According to Starbucks we’re supposed to inform customers that we only allow service animals inside. And if they tell us it’s a service animal (even though it’s clearly not) we’re just supposed to believe them and let it happen.
Asking for any kind of ID or paperwork, can get you terminated and possibly a lawsuit.

if the dog is misbehaving, it no longer has public access, regardless of service animal or not, service animal handlers know this and would not put up a fight if asked to leave. but fake sd handlers would because they don’t know the ada law.
Callesandra17 points7m ago
You are allowed to ask if the dog is required for a disability and what work or tasks the dog is trained to perform. You can not ask what the disability is but if they can't or won't answer these two questions you can ask them to leave. Service dogs are not required to be registered so if the customer claims they are a "registered support animal" that is not protected under ADA. While dogs that are trained for PTSD alerts and support are protected, Emotional support animals are not. https://www.ada.gov/resources/service-animals-2010-requirements/

you’re breaking health code 🥴
Electrical_Metal_106-8 points7m ago
What is the health code you are referring to? The animals are in the customer area.
Thank you. I was obviously ignorant to the actual policy. I thought they were ok as long as they stayed away from where the food was being produced. Where I live, people bring their dogs with them everywhere so it seems so normal to see dogs indoors.
No-Boat-1935-1 points7m ago
Does it make that big of a difference if we already have actual service animals coming in every day
clouds18331 points7m ago
yes and you’re putting actual service dogs in danger because if they are reactive dogs then they can distract service dogs and cause them to miss an alert from their handler. or worse the pet attacks the service dog or a human.
Ok_Visit_19687 points7m ago
Service dogs are trained not to be reactive . The problem comes with untrained emotional support animals. A seeing eye dog is $11,000 . they are not the same.

you’ve either misread my comment or you’re replying to the wrong person.
fruit_enjoyer1 points7m ago
What do you mean about the health code part? Are service dogs cleaner/less likely to carry diseases?
clouds1831 points7m ago
no, they are only allowed because if they were not then you’d be discriminating against a disabled person. it’s the ada law that allows service dogs in places pets would otherwise not be allowed.
edit to add: I posted a link that explains the health code from the fda below on another thread if you’re curious.
Ordinary-Theory-8289-19 points7m ago
You’re not even supposed to ask if it’s a service dog lol
Hot-Independence867013 points7m ago
yes you can, you just cant ask for proof or what the service is for. like you can’t follow it up with asking if it’s just an emotional support dog or if it’s for a medical condition

Service dogs are suppose to be helping that person if they’re distress, trained dogs are trained dogs that don’t misbehave.

And this is why our customers get pissy when we tell them we can’t have dogs inside. “The other Starbucks…”
I had a lady get so mad she got flustered and was shaking and was unkind throughout the interaction. Stop doing this stuff, when one store breaks rules it makes the rest of our lives more difficult and we don’t get paid enough to be treated like this!
No-Boat-19350 points7m ago
Good point, I would be annoyed at this too

Same. I live in the desert so it’s actually illegal to leave a dog in the car for any amount of time (and can be lethal in less than 5 minutes in the summer). I don’t really care if they come and go as long as they don’t sit inside.
ElevatorsAreScary1 points7m ago
How about you don’t bring your dog if you’re planning to go inside a store?
fruit_enjoyer0 points7m ago
A lot of people get starbucks on a whim, i believe
ElevatorsAreScary1 points7m ago
When you have a pet you’re responsible for it. You can’t jeopardize their welfare on a “whim”. I would never do that to my kitten. Be responsible with your animals idk
fruit_enjoyer0 points7m ago
Wait like, “jeopardize their welfare” referring to leaving them in a hot car? Of course im not advocating for leaving pets in a hot car you sociopath. I’m saying lots of customers get starbucks on a whim, and happen to have their pets on them, so they have no choice but to bring in their dog when they pop in and grab their mobile order (because not bringing their dog would mean leaving it in a hot car). Yeah you could say, “dont get starbucks when you have a dog!” But that’s unrealistic. Because unfortunately people don’t usually plan ahead that far.
