Is my manager lying about this? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Scared-Ad-7678
My manager is claiming that once you pull a ticket out of the machine it alerts the customer that their drink will be ready in about 2 minutes. However every time I use the mobile app that never happens for me, nor can I see it being realistic. When you place an order it tells you “ your drink will be ready at()” and gives an estimated time. That time doesn’t change regardless of when you pull the ticket. One day I was sequencing two drinks, and remaking one drink that a customer ordered wrong, and my manager ridiculed me for having three drinks in front of me. When I explain to her why I had three drinks she still told me “ you should really only be pulling one ticket at a time”
sosaidsmudge 168 points 7m ago
The rate at which you pull stickers is what tells the app what the estimated wait time will be. So if you’re pulling nine sticker at a time trying to find one it thinks you are a barista god and Karen only needs to wait 3-4 minutes to pick up her mobile order
jah_nuthin 121 points 7m ago
I mean sure, but let’s be real, Karen is finishing her mobile order at the speaker box
sosaidsmudge 26 points 7m ago
You are so not wrong hahaha

We have two regular mobile orders that order right before the speaker then immediately drive up expecting it to be ready. Every. Damn. Day.
HarleySpicedLatte 1 points 7m ago
Does the DPM tell the customer it's ready? That is if the store is using DPM.
clouds183 132 points 7m ago
one sticker at a time???? do they not enforce sequencing heavily??? my store would be on your ass if you only pulled one at a time thats ridiculous. two minimum always being worked on.
Scared-Ad-7678 [OP] 47 points 7m ago
Dude I was sequencing two drink, and a customer asked me to remake their drink. So as I was doing that my manager (in the middle of a rush) to “coach” me on why I should only have one cup in front of me at a time. She also came into work high and wasn’t fired so she’s clearly not all there
Ordinary-Theory-8289 47 points 7m ago
Girl I hate you break it to ya but at least 70% of the people in this industry are high at any given moment
Scared-Ad-7678 [OP] 34 points 7m ago
Most of my coworkers are stoned. Which is fairly normal but she was on heroin and cursing out customers man 😭
Ordinary-Theory-8289 30 points 7m ago
Lol well nodding out on heroin is certainly a different scenario
TheAdobeEmpire 11 points 7m ago
yo this store sounds wild i wanna work there
HiiAlberta 6 points 7m ago
Lol thats the only way to do CS or DT
hollsberry 4 points 7m ago
Report to ethics and compliance
CheyenneJudith 1 points 7m ago
You know, hate to admit this is not the first time I’ve heard of a partner shooting up heroin on the job…
morningchampagne 6 points 7m ago
You were right and shouldn’t have been coached. If only you could coach her on the drug and alcohol policy…
thechamelioncircuit 38 points 7m ago
Uhhh your store enforces sequencing?? I’m convinced that half our baristas have never heard the word outside of my coaching.
Hot-Independence8670 42 points 7m ago
if i watched a barista on bar that WASNT sequencing i think my head would explode
thechamelioncircuit 16 points 7m ago
*laughs nervously*
Hot-Independence8670 4 points 7m ago
pls😭😭
snarkysnape 20 points 7m ago
Awww man I love sequencing, getting in your groove on hot bar, shutting everything else out but plowing through those fuckers at lightning pace…….

Ok I didn’t have to do this every day, because tarbucks, so when I got to actually put my skills into place I had so much fun.
Next_Resolution_3889 8 points 7m ago
Y’all get a chance to sequence???? 😭 I got a barista who loves to pull my stickers to tell me how far behind I am and then jump onto bar and it makes me feel like shit. Or when they keep pulling me away from bar to do random shit 🥲🥲🥲
snarkysnape 6 points 7m ago
Oh it’s tarbucks lol, so it was me solo m-fri from 8-10, then I had (maybe) 1 more at 11, a third at 12 (maybe) on sat/sun. At that time I had one person who would only POS in the am, 1 who I’d put on cold bar IF I had them, and I’d solo both when there were breaks. I loved going beast mode as long as I don’t ALSO have to run cold. Then it’s just annoying if we’re slammed.

Edit: I’d also giggle with glee on Black Friday because I love chaos so take from that what you will.
marigshu 2 points 7m ago
SAME lol
HarleySpicedLatte 1 points 7m ago
Nobody else does it that way.
I was told....
The way my store does it....
The way I do it....
I watch everyone else and they.....
mcasper96 1 points 7m ago
My store doesn't appear from one partner (who isn't even a shift) yelling at every newbie who isn't sequencing

When you pull a sticker, it moves from “received” to “in progress” on the DPM. I don’t know what happens on the technical side beyond that.
Ann-Drogyny 21 points 7m ago
There is a way to click on each item to confirm that it’s ready, so I think that would be the notification saying it’s good to pick up
b99__throwaway 16 points 7m ago
i think it makes the average wait time shorter overall bc it looks like the drink in front of it was finished already and took less time (if that makes sense) even if you have 4 stickers on your bar. i get not pulling too many stickers, but not even 2?? i like to have 3-4 so i can plan ahead
-LilDinoNuggs- 3 points 7m ago
We have to manually push the button that sends it to in progress at our store. Pulling the ticket changes nothing.
HarleySpicedLatte 2 points 7m ago
What kind of system is this?
mimitalu 16 points 7m ago
We were told the rate that tickets are pulled is factored into our metrics that determine staffing. So if you pull like 5 tickets at a time then it thinks all those drinks are being done at a time and that the level of staffing at the time can handle that level of drink orders at that time. I have no idea how true it is but it's something all the recent green beans have been coached on for that reason.
paintthatface 10 points 7m ago
It’s an algorithm, so the faster you pull stickers and the more stickers that are held back in the “received” part of DPM the longer the wait time will be. I tell my partners to only pull the stickers you’re working on plus one to add to your sequence. So only 3 or 4 at a time. More than that overwhelms baristas anyway.
ElevatorsAreScary 9 points 7m ago
This is true
TRoseee 9 points 7m ago
As a barista trainer I’ve also been told this in a district wide training meeting. Not sure how true it actually is but I have been told.
BlueWaters99 2 points 7m ago
District Wide Training Meeting???? I’m a trainer and SSV and have never been told of a distinct meeting? Ugh!
testingaurora 7 points 7m ago
When I order on mobile, it doesn't give me any kind of alert. I check out, it tells me estimated time. Once and awhile it will send a notification that my order is ready, often 1 min after the latest estimated time. But rarely do I get that notification. Your manager is full of shit about 2 min once you pull the sticker
BeyoncesLaptop 3 points 7m ago
Same. When I mobile order it just gives estimated wait time and by the time the app tells me my drink is ready I’ve already got it from the queue.
testingaurora 3 points 7m ago
Does it tell you it's ready every time? I only get that notification 1x out of 7
BeyoncesLaptop 3 points 7m ago
Nope! Tbh probably about the same rate as yours.
I_like_to_know 4 points 7m ago
You only get notified if the store is marking the order as complete in the DPM. I'd like to see the stores that have time for that nonsense though.

as an ex sbux barista it killed me to see other baristas pulling 9+ stickers at a time. take your time. it doesn’t matter how bad the rush is. only pull 1-3 stickers at a time, sequence properly, and handoff. whoever needs to hear it, this job isn’t worth being overwhelmed the entire time. it’s ok to take it slow and fuck the managers/shifts who say otherwise. they just care about the company making more money
Mediocre_Study8460 5 points 7m ago
If you use the DPM i think its called on the app and click orders as ready then it alerts them from my understanding
LadyZode 4 points 7m ago
They want you to sequence but also not sequence at the same time lol
QueerLemonMeringue 4 points 7m ago
Yep. Totally lying.
jordanshaw89 4 points 7m ago
I hate to be “that guy” here, but I think the real reason is because it is not a part of the beverage routine or the beverage sequencing routine, although I also have heard that supposedly the customer gets a notification, how true that last part is? Idk but I will say I have coached against that in the past on the original basis of not being standard.
H321652976 4 points 7m ago
No. I pull all my stickers so my cold bar can help and i know whats ahead. Ive never heard this. Theres different settings so who knows if its something you can add. Ive mobiled before and never received a notification either
verdeuce 3 points 7m ago
Nope. It’s been confirmed that this is a myth from the higher ups on workplace
moodycatdog81 3 points 7m ago
Yes only 1 sticker at a time, it alerts the guest that there drink is in progress but even if it's busy the mobile app sets us up to fail because it quotes unrealistic wait times and in no way is real time. So if u are 30 minutes behind and someone does a new mobile order, the app will tell them to go to the store in 7 to 15minutes. There in lies the actual problem. Sequencing is key to a successful peak, but your MOP partner should be helping with handoff and customer connections so you can stay in production.
HypnoticPeaches 11 points 7m ago
MOP partners? Ah… that mythical beast I’ve heard of only in training.
BeardiesRule112 2 points 7m ago
Who the fuck has an MOP partner lmaoooooo
thestoneethude 1 points 7m ago
mobile/cafe bar.
HamburgIar_ 3 points 7m ago
I know it used to be like that. Not sure if it still is.
no0dles130 2 points 7m ago
High mop store here, the app can see how many drinks are in queue and tells the customer the wait time before placing an order. I’ve checked during our busiest hours where the app tells the customers estimated wait time to be between 20-30 minutes if there was a long queue. At one occasion a customer just came to ask for a refund because I’m they saw 20mins and couldn’t wait. I always hated when baristas pull massive stickers cause it tells the customers the drinks are ready in 3-5 when realistically it should’ve been 15mins. It’s based on how many drinks are in queue and the complexity of the beverages.
VanillaGorilla602 2 points 7m ago
how tf are there baristas here that don't sequence?? this isn't papas freezeria 😭
[deleted] 1 points 7m ago

glossysejin 1 points 7m ago
How can you even sequence drinks and be effective on bar if you dont pull more than one sticker at a time?? Idk but if im going to cold bar im taking all the stickers with me
Jaded_Fun_7133 1 points 7m ago
I’ve gotten the notification on my end many times. My manager has also said the same
Gameb0i6 1 points 7m ago
That’s what I was also told by my old and recent manager.
BigDillLadyPickle 1 points 7m ago
Yeah I at least pull the a whole order if not more. You are going to be sitting there for a long time pulling one sticker at a time
vegan-trash 1 points 7m ago
It does adjust the wait time. But from what I’ve been told by my managers is that if you’re pulling a lot of mobile stickers then it’ll adjust the time, like when someone makes a trail across the entire bar. I’m not sure the exact numbers or how it measures. But, what I have had to do is to learn to comply and bar how they ask of me. I have asked if it’s okay my customers wait 20,30,40 minutes and they said yes. If you’re doing the routines as they ask (planted positions planted, using DPM, pulling 2 stickers at a time or however many to sequence) then they can’t get mad at you. It’s inconvenient but I stopped caring about customer wait times and focus on me. One at a time and don’t check the clock
