Venting about my SM complaining about ppl (me) calling in sick- (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by tivcx
I let my SM know immediately when I woke up, which was at 9 am (my shift was at 2 pm the same day). I couldn't open my eyes because of my headache and I had a fever. I told him I'll be going to the doctor and he just said "get well soon (name)". Well I guess he was real mad about that bc he posted a whole paragraph on our group chat (yeah we have one of those) about "people" calling in sick LAST MINUTE. Uhm?? He also mentioned a partner getting in a motorcycle crash and still coming to work. That was his example. Oh and "Think about the partners you're leaving behind and don't call in sick for the smallest of things". Might as well just fucking tag me damn. I called in sick only 2 times in 6 months. Give me a fcking break🙄

It is still crazy to me that people like this truly exist like my god it just amazes me that people actually think like this and have no empathy.

i’ve felt this on another level

i have a skin condition that literally makes me immobile and i have to call out a lot (ethics and compliance won’t report or help me out).

one of my shifts always reacts negatively or has something passive aggressive to say when i call out or have to go home.

at this point it makes me uncomfortable to even be on the floor and i’ve completely lost respect for them knowing they are reacting this way because they care more about this billion dollar company then the folk they need to run it.

ILL NEVER UNDERSTANDS SSVs AND UP GO OUT THEIR WAY TO MAKE BARISTAS FEEL SO LITTLE ESPECIALLY WHEN WERE THE ONES RUNNING IT AND

WEEEEE ALSO DID NOT SIGN EVERY MINUTE OF OUR LIVES TO THE SIREN, i’m so tired of this company lol

I thought it was just my SM… i got written up and coached about calling off when I had the flu. I came to work with a fever and they still told me to work and I ended up passing out and when I came to my SM was like if you’re sick you need to make sure you find coverage because we’re losing a partner on the floor if you have to stay home or if we have to send you home. And what killed me was they never mentioned not working sick bc I won’t get better, I might get my partners sick, it’s a food safety violation, just ‘we’re losing a partner’ Like I just hit my head on the DT counter mamas, the room is still spinning idek what you’re saying rn.

Dude, that’s worth reporting. The fact that you passed out and hit your head because you were asked to work sick. It’s a liability for the company, so they will be motivated to act on it.

First of all that's absolutely an incident that needs reporting, but second, you're not required to find coverage for calling out sick. You also can't be written up for it if you're using your sick hours. If your SM isn't respecting those rules you should be reporting them to partner resources and refuse to sign the writeup. If its a consistent pattern of behavior I'd also talk to your DM about it.

I dont understand. Somebody like that should not be in a position of authority or power. They were so worried about "being down a partner on the floor" rather than worrying about food safety laws/violations when someone works sick or worrying about other people getting what u have. They're not being proactive and letting a sick partner stay home and recover because in the long run that would mean less Partners calling off because they caught whatever you have. Sorry you went through that after passing out. Managers should have empathy but some lack that and its extremely unfortunate to the employees under them.

Its insane that there are a ton of managers out there that cause their employees to be scared to call out when they are SICK and CONTAGIOUS.

I rarely call out but i did recently and I think I had a shift for 6:00 a.m. or 7:00 a.m. but I ended up telling my manager around 4:30 in the morning that I was in the bathroom with diarrhea. She showed empathy and she showed care and told me that she hopes I feel better soon and the only thing that she did was ask if I was feeling up to coming in and working like 2 to 3 hours and I told her I couldn't and she was completely understandable and told me that she hopes that I feel better and that was it. No hounding me or making me feel bad about finding coverage. She takes care of that because that's what managers should do instead of making the employees that they are in charge of scared to call out and forcing them to pretty much come in and contaminate everything and everybody

Don’t worry about it. He sounds like a clown.

I hate when when managers try to compare peoples situations to others. When I got my first does of the covid vaccine it put me out for a week. I’m immunocompromised in addition to other health issues and it affected me a lot harder than anyone else in the store. My SM looked in the face watching me struggle to catch my breath and went “I don’t understand what your problem is. I got the vaccine and was just fine. Everyone else was fine.”

When I was at tarbucks we had to close early due to multiple call outs and me being injured. Like people who handle food being sick got the HR rep so mad she was ranting about “call out season”… girl read the room

Some SM’s have little to no compassion. It’s like they forgot what it’s like to work hourly instead of salary. It must be convenient for him to not need to find coverage if he’s sick… I was sick with pneumonia and tried to contact our interim SM and all she said was “is this going to take all day?” Like girl, they aren’t clearing me to come back to work. So yes.”
