I think my managers trying to pull a fast one on me, what do you guys think? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Hardandspikey
Two days ago my shifts that I already worked got changed from coverage to non coverage on one shift, and to training for another shift out of nowhere. I texted her about it today asking if it would affect my pay and tips. From what I've been told, non coverage and training do NOT count towards hours you've made on tips. This would be terrible considering how well tips have been during the holiday season, and I'd be losing around 6 hours of coverage time.

She said that she changed it from coverage to non coverage one day because I helped put away a truck for 30 minutes, and accidentally changed it to the whole shift. And changed it to training on Friday because a lot of people were and she thought she had me do it too, which never happened. And after clarifying all of this she said that she can't change it back since payrolls been approved, but says it won't affect my pay in any way.

Get this though, about a week ago though I overheard her talking to a shift saying that our district manager needed her to schedule more non coverage and training hours. I didn't catch the full conversation but it makes me think that she's trying to pull a fast one to meet demands. What do you guys think? Am I just being paranoid? What do I do from here? I really need advice.

EDIT: Thank you for the advice everyone! I was under the impression you didn't get tips from non coverage/training shifts. An old coworker told me you didn't but I guess they were mistaken. I feel a lot better and thank you for the info!

The hours still count towards tips.

Okay cool, does it affect anything then? Sick time, etc? I just don't understand why she'd of changed it if it doesn't matter. I really appreciate the answer that makes me feel a lot better.

Your manager only gets so many labor hours that they're allowed to schedule, but a lot of times it's not enough to meet actual demand. The DM was probably on her about going over on labor, so she changed some of the hours to non-coverage/training to make things look better on her end. It shouldn't matter for you.

The store has a "budget" for how many coverage hours it can use based on sales. Your manager gets yelled at if they don't stay within 1% of that number each week. Non-coverage and Training have separate, static budgets.

Nothing to be paranoid about, just manipulating the budget to give you guys more labor. Still get tips all the same.

it’s a way to get around the crazy restrictions on labor allowances right now. when cuts were super bad earlier this year, i had like 3 months of training shifts without a single trainee. just helps them staff the floor appropriately without getting reprimanded by higher ups. won’t affect your tips/pay at all.

Hours worked are hours paid. Doesn’t matter if you’re training, non coverage or whatever, if you’re an hourly partner then you get tips for whatever is paid. When the partner divides up the tips for the week and prints the report, the report is everyone’s full hours that they worked.

yes. the only things that don’t count towards tips are sick time/vacation time & cat pay so as long as you are being paid for time in the store it should count towards your tips

This is not true. You still get tips. It’s just the shift code. Like others have said, she probably went over on labor and getting chewed a new one from the DM so she changed the job but she can’t straight out tell you that’s the reason so she told you those reasons.

Your manager is trying to make it look like they used less labor hours. In my almost 10 years with the company I’ve known 3 managers on my district to get fired for this.
