conflict of interest?? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by origin-earth
Hi so I just got hired at starbucks yesterday! I’m excited. But i’m also currently working at a locally owned coffee shop one day a week and the SM informed me that this would be a conflict of interest:’( id love to stay working there especially as it’s just one day a week, would this be an issue? how would anyone actually know Lol!? Obviously I will leave if I have to but just thought i’d see if it’s more serious than it seems

Your SM is correct, Starbucks won’t employ you if you’re also working for a competitor, even if you only work there one day a week. (This is in the partner guide, which you should get during onboarding.) I mean, if they don’t know, then they don’t know. But if they find out, they can fire you.

That’s WILD bc mine hired me KNOWING I work as a barista at a seasonal coffee shop in Skagway, Alaska 3 months a year… I am a former partner though but hadn’t worked as a S’bux barista in 12yrs and had been doing the small scale seasonal job after.

it really depends on the sm because i had a job at a small coffee shop when i was at starbucks and she was happy for me, now ofc i left both of those places and found an even better small coffee shop

She is correct it is a conflict of intrest

I worked at a local shop while working at sbux, we talked it over with the DM and he said if it’s a small shop then it would be okay since it’s not a huge company competitor.
Ordinary-Theory-8289 39 points 7m ago
I mean my DM says that Dunkin’ Donuts isn’t a competitor, because we don’t sell coffee. We sell an 💫 experience 💫 so I guess I’m good to get a second job at Dunkin lol
baristaaf1211 12 points 7m ago
I worked at Dunkin as my first job lmaoooo it was HORRID I was getting paid $9 AS A SHIFT
jazzysoranio 1 points 7m ago
Omg that’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all day 😅
CriticalSheep 33 points 7m ago
It is a conflict of interest but I cannot emphasize this enough: ask for more hours at the local coffee shop and leave Starbucks.
idkcassie 31 points 7m ago
while a local coffee shop would likely have a better environment, some people are at starbucks for the benefits that locally owned places just can’t compete with.
Ajskdjurj 12 points 7m ago
Yea people shit on Starbucks but I stay for the insurance. They literally covered so much for my daughter with her medical issues since she was a baby.
uwumoment 1 points 7m ago
starbucks doesn’t guarantee the hours necessary to enroll in these benefits. i had 20-30 hours availability and they’ve been cutting hours, i was scheduled for one day out of the week for a month or so. it’s like they have a maximum number of ppl from each store that they can give benefits to and they just cut everyone else’s hours
jazzysoranio 1 points 7m ago
I hate it, but I have to agree with that. You get way more free stuff and benefits from Starbucks. It’s just a matter of perspective. If you want to work in a real coffee shop you need to find an actual coffee shop. If you’re just looking for a job with benefits and reasonable pay, that’s Starbucks. Starbucks is about 25% coffee shop and 75% fast food.

Trust me the grass is definitely not always greener. My old local shop only paid us $8 an hour and had horrible tips and no insurance. Plus the owner was hot headed and fired people on the spot just for looking at her wrong. Starbucks has its issues but so does everywhere else 🤷‍♀️

The thing about locally owned businesses is the environment can be 100x better than corporate or a 100x worse. People always talk about how great they are but the majority of the worst stories I’ve heard about people working for terrible management were local businesses. There’s just no one above the owner to keep the owner in line.
uwumoment 1 points 7m ago
i had such a bad experience with a small coffee shop so it’s hard to trust the one i’m at now, they pay 15 base, plus tips. we use coffee that’s locally roasted, milk that’s locally sourced, compostable coffee cups… you name it. there’s really a spectrum of how good and evil some of these business owners are.

I don’t have awards to give atm but goddamn it this comment deserves it.

It is ok as long as you’ve disclosed that information. You can call partner contact center for clarification. We currently have a partner at my store who works at a local coffee shop. If you just got hired you should’ve received a partner handbook. If not, ask for one. It has the number to contact pcc and there is a section in there that specifically addresses this issue. I recently read about it in there.

actually i’m pretty sure local shops are fine. Small business and such. If you were employed by Dunkin’ donuts, Tim Hortons, or another corporate style coffee chain im pretty sure that THATS where the conflict comes from. I’d bring this up to your SM!
lewabwee 1 points 7m ago
I was allowed to work at Dunkin for a little while. It’s really just up to the sm and dm because, as far as I can tell, it’s not super clearly defined.
Ok-Mix-5129 5 points 7m ago
You aren’t supposed to work at any other coffee shop technically
photo_rain 3 points 7m ago
I was told when I was hired it was only considered a conflict of interest if I was salary at Starbucks ….
kearadunne 3 points 7m ago
They’re a local coffee shop, it doesn’t really count as a competitor. They are two entirely different types of companies, but selling the same product isn’t the only way to justify this. Dunkin donuts, panera, au bon pain, and tim hortons are the type of competition that starbucks is actually talking about.

You still have to follow the confidentiality agreements, but a company with 25 employees compared to a company with at least 350,000 employees. 1 local store vs aprox. 15,000 🤦🏻‍♀️
kearadunne 3 points 7m ago
🙌🏻 if you are a supervisor and up, it would be a conflict of interest to work at any coffee shop. I quickly went from supervising at sbux to managing a restaurant, kitchen, and bar 🤷🏻‍♀️ I wouldn’t promote someone from shift lead/supervisor to department supervisor/ department manager if they were working at a company that was very similar 🤦🏻‍♀️ i wanted to give a helpful answer, and i think this rounds it out.

Baristas can because the majority of the information they have is recipes that are available to the public.
Supervisors and up cannot because they regularly handle sensitive information.
Dunkin and panera are always conflicts of interest. Local coffee shops are not.

Tell them you quit the one day at the other job and keep working.
persona-2 1 points 7m ago
Are you hired as a barista or as a SSV? For a barista it’s fine. For a SSV it’s not.
