that’s not a huge difference. Additionally, ASMs do not get tips. So my tip rate at my cafe is ~1.5/hr (cash). When you add in the credit card tips…we’ll see how much more we’ll get (but off of last week’s WTD numbers ~1200, divided by 300 labor hours, that’s an extra $4 hourly, which brings me up to….24.55/hr….well above what an ASM clears at their 20.96/hr.
This is one of the main factors holding me into an SSV spot, sadly. especially as you consider that SSV have far less duties than an ASM/SM.

I was told they didn’t increase the sm/asm salary when they increased everyone else. my asm at the time told me they made about a dollar more than my ssv’s so yeah this checks out.

So salary transparency was provided in my region, they’re saying that my “area” makes around 47-64 as an ASM…but I don’t think that’s worth it considering the location they have the ASM spot is an hour away with beltway traffic! I’ll gladly take a dollar an hour less for a ten minute commute AND opener hours!

The more I hear the worse it gets lol, I think I'm with you on that sentiment

Yeah, plus I don’t have to deal with scheduling snafus when people call out. I go to work, do my job and go home.
Like it’s super sad that SSV is about as good as it gets with sbux. (Unless you consider DM, but you’re probably working 60-80 hours a week…)

Wow, that's actually really helpful thank you! I guess I just assumed it was more. I'll probably ask what my salary would be and do calculations for that, bc half the reason I'd even considered taking the offer is the money 🥴
Affectionate_Fart 2 points 7m ago
Yeah. It’s ridiculous. Now you have to wage that with the fact that an SM gets 60-80k yearly. (Oh also look at salary transparency on job postings—-you can see what sm/ASM make) and if you’ll take a “slightly pay decrease” to be making SM money after a year. Because ASM is a temp role which “shouldn’t” be extended past a year.

It would be unlikely you’d be an ASM at your current store. You can only apply for the position if it’s been posted by your district manager, and you can only be trained at a store where the manager is an ASM trainer. I believe you can’t train at your home store- it may be possible you get moved back after your 6 weeks training, but also unlikely. Depending on your state will determine your salary. Currently as an ASM in training, im making an avg of 23/hr until I’m full salary- where the shift rate is 19 here. Given the roll out of digital tips, stores in my district are making an extra $3-4/hr, some ssv’s are potentially are making more than me now with digital tips/cash tips!
I love the ASM/sm role and enjoy being able to lead others and be apart of the business aspect- so it’s really about what your career goals are w the siren :)

Thank you!! This is very helpful!

I was told you can’t promote to asm at the store you’re currently at, like you have to transfer to promote.
Longjumping_Future63 [OP] 1 points 7m ago
That's weird I've never heard that. Another store in the district recently promoted someone internally to their asm too.

I say go for it! The experience of being an ASM will be great for your resume in the future as once you get to this level these skills can be transferred to any company.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too and obviously I cant stay at starbucks my whole life but I do currently like where I am and I use all my benefits so I dont want to like, jump the gun then get burned out and hate my life ig.
