What makes you stay? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by rfpetrie
Because I reconsider my choices a lot... ssv for a few months and getting burnt out already tbh. I've been serving the Siren for 1 year now.
catgirlmunist 106 points 7m ago
I need to make money to afford to live and starbucks is marginally more tolerable than most other jobs I've had.
rfpetrie [OP] 31 points 7m ago
Marginally. Well said. It is the most $ I've ever made...so far
OkFunny9774 7 points 7m ago
Least money I’ve made in a really long time but the MOST tolerable job I have ever worked since I was 15
catgirlmunist 2 points 7m ago
Yeah I've had better-paying jobs but they were always more soulcrushing. For all the problems, at least starbucks isn't sitting in a cubicle staring at a computer screen for 9 hours straight.
OkFunny9774 2 points 7m ago
I was a line cook, worked in restaurants my whole entire life besides lil small jobs until Starbucks basically. It could be much much worst
threeivy 54 points 7m ago
I’m just over a year in and it’s starting to get more taxing on me than it’s been before, but I stay because the idea of having to start over at a new job is terrifying and I do like my coworkers a lot
rfpetrie [OP] 7 points 7m ago
I work with a great team of people too . Even if we're not besties they're all hard workers and easy to have conversation with, I feel guilt when I think about breaking up with such a stellar team 😭 I am also terrified and not great at saving my money for such leaps apparently...do wish I could get more hours; even when I'm overworked the paycheck...ain't great.
cora388 31 points 7m ago
benefits tbh, any other job i had was like “here’s a 20% discount ig” but sbux gives 30% on top of free food and drinks and a lot of other things
rfpetrie [OP] 16 points 7m ago
They are great benefits. But I'll say it first, I think I deserve more rn.
blo0ming 25 points 7m ago
I’m staying until I get my degree, I’ve been a partner for almost 4 years a shift for 2, Im moving soon and plan on stepping down and doing the bare minimum hours needed to get benefits. I loved this job but after the pandemic began and all the shit this company has been doing has really taken a toll on myself and other partners.
badbaristuh 16 points 7m ago
I really thought this was a fairly easy job that was worth staying for the benefits until I quit and took a job at Trader Joe’s which has better raise potential, great health insurance, and 0% of the stress of supervising at sbux. While I thought I had to stick through it and stay, I’d look forward to seeing my favorite, genuinely nice regulars every day, and try and make time for stress breaks throughout the day for myself and my baristas where we’d all take a turn doing something fun (trying a new drink, posting a post-it on our customer question board, etc). If you’re burnt out, there’s nothing wrong with shopping around for jobs — Starbucks can and will replace you if you decide to leave, bc that’s how they do their thing, unfortunately.
Deep_Mission_4998 7 points 7m ago
I worked at Trader Joe’s and I really loved it there. I would recommend it to anyone!

Need the insurance for my gender affirming surgery
SepsSammy 1 points 7m ago
Good luck! ♥️
saintdaffy 1 points 7m ago
thanks
badatlife15 12 points 7m ago
The biggest reason for me is having a job with health insurance that only requires 20 hours a week and I can work those hours fairly easily around my full time job. Other reasons are I have a good team and have very few issues with the majority of my coworkers and have a supportive SM, plus I have a good deal of regular customers who are kind and seem to enjoy seeing me as much as I enjoy seeing them so that helps since my self esteem is literal garbage (check the username lol). It’s definitely exhausting and I consider giving it up from time to time, but there doesn’t seem to be enough bad pressure on me to actually push towards making a change.
rfpetrie [OP] 5 points 7m ago
This job was a huge step up & really fast promotion for me and I love that. The benefits were what got me to really want to work with sbux in the first place because it's much better than any other job I've had, but when I see what some others are offered...pto for one...makes me want to keep looking :(
thewannabwitch 2 points 7m ago
I work at a licensed sbux with Kroger and the benefits are amazing. 25 hours a week for insurance and you aquire paid vacation, 5 paid personal days, and sick pay after a year with the company. Since we're licensed it's a low-key environment and i still get to make the fun drinks and have my regulars. Every year that you stay you get more vacation time and more personal days, so i have many coworkers who get 60+ hours of vacation time to use yearly and 10+ personal days. Our health, dental, and vision insurance is amazing at my store and we just started having the same mental health benefits that sbux offers. I'm not paid as much as I could be paid at a corporate sbux, but it's maybe a $2/hour difference and i get to have a proper vacation every year.
Imaginarybluntallday 7 points 7m ago
Literally I learn to let go. I just hit the 2 year mark and it’s been honestly coming to terms with what I can and cannot control, especially as an SSV. There is only so much we have the ability to do day in and day out for the siren… if one day my best is showing up in time and making it through my shift, then that’s it. Another time it might be going above and bleaching trash areas and white counters to make ‘em sparkle. Know that I won’t do anything that puts me out of my comfort zone or limit, but I still perform my responsibilities well, and every shift; I just do it in a way that makes the days go by better or the work more tolerable sometimes. The siren gets me almost 40 hours a week, and often OT— I cannot stress myself out about coffee that long or I would’ve pulled all my hair out by now.
idonthinksoannie 2 points 7m ago
This is perfectly said. I'm an SM and this is all I would ever want or expect from my partners.
dlcksuck 7 points 7m ago
Almost three years in and I’m only staying because I do the asu program
fireflywaltz 7 points 7m ago
SSV almost to a year and I feel the burnout so much. For right now it's the benefits that are keeping me here, but constantly having to scrounge for hours is wearing so thin
rfpetrie [OP] 1 points 7m ago
Desperate for hours yet I feel so run down each week :(
Deep_Mission_4998 5 points 7m ago
I really enjoy the benefits. Free food and beverages, lyra, headspace, and asu online. Not to mention the insurance and low hour minimum. It’s nice to get tips every week as opposed to daily.

The hours work better for me. I usually work mornings or early mid. At previous jobs they would only schedule me late at night for closing and that was not good for me, bc I have that mindset of “I have work at 2 which is basically 1 which means I need to be ready by 12:30 which means xyz” lol plus I would get anxiety waiting everyday

I like my coworkers and the relationship between coworkers is a lot better than at other places. I’ve worked in food trucks, and I worked in grocery stores in the customer service dept for years. Weirdly competitive and catty in the customer service department. Lots of drama and gossip. But I feel like in Starbucks (and other food related jobs) coworkers have each other’s backs against shitty customers

I love coffee too!!! I prefer to keep moving at work. And seeing cute dogs in dt is wonderful.
-_-slimshady 4 points 7m ago
honestly, the asu program. free college? fuck yeah
kikiikoalaa 4 points 7m ago
ASU :/ only been working for sbux for 1 year and I’ll probably be here 2.5-3 more years til I finish my degree :( barely scraping by w the hours but don’t have time for a second job while in school. It’s a struggle.
rfpetrie [OP] 1 points 6m ago
I'm finding it hard to dedicate time/be flexible to a second job while just working for sbux, couldn't imagine juggling school too! I do wish I had known about the program sooner, but I have debt now instead. And a degree that I obviously do not use lol Oh well.
Foreign_Service3102 3 points 7m ago
Nothing. I quit a few months ago and I'm enjoying working at McDonald's more.
Outrageous_Sorbet_72 3 points 7m ago
i love my coworkers too much to try and find another place
cryingincanada 3 points 7m ago
I love my coworkers. However, I may have an opportunity to work Monday to Friday at a smaller cafe. If I do, I’m scared to quit because I don’t want to leave them short.
rfpetrie [OP] 1 points 6m ago
I've felt like this about ever job I've ever had... in the end ya gotta do whats best for you & pretty much guarantee they will get someone to take your spot. Sad but true
kingkira123 3 points 7m ago
Been a ssv for 2.5 years, only thing keeping me is the 23$hr other than that I want to leave
butterflymomo 3 points 7m ago
i worked at my old store for over 3 years, quit, moved, and then reapplied and got hired at a different store a year later and been here for a year. tbh, i really like the benefits, and i know how to do my job and do it well. it comes easy to me, plus every other job i've worked before and in between i have hated the way management runs things. it's not an overly hard job imo, just very stressful. i can deal with it tho for the pay 🤷🏼‍♀️
pupgarcia 3 points 7m ago
I always say sbux is a toxic relationship. it sucks and my mental/psychical health always seems to decline when working here but I genuinely love making drinks. It's a fun job and it pays better than what I was being paid as a grocery store manager. [$10.50 an hour] I also have a sense of security working here because I'm familiar with how it works. in other words, I have a breakdown when I get home for work but I get to eat free grilled cheeses and tell my free therapist about it🫠
rfpetrie [OP] 2 points 6m ago
Looking into Lyra now lol
josiechamp 3 points 7m ago
My coworkers!! I love working with my coworkers. Some of them make the job so fun even if it's stressful at times. I'm also going to start school through ASU online in January and that's a huge plus as I'm broke and can't afford to go to school on my own. They also match 401k up to a certain percent and although I can't reap the benefits right now, my mom said that's a good thing lol. I've only been here since mid March of this year and I've definitely had some days where I've felt burnt out but I work through them and remember all the great things this job has provided me.
TinyBeanBabey 3 points 7m ago
I can't find anywhere near me willing to a) hire full time and b) has full coverage insurance. I would not survive without it. I've worked here for two years and tbh it's been hell for me and I'm abt done :(
rfpetrie [OP] 2 points 6m ago
I've needed to take breaks throughout the year (a week or more) to keep me from just losing it. It seems like I'm okay to everyone else but I'm so burnt out/depressed. Ask myself why I'm even doing this... but after a few days off I'm happy to come back and hang out with my coworkers and even a rush here and there is welcome to take my mind off things. I have yet to find a job that matches this pay/these hours & benefits, but health is more important for long term! It feels like a give and take, but I'm trying to see the best parts and relish in that for now. I hope you can too until something better comes your way :)
RubySapphireSage 3 points 7m ago
It’s the closest to me , with all due respect I actually don’t like my job , it’s the only job that pays well in my vicinity
voidsoda_ 3 points 7m ago
my co workers are what keep me here because I care about them so much, once I move away and have to transfer, im getting out asap
ketchupsnumberonefan 3 points 7m ago
Pay is pretty decent for what it is, pretty flexible hours for me being in college, and I love my co workers/besties
starbucksbarist28 3 points 7m ago
I’ve been here three years. I don’t have any other expirence and I love the benefits. I couldn’t get them anywhere else and have as much fun. It is tiring so I often take three days off (typically every month or two) and just take time off to have a break from Starbucks! It’s not a lot but having small breaks make it a lot easier
Suspicious-Crystal 3 points 7m ago
Pay is not great but better than most retail fast food types. I stay because it's a very easy job and I enjoy being able to talk to strangers all day. Lots of people aren't cut out for public service (I mean customer service) but I am. And I work with a great team.
smoolbeean 2 points 7m ago
ASU… im not about to have student loans… not in this economy
lilkiosk 2 points 7m ago
I’ve been with Starbucks for 2.5 years and I’m at the end of my journey for sure. It’s not the only job I can get, but it is a job where I’m guaranteed to at least get along with more of my coworkers than other jobs and I’ve actually been able to make friends with my coworkers outside of work which is nearly impossible for me otherwise.
cyanidegay 2 points 7m ago
i'm staying for my favorite coworker, the free coffee, and a bet i have with myself to make it two years at one job lol (almost there!)
dazedinreverse 2 points 7m ago
I talked myself out of applying for ssv after being a barista for a year, I know I'd get burnt out. I do already but im thankful I have the ability to take a week off here and there without it hurting my ability to pay bills.

However I stay because the job itself is fun to me. I enjoy coffee and enjoy making the menu drinks as well as some of the fun combos customers come up with. There's little I dont know when it comes to my tasks so I feel comfortable and confident with my day.

I can also say I'm lucky to work in a location thats not terrible with rude customers. We have one here and there mostly people passing through, but our regulars are all so nice.
rfpetrie [OP] 1 points 6m ago
Hopefully you have some supportive coworkers & higher ups if you ever do decide to move up to ssv! That's been a huge part for me. I couldn't do this without them.
ProfessorSalt413 2 points 7m ago
My health insurance makes my testosterone 11 dollars mostly and I get free drinks
Purple_Coffee653 2 points 7m ago
It's the $$ in my area this job allows me to provide for myself and small family. Rent in the area is outrageous for the working class, I'm able to pay my bills and have a tiny bit left over. Take a vacation I'm sure you have days built up and go relax. Best way to avoid burn out is to use sick/vacation days when you can to take a mental break day. Keep in mind holiday/seasonal depression is going on right now which could add extra mental drain. Take care of yourself OP
rfpetrie [OP] 1 points 6m ago
Thanks!! Taking some days off at the end of this month to visit fam and it's keeping me going. Lol
PotatoFairy451 2 points 7m ago
I just like being a barista. It gets stressful sometimes but my coworkers are amazing and I love making drinks so much. Occasionally I get pretty burned out but then I just take a few days off and I'm ok
dirtychai0218 2 points 7m ago
free education n i love my coworkers/ this is one of the easier food service jobs i’ve had.
_JP_63 2 points 7m ago
Honestly? I just love my coworkers and customers, I don't think I aspire to become an SSV anytime soon, nor I see myself seeking any other jobs soon either. I get paid enough to save some cash and spend on what I like (still living with fam) and it's fun, working for Starbucks in my store and area is genuinely fun. Sure I feel tired af at the end of the day and sometimes I need a rest from it but I definitely enjoy it and can't complain.
MatchingColors 2 points 7m ago
As a shift, I am payed well. I’d be hard pressed to find a job with equal pay at this point.

Spotify is cool.

PTO/sick pay is pretty cool.

Health insurance is cool.

My coworkers are cool.

Free bachelors is pretty cool.

And lastly, it’s pretty easy. Sure, it can get chaotic at times, but the job is not difficult IMO.
sparkleblarkle 2 points 7m ago
Flexibility with scheduling, I’ve had to change my availability quite a few times since starting last year and my manager has been incredibly accommodating. I also LOVE my coworkers, seriously, best crew ever.
grlcbr8th 2 points 7m ago
Wage, benefits & discounts I get on other services I use like my phone and car insurance.
maxim_moon 2 points 7m ago
Gender affirming surgery and I want to be approved for a mortgage in a couple of months and it’s good to be at the same job for a while for that
testingaurora 2 points 7m ago
I heard starbucks won't pay for the surgery anymore, as of October
idonthinksoannie 1 points 7m ago
Source?
testingaurora 1 points 7m ago
Just someone on this subR. Guess I'm misremembering too, they said it's not 100% covered anymore.

I’m staying for the SSV pay and health benefits. I have a second job but they don’t offer health insurance. That’s what’s keeping me here for now. I do love my coworkers. We’ve grown a lot over the past few months together. But overall it’s exhausting.
chainsofgold 2 points 7m ago
this is the first job i’ve ever managed to get on my own and i don’t know how long it will take to get another one

plus i really like making latte art lol
Young-Jeezy 1 points 7m ago
I was around for 7 years no idea how, I would say working there has gotten so much worse over the years. The 18th is my last day. Idk if you can find another job then leave or maybe transfer to a cafe store? The baristas vibes do help tho
Flowerfuls 1 points 7m ago
College and I’ve been making big use of their benefits. So it’s all worth in the end

Technically, I’ve hit my one year with Starbucks this month, which has been my plan since I began working. However, I will be officially leaving within the month for a different job in my field of study. Despite going through a extreme hell of a year (e.g., losing my father or other relatives, being diagnosed with major depressive disorder, completing my graduate degree, etc.), I stayed because I didn’t want to seem like a failure in multiple people’s eyes, the money, and my co-workers.

However, despite “making it through”, I probably should have quit months ago.
rfpetrie [OP] 1 points 7m ago
Sorry to hear about your hellish year 😭 I hope u get a few personal days in there at least!! ❤
I am totally with you on that...I always feel a loyalty to my job/crew and I don't want to disappoint or make my resume seem like I can't stay in a job??
