Help? Need some advice (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sadwhip_69
So my store was/is currently hiring for shift supervisors 5 to be exact, and I had expressed to management that I was interested in promoting to ssv. So they gave me a list of questions to practice with before my interview. My manager told me we’d go through them together and have a mock interview. (We didn’t btw) My management had been having a tough time scheduling my interview, but at some point my asm was able to schedule it. I felt a really underprepared but still had the interview. The next time I saw my manager I told her how it went and apparently she didn’t even know that I had the interview till I told her. She actually declined me the position, because of my “maturity level”. (This was in early October) Now, my store has been losing a lot of partners lately (specifically night partners) because of some drama that’s been going on and we currently only have 1 night ssv. So I work mostly nights and I work a solid 34 hours a week, I’ve been a partner for a year and 3 months now. So remember when I said my store was hiring for 5 ssv? I just found out 3 of my current partners that applied have gotten the position. Of the 3 of them that applied, I have never seen them do freezer pulls, foh/boh counts, department counts, or run the shift. Just this past week I’ve run the shift, along with the inventory count, freezer pull, 4 times already. I guess i feel taken advantage of, most partners i work with have asked me each day if I’ve promoted because I’m taking care of all those responsibilities. I don’t want to sound entitled but i firmly believe I’ve earned that ssv position. Is it okay for my manager to have me keep doing these things ? I’ve been thinking about talking to my DM, but I don’t know. Help please

pulls, counts, running a shift, are not responsibilities of baristas. you’re being taken advantage of and can absolutely tell them you won’t be doing them anymore unless you get promoted. its not your job to do ssv things without ssv pay.

but also the baristas being promoted to ssv having never done the pull or counts doesn’t take away their ability to become ssvs. because again its not a baristas job.

Thank you!! It’s not like I don’t enjoy the extra responsibility but again it’s not having the title with the extra responsibility that gets me

Running the shift isn’t your job. Pulls and counts can be done by baristas. It rarely happens but nothing says it can’t.

You're doing SSV work without the title/pay. That's why your SM won't promote you. Why bother? You're already doing the work for free.

Having earned it means nothing at the siren.

Honestly, more often than not, if you make your case again, the SM will string you along, getting you to keep hustling, but never actually promote you. I've seen it so many times at Starbucks.

My advice: cut your losses. Stick to your duties; you aren't responsible for SSV duties. You probably won't get a transfer approval from this SM either. You could wait it out and maybe get lucky with a more appreciative SM soon.

My advice: Cut your losses. This SM has passed you over several times; they aren't going to promote you. Stick to your duties; you aren't responsible for SSV duties.
