How to know if I'm so bad at my job that I should find another one? (Venti/trenta post) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by PaleontologistLoud37
So I've been working at Starbucks for a little over a year now. A few months ago, I transferred to a new store when I moved away for college, and it's made me realize some stuff about my old store. Mainly that my training was VERY subpar and that I missed out on a lot, especially on CS and bar, so at my new store I'm having to play catch-up. My SSVs are all awesome and chill, but I can't help myself from feeling shitty because I feel like the "weak link" so to speak.

I mostly end up camped out on drive every shift, usually for the majority/entirety, and I worry it's because I suck at everything else and the SSV doesn't trust me to not screw things up.

I tried to give myself a grace period since my new store is so drastically different from my old, but I still keep screwing things up. For example, apparently during the week I was home for Thanksgiving, they changed a lot of the procedures including how pumps are washed, mainly that they're supposed to be reassembled after washing (they previously were put away disassembled and put together when needed). My first shift back, I did the dishes and put them away the old way, and the next day one of the SSVs sent a reminder to the store chat about it, and how they had to take the time to put them all back together during peak. I didn't know it had changed but I still feel awful knowing that it was my fault.

All this in mind, I've started doubting if I should still work at Starbucks or if I should look for another job. I like working here a lot, but I'm afraid I'm dragging my coworkers and the store down. I've worked here for a year but there's so much I feel like I don't know, and I feel so dumb.

I guess what I'm asking is how do you know when to cut your losses and admit you're so bad at your job you should quit? Is it even possible to rebound and improve? Is this something anyone else has experienced or am I just too stupid to work at Starbucks?

That’s more of a communication aspect. I’d honestly reach out to SSV/SM and ask about how you could “do better” or “learn more”. It’s okay to fluster at times, lord knows I do! Just take a breath

Also, I would recommend advocating for yourself to get more bar time if that is something you found you need to catch up on, you can't get better at bar unless you are actually put on bar to practice. Also, feel free to ask questions about recipes and stuff until you've got them down.

If the job is stressing you out, feel no shame in putting your two weeks. But honestly, if I were a manager, I'd much rather have an employee who cares enough to even consider everything you wrote out, than someone who knows things, but just doesnt even try. I'd personally ask if I could have a meeting with your SM or maybe a shift you trust, and just let them know how you are feeling and ask for some coaching or areas of improvement. I think they would appreciate you reaching out. Just my thoughts, as it does sound like the people at your store are kind/reasonable.

Up to you but telling your SM and ssvs that you feel unconfident about your initial training and you feel like you're screwing up, I vet they would be happy to coach or low key retrain you.

Tbh I say quit this job isn’t worth the stress if you can apply for pharmacy technician license you can get same benefits Same pay (little more sometimes based pay in Texas is 15.00 hr but can go up to 20.00 hr or 40k a year) same hours too and they are unionized.. I can see a sinking ship Starbucks workers morale is incredibly low and customers are feeling the impact. You can also be a bartender and or Walmart or Costco they pay more and have same benefits I’m planning on quitting after holiday season so I do recommend that you quit as well their is so much more better jobs that’s not the high stress high productivity and very fast paste environment that is Starbucks

if you’re not getting it by now, you should quit
