pet peeve: messy bar partners(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by idkcassie
idc how fast you are on bar. if you make a mess and don’t clean as you go you’re just making your job/your partners’ jobs harder because then someone will have to come and clean up after you/use a messy station. plus it looks really unsanitary from the customers’ view.
take the extra half second to not over pour a drink, to rinse your pitchers and steam out the wands. put away your milks. please. this is the biggest thing i coach my green beans on — clean as you go so that the bar is clean and easy for anyone to use.
Liberalmuffin235 points7m ago
no literally. and pls fucking clean before we switch roles
idkcassie [OP]126 points7m ago
when you take over and there’s four milks out, dried milk on the steaming wand, a dirty shot glass, and a puddle of watered down milk on the counter 😭😭
Liberalmuffin48 points7m ago
don’t forget open alternative milks not in the fridge
ItzBoogieMan10 points7m ago
Because they are all up on the counter 😂
barlemniscate11 points7m ago
How should we keep the shot glasses cleaned? Rinse them once in a while?
idkcassie [OP]26 points7m ago
ah man that one is just my little thing. i like to rinse mine with hot water and keep it rinsed just like i do milk pitchers. clean shot glasses are so pretty
northernelis23 points7m ago
Is it not standard to rinse the shot glasses after using them? Or am I misreading. I always rinse mine with the pitcher rinser immediately after using it 😬 it feels so gross not to
barlemniscate5 points7m ago
Fr tho. They’re like prisms. Sometimes I use the pitcher rinser one mine just to avoid whatever minimal cross contact there may be between caf and decaf.
iklno1 points7m ago
same! eventually it just becomes automatic/muscle memory. same as anything else here.
SmittyComic69 points7m ago
it's fun to watch people think they are so much faster, only to have to stop after 8 drinks to have to rinse all the blenders and pitchers.
and some could be WAY faster if they just rinsed as they went so they wouldn't have to stop every few drinks to clean up.
idkcassie [OP]18 points7m ago
exactly! or when *I* have to rinse the blenders to make my drinks. like fine have your messy hot bar but for the love of god rinse the cold bar wears since they’re shared between drive and cafe bar
SmittyComic17 points7m ago
when people are like: we need 8 blenders and 12 steaming pitchers!
no, you need half that and THAT is still kinda too much if it's one person per station.
idkcassie [OP]15 points7m ago
i keep at most three of everything… three drinks is the max you should be working on at a time feasibly and everything should get rinsed as you go so it doesn’t make sense to clutter the bar with more dishes
SmittyComic3 points7m ago
can't tell you how many times you'll see someone pulling five stickers and just forgetting a shaker or Frappuccino because they're not saying in routine.
good job making that 3rd and 4th drink really fast, they are now leaving at the same time as the person who ordered 4 minutes before them are.
bigfoots-rightnipple60 points7m ago
I’m an absolute disaster on bar, things are so messy but I constantly have a rag on me and wipe it down as often as I can. I’m a messy bar partner and a messy bar drives me crazy.
idkcassie [OP]21 points7m ago
if you’re trying this is not directed at you lol. this is directed at the messy partners who don’t care that it’s messy
ThatArtBitch20206 points7m ago
Same. I’m very accident prone and I try so hard to keep my place clean as possible. Cause I know if I have a bunch of stuff out, I’m gonna knock it over. Like something was wedged in the fridge weirdly the other day and I opened it and it fell and spilled everywhere. I felt so so bad but went and mopped it up like almost immediately. Like I always clean up my stuff unless someone is like no stay where you are I got it. But I always do feel so bad when it happens.
Altruistic-Bake-763455 points7m ago
when i was a baby bean, my trainer always told me “no cleaning until you get all the drinks out” and now I realize how disgusting that is 😭 at my store, we could go hours without a lull in tickets
idkcassie [OP]28 points7m ago
that’s the thing exactly… there’s always going to be more drinks. cleaning as you go is more hygienic and just overall better 😭 once you’re in the habit of being clean it doesn’t slow you down.
dontcry202220 points7m ago
>once you’re in the habit of being clean it doesn’t slow you down.
Even if it does slow you down... you know what else slows you down? Having milk cartons crowding your space and trying to avoid getting a cups wet by little puddles of milk on the bar.
maine_coon212321 points7m ago
This is literally the opposite of what professional chefs teach and make comments on lol supposed to be clean as you go
No_Yogurt_46028 points7m ago
Hm almost as though it's fast food and not actually a cafe lol
sillygoofysecret27 points7m ago
ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A MIDSHIFT PERSON WHO CLOCKS OUT BEFORE THE AFTERNOON RUSH… PLEASE JUST CLEAN UP AS YOU GO OR AT LEAST BEFORE YOU LEAVE SO US CLOSERS DON’T HAVE TO PANIC PREP RIGHT AS PEOPLE COME IN ugh
dontcry202223 points7m ago
>put away your milks.
My little hack for saving time with this steps is to put 1 away when I get out another. Saves time by bending down and opening the door fewer times
No_Yogurt_46029 points7m ago
It's not the most common but there are definitely folks who rely entirely on CS to clean up after them. Which is totally fine up to a point, but jeez some people take too many liberties in that respect.
-Ana--9 points7m ago
Omg this drives me crazy! I have no idea how people can work when the counter is flooded and everything is sticky 😩😩
Also it's even worse when you are dto/w and the drive bar is handing you cups that wet cause they haven't cleaned their area or themselves 🤢🤢
dontcry20228 points7m ago
>if you make a mess and don’t clean as you go you’re just making your job/your partners’ jobs harder because then someone will have to come and clean up after you/use a messy station.
One of my SSVs is very strict about people cleaning their station before someone else takes over, which I appreciate both as the person leaving bar and the person starting on bar. I like that she gives us that minute or so to clean it before/as the next person takes over because sometimes it does get messy but that doesn't mean I want it to be someone else's problem, I just need things to slow down a sec so I can really address it
happypoptart08 points7m ago
Don’t even get me started. We have a couple at my store that are literal tornadoes. Like clean your shit up!!!! Stresses me out especially if you have to go on bar after them
rudebii8 points7m ago
As a trainer clean-as-you-go and keeping your station clean we’re things I enforced.
coffee-and-chillll7 points7m ago
I’m a rehire and I didn’t realize how bad the issue of not putting milks away can be until recently. At my previous stores, no one left milk out except for *maybe* a 2% during morning peak, and even then that milk was used up so fast that it really wasn’t left out long at all.
At the store I’m at now…yikes. Milks are left out for HOURS. I’ve noticed I’m only one of a few who ever put milks away. If I’m put on bar, I immediately put all the milks away, as there’s usually one of each milk (dairy and non-dairy…ugh) just hanging out on the counter. Milk is a perishable item, yet you wouldn’t know that being at this store lol
I find it quite concerning that partners just leave milk out…like would you want to drink that whole milk that’s been sitting out on cold bar for an hour? I know I wouldn’t. Considering partners at this store casually work off the clock, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised there’s the milk issue. It’s kinda scary how rough some store locations can be :/
idkcassie [OP]4 points7m ago
yeah I’m a rehire as well. the amount of undated non dairy’s i find in the fridges stresses me out.
coffee-and-chillll1 points7m ago
Same! I just gave up because me, 1 partner, out of 20 partners being the only one who dates non-dairy milks quickly became a losing battle. It’s just not a hill I’m willing to die on lol
badatlife157 points7m ago
Hi it’s me messy bar partner, but I really do try to keep things clean. I already feel like I’m too slow and to add cleaning in throws me off sequencing because my brain literally can’t focus on cleaning when I should be focusing on getting the next drink ready. But I make a strong effort to at least not leave pitchers with milks or too many milks out, I also try to wipe things down when I’m at a standstill waiting for shots to pull or when it starts to feel overwhelming/I see another partner with a rag so it prompts me to ask to have it when they’re done. But I will always make sure to clean my area before I get pulled off and any time I happen to not have drinks. My thing is for me getting better at being a fast and clean bar partner would require me to have more bar time and I’m like second or third string bar partner so hard to get better if you don’t get chances to practice and improve. So to counter this, my pet peeve are partners who refuse to do anything but bar.
idkcassie [OP]6 points7m ago
I totally understand that! this is why I coach it from the get go as a trainer, it’s easier if it’s how you start. getting fast on bar takes awhile, and it’s hard to sequence in cleaning up if you aren’t use to it. this isn’t meant to throw shade at newer/still learning baristas, it’s just meant towards baristas who know what they’re doing/are comfy on bar and leave a mess even when they don’t need to.
badatlife152 points7m ago
I get that but I’m a 2.5 year barista, it’s definitely not how I was trained and I was trained at a very different time because it was right at the beginning of covid, our store was very much well staffed so everyone was planted and only doing drive thru. But I think there needs to be some consideration of different ways of thinking, I hate being seen as a messy and/or slow bar partner because I understand both of those things are important but I don’t know how to change the way my brain processes things. I get though that your original post was more about the partners who just don’t care, I do care, I just feel like I’m doing the best I can and it’s not going to look like it to others.
HarleyLeMay4 points7m ago
I used to work with one particular partner where when the SSV said she was gonna be put on DT for this shift instead of bar, she literally WHINED. All “noooooo” in high pitch voice. Like, girl, we all have to do every position. You can’t just camp out on bar. That isn’t your only job as a barista. The only reason you’re good at bar is bc that’s all you ever do, which is why you can’t easily do any other position.
badatlife153 points7m ago
Yeah I get not liking some positions, I don’t love DTO mostly for getting misgendered so much, but sometimes just trying to understand what customers are wanting is so frustrating, but I never complain I go where I’m told. If my SSV asks where I’d like to be I’ll sometimes say I’d prefer not to go on DTO, but am good literally anywhere else. I know my barring has gotten better and I know the few in particular who get a ton of bar time are good, but it’s frustrating sometimes.
CatalyticGenesis6 points7m ago
i don't even understand how you walk away from a milky steaming wand. like. part of my original training stressed that as soon as you finish steaming that milk you clean the steaming wand off. i usually do it before i even pour the milk, just with how i sequence.
and yet I'll walk up to the mastrena sometimes to find a crusty steaming wand uhhh no thank you!
idkcassie [OP]3 points7m ago
yo same 😭😭 the crusty steam wands absolutely obliterate me
spookyboi136 points7m ago
im absolutely guilty of being a lil messy on bar due to not having the best hand eye coordination, but i tell myself that part of finishing the drink in the sequence involves cleaning any messes created by said drink.
i also never keep any milks on bar, id rather do 100 squats than accidentally knock something over yknow
Electrical_Metal_1064 points7m ago
I especially hate it when I’m on window and they hand me a drink that is wet on the bottom from the dirty counters and dripping out of the top from the over pour. I should not have to wipe down or relid a drink before handing it out. This is part of the bar partner’s job-make the drink presentable! It’s not that hard to keep a tidy station. So infuriating! Thank you for this post-I needed to get that out.
frankenstein1054 points7m ago
when there’s a half full pitcher of milk on the counter and a bunch of open sugar packets and milk/water/syrup sludge all over the counter and old milk on the steam wand when it takes a millisecond to just, at the very least, wipe the steam wand .
frankenstein1052 points7m ago
idk how ppl operate in that mess, I’m clumsy and spill stuff everywhere but clean as I go; ppl can wait if it means their stuff is all clean and sanitary… plus I’m clumsy, with a bunch of milks and random steam pitchers of old milks and just cups, old empty whip cans, and syrup sludge everywhere I feel so crowded and end up dropping and spilling stuff even more 😵💫😵💫
stfuari3 points7m ago
thank you i was just talking abt this to one of my coworkers it bothers me so much
iStealSharpies3 points7m ago
The biggest flex is being fast *and* neat
BigDillLadyPickle2 points7m ago
I mean im one of those messy drink makers but I clean before I switch roles 😂 and once the rush is over
besoinducafe2 points7m ago
Keeping a steady pace instead of rushing ultimately makes business go faster too. The cleaner and more organized your station is, the more fluidly you can work. 🤙🏻💕
-Zispy2 points7m ago
I have... one specific partner who does this. Even when it's super slow, there is just a layer of milk over the entire counter. They are constantly leaving milks out and keep putting the ice scoop on the dirty counter and reuse it. I am always going behind their back and cleaning.. and yes, I have attempted to say things about it but I am not an assertive person.
_paperbackhead_2 points7m ago
Former partner here: completely agree however I used to be semi messy. I would never ever leave my mess for the next person to deal with though and always would try to clean in between unless we got slammed. Then I’d clean after it would slow down some. Editing to add: I’ve never left out milk the most that would happen would be the bar getting a bit over flowed from liquids or dealing with toppings
The_realest_jules2 points7m ago
I will make a mess on bar bc I’m speedy, but I always make sure to clean it up before switching. In addition, when I’m on Cs doing cleanup I try to reach in and wipe the bar down so that the baristas on bar don’t have to slow down.
cvpocoffee2 points7m ago
Same! Esp when they leave all the dairies out ahhhh and I hate an empty fridge so before I leave the station, I ask the SL if I have time to restock/ or tell whoever is CS.
bunnysbigcookie1 points7m ago
as a messy bar partner, i clean when i get the chance but i’m generally pretty fast. i also work mostly peak, so even when i feel like i’m going fast the shift still tells me to drop the times down a few more seconds. i do make sure my bar is clean before i switch out and my dishes are rinsed out as i go
Winter_Birthday_67611 points7m ago
Yes my biggest pet peeve omg
Thts-atiny11 points7m ago
Literally brought this up during my last store meeting bc I’m tired of it being my “responsibility” to clean up after baristas. CLEANING UP IS THE LAST PART OF MAKING YOUR DRINK
kakimike171 points7m ago
Not rinsing blenders <<<<
zambiers1 points7m ago
I always keep a clean dry rag on my bar cause I like a clean bar
haikusbot1 points7m ago
*I always keep a*

Good human.
zambiers1 points7m ago
Yes 😂😂
Busy_Wolf73711 points7m ago
There’s one partner who it always looks like a full blown warzone. Like syrups everywhere. Milk everywhere. I don’t think she ever wipes down the bar….
captainsasss1 points7m ago
If ur a messy bar ur not a good bar period.
Low_Committee_13121 points7m ago
I always clean before I switch roles but if I’m on bar it’s gonna be a little messy lol. Like I’ll wipe things down if I have time to between drink orders but yeah
Renyx1 points7m ago
Me cleaning up my coworkers' ice everywhere all the time T-T
Also close the goddamn ice bins when you're done getting ice!
