Any advice for a new SSV? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by roxnickd96
Starting as an SSV on the 19th and haven’t worked at a Sbux in a few years. What are some of the best tips you guys could give to a new shift whether from another shift’s perspective or even from a barista’s perspective? What makes you like/not like your SSV’s?

Learn from the people around you and keep an open mind. Get to know your barista’s strengths and areas for growth. Rotate people around during the shift, a lot of people feel like it makes the time go by faster and keeps them from feeling so exhausted. Be clear with directions, and compassionate with coaching. Ask for help when you need it, and begin to explore your boundaries. Also the store resources app can be a life saver for everyday standards and things.

everything they said, plus regularly asking for feedback, from baristas, other shifts, and your sm. be specific too, like “how did you feel about my deployment today? how was my communication to the floor today?” stuff like that. also, remember to keep your composure, and try to be as present as possible. i find often that baristas feed off the energy of whoever is leading the shift, and if you’re stressed, they’ll be stressed. also, always take your breaks. even if it seems like there isn’t enough time for your last 10, and you have too much to do, you deserve that time
