So I recently got talked to and told that AS SOON as my break ends I have to be on the floor and ready. But I time myself exactly 10 mins. And come back as soon as my break but I guess that’s not right? Also I always wondered when exactly my 10 starts. I was told it’s starts when I get off the floor, but I also got told it starts when I take off my apron. Which is right ?
Glizzysforrizzy90 points7m ago
Depends on the shift I personally wait until the barista is in the back room /sitting to start the count down . Personally an extra min or two doesn’t bother me but if it’s an excessive amount it’s an issue.
1PinkPanda [OP]31 points7m ago
Ya usually the extra minutes are cause I’m putting on my apron. And my stuff away. But besides that I never go very excessive.
Greedy_Visual671021 points7m ago
Y’all Time them?😅 that’s crazy
Have_Donut2 points7m ago
Got to with some people unfortunately. Some people won’t set a timer and get lost on their phone
Ordinary-Theory-828954 points7m ago
Putting your apron on and getting into position is a work related task. I refuse to put my apron on before clocking in, and I’m not asking where I’m going to be positioned before clocking In either
1PinkPanda [OP]23 points7m ago
See that’s what I think 🧐 it only makes sense my 10 is my time
Ristrettooo32 points7m ago
Technically it starts when the shift tells you to take your 10. Personally I think it’s reasonable to be a little lenient, we all work hard and it can easily take 2-3 minutes to get a drink and food ready and sit down! I plan people’s breaks 15 minutes apart so everyone can get a full 10 minutes of free time.
Lcolecrochet9 points7m ago
This is how I do it too.
jams101524 points7m ago
I have the nicest manager, she always assumes we need an extra five, lol
1PinkPanda [OP]7 points7m ago
That sounds amazing 🥹
clouds18321 points7m ago
if you’re able to continue working until your food and drink are made then thats preferable and would help with taking excessively long on your break, and you can ask for a 5 minute heads up from the ssv to start getting your food and drink ready/rung up so its done by your actual break time, and continue doing a task until they’re ready.
pleasedontusemyname11 points7m ago
Unless they tell you you have to take your apron off and order from cafe like a customer 🙄
gabby246813 points7m ago
Yeah I got told I couldn’t just work while I made my stuff I had to GO RIGHT NOW. But now that person stepped down :)
ThePowerPackage2 points7m ago
They don’t let you make your own drinks, that’s the prob!
1PinkPanda [OP]5 points7m ago
That’s actually really smart 🤩
icedcoffeenoclassic21 points7m ago
I was traumatized from when my manager gave me the cold shoulders for an entire shift after I took a 13 on accident. Since then I make sure to take an 8 and idgaf abt coming back up early. It’s so petty that I get yelled at for that puny reason
1PinkPanda [OP]8 points7m ago
Ya that’s horrible
Realistic_Dreams33315 points7m ago
I let people make their food/ drink. Then 10 minutes from the time you step off after making your stuff.
1PinkPanda [OP]3 points7m ago
You are amazing 🤗🤗🤗❤️
j7193672 points7m ago
same! i know it’s “against the rules” but there’s no reason to spend over half of your break waiting for food/drink. if someone’s food/drink doesn’t come out until the end of their break then i’ll usually give them an extra 3-4 mins bc yanno
ThePowerPackage1 points7m ago
Just last week, my 15 got over and I didn’t even got my drink😭, turns out that the sticker didn’t print😑
cvpocoffee1 points7m ago
I get my drink 1min before I go back on the floor on most days. I am now thinking of ordering a drink beforehand for later without ice and just add the ice when I am off on break to ensure I get my drink.
plastixhearts8 points7m ago
Idk if it’s just because of me but i have diabetes so I have to take insulin 15 mins before my break, so my SSV will give me a 15 min warning so I have time to get my food in and meds taken. They also do this to everyone else. Idk if my diabetes started that trend at my store but maybe ask for a warning
1PinkPanda [OP]6 points7m ago
I love that they take that extra mile for you 🥹🥹🥹
plastixhearts5 points7m ago
me too 🥺 my old store manager was like “well I guess you won’t eat today” but this team is incredible
1PinkPanda [OP]4 points7m ago
Ya taking insulin is no joke, I’m glad they understand that ☺️
Buffcats4206 points7m ago
I have a question I literally have a timer in my phone for my tens or my 30s and they be acting like I’m taking too long and I’m like bro I set my timers 3mins early and come back early and it’s still not good enough. I start the timer as soon as they tell me to leave for my break btw
feisty3143 points7m ago
One barista I know always says as she's stepping off the floor, "Ok, it is [current time] right now, so I'll be back at [current time + 10 minutes]." Maybe making sure they know exactly what time you left and exactly what time you'll be back would help?
Don't let them bully you out of your breaks. You are entitled to them, it is company policy (or potentially state law, depending on the state). Lunch breaks in particular, if you don't take a full 30 minutes, both you and your supervisor can get in hella trouble.
1PinkPanda [OP]2 points7m ago
Ya that’s my thought and again they tried to tell me that I need to be ready as soon as my timer goes off 🫤
feisty3143 points7m ago
If you want (though this can create it's own problems), you can reach out to the Partner Contact Center for "clarification." It's one of those things that can backfire on you though - while retaliation is strictly against company policy, if word comes down from higher up that you were right and they were wrong, there will definitely be some ruffled feathers.
1PinkPanda [OP]2 points7m ago
Yep sounds about right 😞😒 it’s frustrating
AdIll79466 points7m ago
I used to have an issue with baristas taking 30 minute tens so I put a timer above the break table. I’m not going to time someone but the expectation is that once they sit down with their stuff they start the timer, and when it goes off they come to the floor.
I think a 15 minute ten is what shifts should be preparing for considering all the shuffling and ordering required. I take over 10 minutes as well.
1PinkPanda [OP]1 points7m ago
I love that idea, sadly we don’t have a break table 😞
Toomanyboringpeople5 points7m ago
As a shift, I typically tell my Baristas not to start the ten minutes until they have their food and drink and are in the back, the break isn’t long enough to include all that stuff in there, you deserve ten minutes to sit and chill
1PinkPanda [OP]1 points7m ago
Your so amazing 🥺🥺🥺🥹
shipssiren5 points7m ago
We're told the moment we leave our position is when our ten starts
heyitsme9634 points7m ago
My 10 starts when someone takes over my position and I wait to put on my apron and wash my hands until after my timer goes off.
1PinkPanda [OP]1 points7m ago
Right SAME like that’s work related
floofxs23 points7m ago
I would check the time when I was taken off the floor and 10 minutes after that I start getting ready to get back on the floor which takes what less than minute?
bastiaanlolz2 points7m ago
for me i always get a drink so whatever time is 10 minutes after whats on the label is the time i need to be back by
Relative_Distance_322 points7m ago
i’m ngl, all of my baristas take 15s….. 🫣
1PinkPanda [OP]1 points7m ago
I mean with what what we deal with on a daily, our brains slightly melted. We need every second 🫠🫠
gorohoe2 points7m ago
i dont time my baristas when i send them bc i feel like thats just rude and showing that i dont trust them, ofc if i notice theyve been gone for a lot longer than 10 minutes ill go talk to them but otherwise 10 starts when you sit down and ends after 10 minutes, then you have a lil couple of seconds to gather your stuff and come back to the floor but 10s are sacred and last 10 minutes not 9 lmao
1PinkPanda [OP]1 points7m ago
That’s what I was thinking 🧐
tekkil2 points7m ago
I used to just say that my break starts when I sit down and ends when I get up
loki86753092 points7m ago
I’m a shift and technically I do start people’s 10s when I send them. But I don’t usually keep track. I only start keeping track when someone has taken a 15-20 already (which has happened a few times). I’m at a store with VERY sparse coverage though. So usually someone is flexing for someone else’s 10. If I have the coverage, then the 10 can start after they get their food and drink, if they’re still working while they get made. But we have a partner at my store who will be told to take a 10 and then make frankensandwhiches that take 5 minutes to make and then a 5+ modification drink. So that would be another time that I start the count when I send someone. But someone taking a 15 once in a while is nbd to me if we have the coverage.
bloop2302 points7m ago
Sounds like someone else is taking too long to come back from or start their breaks and they’re trying to set a firm standard without calling any one out. When I go to send my folks on the floor, I always offer to heat up their food prior to cut down on the lag time before they sit down. That way, when they head back with their food it’s pretty clear start their break. I always give a little, “see you at -ten minutes from now-!” Just to be firm about when I should be seeing them back on the floor. Sounds like good intentions with correcting standards but just bad communication. Hopefully the communication gets better.
PotatoFairy4512 points7m ago
My 10's always turn into 15's so no they aren't 10 minutes
champshere2 points7m ago
You work with assholes.
1PinkPanda [OP]1 points7m ago
Damn 😕 that sucks I think their amazing, I just think they’re being taught wrong
GetMiataHere2 points7m ago
i like to joke with other baristas and say "I'll see you guys in 11 minutes"
FireWalkWithMe991 points7m ago
Personally i almost always order food so i judge my ten by the time on the sticker.
One time i had to use the restroom after and my store manager claimed I was on my 10 for 20 minutes im fairly certain I wasn’t and she just misremembered the time I started my 10.
Other than that time though ive never gotten complaints,
dxdewhxt1 points7m ago
Officially, your ten starts when you get your drink (unfortunately not your food.) After you put in your order, your shift lead might want you to clean until your drink is ready, but if it’s slow (at my store at least), we let the barista sit and wait for their drink. Sometimes when it’s busy, there have been moments barista’s tens have been 15/20s and there hasn’t been a problem. I’m pretty sure there’s something written about this in the partner handbook, because it’s agreed upon in the entire store, managers included.
