Pet peeves (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Mulberry490
As a barista name your most annoying pet peeves about customers
irishdancer89 140 points 7m ago
When people stand at the hand off to put cream and sugar into their coffee and then just leave their trash right on the counter. So rude!
imvni5 40 points 7m ago
Or when they put their trash in the tip jar….that have tips in it
dontcry2022 3 points 7m ago
damn y'all have some rude customers :/ some things i guess i have yet to witness
[deleted] 1 points 7m ago
[deleted]
Muted_Obligation4501 2 points 7m ago
I’ve seen them put it in my bars spoon container, like you really see clean dishes and put trash in it? 🤨 they be stupid on purpose I swear
PrestigiousLong3023 132 points 7m ago
When I hand out someone’s drink and they immediately tell me that they’re waiting on food/vice versa. Some people don’t know any better and that’s fine but most people are so rude about it!! Like, I am clearly not handling the food orders if I’m making drinks

Also, when I’m on solo drive through and I have to tell someone at the order box that I’ll be with them in just a moment while I’m dealing with someone at the window, and they ignore me and just start ordering. Like, seriously??? Some people clearly don’t listen to us at all
Mulberry490 [OP] 35 points 7m ago
It’s actually mad how similar customer service people have in Starbucks like every customer is the same! Also the first bit you said like when they say aswell erm I’ve got 2 drink I’m like ye well I’ve only got 1 pair of hands haha

Also that is very annoying I just tell them that I’ll be with them again to piss then off 🤣

Also when you repeat there order back to them and they say ye and get to the window and go I didn’t order that absolutely wet wipes 🧻
Ordinary-Theory-8289 26 points 7m ago
When they just start ordering I just completely ignore them. Then when I’m ready I’m like “thank you so much for your patience! What can I get started for you today?”
myrabruneta 6 points 7m ago
This is the way! Lol

I love having a sweet voice saying "thanks for waiting and being SOO patient! How can I help you??" ... after hearing them finish their entire order when I told them to wait.

This is why I think I'm a bit evil.
Ordinary-Theory-8289 5 points 7m ago
If someone orders 2 snowman cookies I like to imagine it’s for a pair of young siblings, so I give them 1 of each color and hope that they fight over who gets which 😂 so I’m definitely a bit evil
myrabruneta 1 points 7m ago
Hahhahaa man I don't have a single original moment huh 🤣
liaminnesotan 1 points 7m ago
I do this too!!!!!
djdementia 15 points 7m ago
I got mixed feelings about this - I mean Starbucks is like the only place I've ever been to that calls out your order one item at a time. It's just not normal for any other business.

It'd be pretty weird if you went to McDonalds and they called out each item individually as it's made.

It's Starbucks that's *in the wrong here* so we should totally give our customers that aren't regulars some extra patience. I find simply replying "Oh here we will call out each item as it's ready, I'll call out your name as soon as it's ready!".
PrestigiousLong3023 10 points 7m ago
Oh definitely! I used to be a manager at a similar type of business where we had a few atypical ways of doing things-customers were often confused so I spent a lot of time thinking about how things look from their perspective and how I could make things easier/more clear to them. In turn I have a lot of patience for people who are asking questions/confused about how things work! Like I said, some people don’t know and that’s fine, I’m happy to let them know that their food is coming right out/that my coworker will be bringing it down in just a moment for them! However I do not have patience for those who are excessively rude and angry with me. We all deserve a little respect/kindness! :)
djdementia 3 points 7m ago
Yeah for sure! I only get annoyed if the person won't back away from the counter when I've asked them to.
Erbearlee 3 points 7m ago
Yesterday I was solo drive and had this happen. I told them I would be with them in a second and then I helped the window. The girl immediately ordered two fraps. The person on drive bar heard the order and typed it in for me, but my petty ass self then restarted with “Thanks so much for your patience, what can I get for you?”

I immediately had to turn off the mike because my bar partner was in tears she was laughing so hard. It was great
SnooChipmunks4661 94 points 7m ago
When I turn away for a second at the window and I hear ‘Straw?!’ Like hold on a second? I’m still giving you stuff.
PotatoLaBelle 34 points 7m ago
Omg yes this one. Or when doing dto and dtr, you hand out one drink, start putting a sleeve on their next one right there, and they *immediately* go “I have another drink?!” I just look at them, hold it up, and smile while putting the sleeve on, then give em the kindest “I gotchu, I didn’t forget!” Like, please remember I’m not a vending machine. I can only do this at the speed of one human with two hands lol
mrcupcake18 9 points 7m ago
Adding more to this! When you have the dt window open and they ACTIVELY watch you put all their drinks in a drink carrier and when you hand it to them they go “oh I don’t need a drink carrier” tf? Why didn’t you say anything while you were actively watching me?!
imvni5 2 points 7m ago
Thisssss. I absolutely hate when I’m handing out two drinks, one in each hand and they’re like “what about my pup cups…”Like sure let me just extend out my extra arms and hand those to you while I’m already hanging out the window with your 2 drinks
dontcry2022 0 points 7m ago
Ok but also one of my biggest pet peeves ever with going through drive-thrus is when my straw, my plasticware, or my condiments are left out and I drive off all trusting that the window person did put them in the bag, only to find out when I get home they didn't

So totally get your point of view but also understand the urgency of the customer as someone who now automatically gets a little anxiously triggered when I am not given it w/ my drink

People can def chill tho <3 lol
Independent-Pop-4416 1 points 7m ago
Not sure where you’re located but I’m in Cali and we’ve been instructed to not automatically give out utensils and straws customers have to ask for them it’s the “law” a way around this for me is I ask the customer if they want all that stuff since I know most customers do want it but im an experienced partner not everyone knows this or some partners are also confused with the law so all they know is customers have to ask for utensils and straws.
chainsofgold 80 points 7m ago
when people change their order right after i ring them through and now i have to tell the bar what’s going on

customers who get angry when i ask them clarifying questions

“i need … ” or customers who just bark their order at you: “tall caramel macchiato.” customers who don’t say thank you like use basic manners for gods sake.

asking for water at the bar

customers who argue with me over health code standards
littleorphananney 23 points 7m ago
Lol I will straight up send people back to reg if they asked for water at bar with NO shame. Don’t fuck w my rhythm by asking for 5 grande waters no ice while I’m making another triple nonfat latte no foam etc 🥲
Traditional-Emu-1403 58 points 7m ago
When they stare are me from the bar. This isn’t hibachi, take your kid to a table and wait for their milkshake patiently
Mr-Yoop 54 points 7m ago
“I need a…” no you don’t. You don’t NEED a $6 coffee. Use your manners.
Nyxxiiaa 24 points 7m ago
The only thing worse is “Give me a…” like who raised you???
Responsible_Snow7109 3 points 7m ago
Oh yea lol I work at a cafe store and there have been several snobby type of guys that would come in sometimes and I would greet them and be like hello how are you and then right away they'll just be like "yea lemme get aaaa...."
djdementia 44 points 7m ago
OK so twice this has happened to me:

Customer shows me their phone with a text message drink order. I type in the order confirm with them and then they pay.

* 10 minutes later "Where is my **last drink**? I got the other drinks a while ago.

**me:** What was the other drink?

**cust:** I **showed you my phone!!!** You read it off!! Look it's right here!!!

**me:** now reads the entire conversation and realized that I was supposed to read multiple text messages not just the "last one".

**me:** I'm sorry!! I didn't realize there were multiple orders there

**cust:** Extremely rude and pissed off about having to pay again and wait for the other drink.

-----

Like sheesh! I'm not going to read your entire phone conversation unless you specifically ask me to.
sweetpeachtae 41 points 7m ago
if you have an order with more than three drinks and i have to ask you what size and if it’s hot or iced EACH TIME… what the hell lmfao
devvobruh 34 points 7m ago
when i tell someone i’m checking to see if they have the food they want and they just pull around anyway. also if someone just doesn’t go to the order box for their mobile and just pulls up to the window randomly
Ok-Description4413 9 points 7m ago
My favorite is when they literally pull up to the box, you say Hi and they order super fast and then pull around. Don’t even wait for you to clarify or get a name or tell them the total. It’s always
“Hi what can I get for you?”

“Medium skinny vanilla latte” *

“Can I get a-“

VROOOM*

Okayyyy cool.
PotatoLaBelle 28 points 7m ago
Me: Good morning, what can I get started for you?

Person in the passenger seat: ꜀ₐₙ…ₐᵥₑ ₐ…ᵥₐₙᵢₗ…ₜᵣₐ ᵢ꜀ₑ…

Like, if the driver doesn’t speak English or something, I get it, but if it’s just that the driver refuses to sound out words they don’t know or think they’re too cool to say “caramel ribbon crunch,” they need to get over it or you need to lean over and shout because none of us can hear you.
NationalAirline2462 28 points 7m ago
literally just when I ask mfs how they're doing and they ignore me entirely and just start ordering like what's so hard ab treating baristas like humans
aspiringgrandpa 25 points 7m ago
THE STARING. like hello did your mother never teach you it’s rude to stare???
Final-Ad-5856 2 points 7m ago
One lady fell asleep once with her face pressed to the glass in front of my bar cause she was staring for too long

customers mobile ordering and then coming through the drive thru 2 minutes later to pick their order up. 😍
mimitalu 12 points 7m ago
My fave is when they put in a mobile at the box 💕🙄
HarleyLeMay 5 points 7m ago
But don’t you just love it when they drive straight past the speaker box bc “well, I mobile ordered. Why should I have to stop at the box?” Gah, my absolute FAVORITE.
ItzNevarMe 2 points 7m ago
I've started trolling people, so when they do this I literally hold their ticket in my hand and pretend we don't have it and ask them to check the location, then remind them it takes a few minutes so the stickers may not have gone through yet (even though they did and it's in my hand) then play dumb and act like it just printed and remind them it's "usually about ten minutes so just remember that for the future, but we've got you this time!" Buys so much times and is so harmless and makes my coworkers laugh
cora388 19 points 7m ago
calling out people’s orders and immediately being asked “is this the ___?” ma’am i just called out what it was
Responsible_Snow7109 4 points 7m ago
Always happens at my store. But the worst was the other day. There were 2 ladies waiting in store by the hand off area. I make a grande peppermint mocha with whole milk. Put it on the hand off counter and say "grande peppermint mocha with whole milk!" And the 2 ladies start talking to eachother and look at the cup cuz i guess theyre trying to figure out whos it is and what it says on the sticker. Well then i hear one of them say to the other the word "whole milk". Then they ask me what milk its made with. Lmao like wtf u guys just read the sticker and one of u even audibly stated it to the other person. So now both of u kno its made with whole milk.
PotatoLaBelle 18 points 7m ago
“Can, I, have…a, five pump, double shot, toasted vanilla, soy, blonde, no whip…” WHAT IS THE SIZE, TEMPERATURE, AND NAME OF THE DRINK, PLEASE. You’ve spent 15 seconds telling me every modification and I’ve entered none of it because I don’t want to assume it’s a latte and then the last words you say are like “matcha frap.”
jillybrews226 3 points 7m ago
Imagine this but before they changed the computer system and when we used to write on the cups. I wouldn’t even know which cup to start writing on. At least now you can start ringing in modifiers without selecting a drink.
Asthmalord91666 17 points 7m ago
“Extra caramel” on drinks that don’t have caramel to begin with
dontcry2022 5 points 7m ago
This is a pet peeve of mine bc do you want the syrup or the drizzle????
Asthmalord91666 2 points 7m ago
Omg yes
loki8675309 16 points 7m ago
People shoving their phone in my face. JUST READ YOUR OWN SCREEN TO ME. Because they always pull their phone BACK before I’m actually done ringing in the drink.
I had someone order a “Barbie drink” and I was like “o.o that is not a drink we have”. She shoved the phone in my face and it said to ask for a “vanilla cream”. And the screenshot had a cold cup in it. But if you’re gonna make me read it, I’m not gonna ask clarifying questions. You get whatever your screen says.
dontcry2022 2 points 7m ago
This is another one i've yet to experience and hope i don't ever

The customers who have shown me their phone have at least given me a heads up they want to show me a recipe lol which IMO is so polite and I appreciate them doing that so much lol. And in general sometimes its loud in store and so seeing the recipe is actually preferable
tantelope 13 points 7m ago
when they have their window rolled up at the box and ignore you, and the second they roll down the window they yell “hello??” like yeah babe i’ve been talking to you for 3 minutes if you’d roll your window down
Ok-Description4413 13 points 7m ago
PEOPLE WHO DONT TALK INTO THE SPEAKER BOX!! And then get mad when I can’t hear their order. I swear people will have their hand in front of their mouth, be talking down into their lap, ordering from the passenger side and not even speaking up. It’s so fucking annoying. I don’t need you to scream, I just need you to talk OUT OF THE WINDOW AT A NORMAL VOLUME. Otherwise I will have to ask for clarification for EVERY THING YOU SAY.

On the opposite side, people who yell in my ear. The mic works great if you use it right. Pls do not scream at me. EVEN if I ask for clarification, that doesn’t mean I need you to scream, that means I missed something. Literally why is just talking to a speaker box SO HARD FOR PEOPLE?
jjd_yo 12 points 7m ago
I want to preface this by saying it's usually not their fault, but customers who received a wrong drive-through drink and come immediately start telling me on Bar 2/Cafe/Mobile Bar about how it was wrong (usually during peak and 10m behind on mobiles).

And those people who are overly dramatic about how much cream goes into their coffee. Being specific is fine, but giving me a death stare while pouring half n half seems a bit silly.
LordRBolton 11 points 7m ago
When someone is waiting for like 10 mins and they search for their card or count cash at the window
mars-needsmilfs 10 points 7m ago
when i’m on bar, very clearly making drinks, and people just start ordering with me. when have you ever walked past a register at a restaurant and ordered with the kitchen staff???
KittenKweenX 10 points 7m ago
When someone other than the driver is ordering in the drive-thru! Like I literally can’t hear the passenger and definitely not from the back seat. Also the driver shouldn’t be that embarrassed to order other passengers drinks, it’s just a drink dude.
borrowedurmumsvcard 9 points 7m ago
“I got something last time, caramel something with stuff on top…”

“the caramel brûlée latte?”

“YES!”

“okay here you go”

“oh this isn’t what I wanted, I wanted the caramel ribbon frappuccino… the cold blended one”
caspi3 8 points 7m ago
When they place a mobile order at the speaker and get mad if it’s not immediately ready when they pull up
[deleted] 8 points 7m ago
[deleted]
jungyihyun 18 points 7m ago
i mean this in the nicest way possible but like..what else are they supposed to say 😭”I need” irritates me but like i don’t really understand the issue with “can i get” (it’s better if they say please but of course not many people do that)
Ordinary-Theory-8289 11 points 7m ago
Yeah this is a weird one lol. What do they want them to say, “Please sir It would be greatly appreciated if you could kindly make me a caramel macchiato”
HarleyLeMay 1 points 7m ago
I think this runs more along the lines of grammar. The word “can” indicates asking for permission, however if you were to say “may I…” it indicates asking to get/do something. All I really think of is my mom saying “well, I don’t know, CAN you?” whenever I would ask using the word can.
PotatoLaBelle 4 points 7m ago
Yeah, “can I get a” is preferable when the alternatives are “gimme a,” “I need a,” or just shouting the name of a drink lol
Erbearlee 2 points 7m ago
I once got a “you can make me…”

It did not end well
mars-needsmilfs 7 points 7m ago
*ding-“HELLO??? HELOOOO? IS ANYONE THERE”
insanityizgood13 6 points 7m ago
Asking for water & ice at the bar when we're in the middle of peak.
dontgiveah00t 6 points 7m ago
Not rolling down the window all the way when ordering OR when I’m handing them a tray of drinks through the drive through.

Hand in front of their mouth when ordering so I can’t hear. Passenger or back seat ordering and I can’t hear.

Adding on drinks at the window.
candidinsanity 5 points 7m ago
when someone goes directly from the register to handoff, and i call out a drink and they go “is this mine?” is your name ___? “no” then no

like u just ordered, hold on 🙃
cocoabutterkissez 4 points 7m ago
when people ask for a stopper and just stand there expecting me to put it on their drink.

people who get angry because theyre not speaking loud enough and I cant hear them

we have a customer who places her mobile order and it’s usually 2 drinks and some food items and comes thru our DT the second she places it

THE PASSENGER ORDERING AND THR DRIVER MAKES NO EFFORT TO EVEN SAY ANYTHING
Lesbeanteacherlifts 4 points 7m ago
Customers that say that’s it for the order then proceed to add 5+ things to the order after they say that
0nlyreason 4 points 7m ago
When customers are on the phone while they’re ordering- someone they won’t even notice when they’re first in line, or they’ll mouth their orders… I’m sorry but I do not read lips! And then they act like I’M interrupting when I’m asking if they want it hot or iced, the name for the order, etc
imvni5 4 points 7m ago
Customers who angrily askwhy we can’t “just go to the store” and buy x product we’re out of
dontcry2022 2 points 7m ago
OMG one customer at my store asked if we wanted HIM to go to the store and get us either milk or creamer, can't remember which. And it wasn't said in a friendly way, it was said in a "geez you don't even have X? do you need me to go get it?" kind of way
irishdancer89 4 points 7m ago
Also hate when people ask me when their order is going to be ready when I’m on bar clearly working on making drinks. Mind you I work at one of the top stores in the company so we’re ALWAYS busy. People will be asking this on a Saturday after waiting like two minutes. I’m always like, um it’s gonna be a bit 😅
No-Needleworker-4070 4 points 7m ago
when a customer shoves their phone right in your face to scan their rewards app before I’ve even finished writing the drink code or putting the order into the machine 🙄🙄
[deleted] 4 points 7m ago
When customer at driver through before I even greet you start your order

Or when they say they need min and I said okay tell me when your ready then they just start ordering
Final-Ad-5856 3 points 7m ago
“Can I get a grande blonde with nonfat, light whip, 2 pumps caramel, 7 pumps white mocha, caramel drizzle…etc”
Blonde what… brewed coffee? Latte? Americano? I can’t even begin to process your modifications until I know what the base drink is and then they think I’m the stupid one cause clearly they wanted a shaken espresso and I can read minds. Obviously.
jadendigitalart 3 points 7m ago
Working on multi drink order - handing off the first drink and then the customer says “WHERES THE OTHER DRINK?!” Like bro, I’m working on it. I’m not a robot.
Muted_Obligation4501 3 points 7m ago
When they ask me to watch their stuff when I’m busy on bar…like if a crackhead comes in and takes your stuff I’m not doing anything about it lmaooooo
nelzay 3 points 7m ago
Drive thru.

“anything else?”
*customer drives away*
“ok that’s a no..”
chicken-tiddies 2 points 7m ago
Driving off when we're telling the total , getting to the window, and berating us for not telling them the total. ._.
Asian_Emily 3 points 7m ago
I’ve got two main ones. The first one being customers grabbing over my hand to grab their drinks out the window. Instead f grabbing the rest of the empty cup I’ve left for them to grab. Or when people don’t take shakers and milk pitchers off the rinsers.
mymelodywithaglock 2 points 7m ago
-asking if we’re open in either; the middle of the day or 5 minutes before we close. Like, yeah i fucking guess we are! lmfao

-Not saying the size first. Like how do you not know how much you want

-Not letting us know if it’s a big order and me having to ask “anything else?” 5 more times than i need to

-People who wait for their drink on the opposite side of the hand off counter, often in the way of the line causing confusion

-Staring. Just staring. I know you have coffee questions, ask away! I will answer <3 But do not ask me for xyz while i’m in the middle of making something.

-Not saying thank you. What happened to basic manners? Makes me feel like i did a bad job
-Asking for water/ice while i’m at the rinse sink.

Just to name a few 😀
GhostfaceJK 2 points 7m ago
reaching behind the counter to grab stuff. i don’t understand it. is it not common sense to not do that? to not reach for something that’s in an area that’s obviously off limits to customers ???

or when there’s like one customer and they wait till after i finish making their drink to ask for some kind of modification like making it extra hot or warm when i’ve already put the lid on.

and ofc. the group customers who somehow all come in five minutes before we close.
nelzay 2 points 7m ago
Drive thru again (literally happened to me yesterday).

Customer has a phone call on loud in her car while ordering. I repeat the order back to her and she confirms it with a “YEAAHH!”. Gets round to the window and guess what… she says it’s not what she ordered..
Maddyc0709 2 points 7m ago
When I ask someone in drive thru if they would like anything else and they just stare forward until you ask again and then say “that’s all” in an annoyed tone. I asked you a question, you’re supposed to respond lol
Defiant_Difference14 1 points 7m ago
when i’m on bar and someone asks me where their food item is when the ovens are on the other side of the floor…like i’m obviously not the one with tongs in my hands why would i have any idea about your food :/
chicken-tiddies 1 points 7m ago
Facing away from the speaker when they're ordering/ordering with the window rolled up, and then getting upset when I can't hear you.
diarrheajar 1 points 7m ago
We don’t leave cream or sugar in the lobby anymore since Covid, and people reach over the counter onto our side and grab the cream😵‍💫😑
SortaSketchyNDed 1 points 7m ago
The staring followed by “is it ready yet?” Not even two minutes after they ordered. Bonus for if they order during a rush and ask early in hopes of getting their stupid drink earlier than others. No Todd fuck off. Your Macchiato will be ready when it’s ready. Don’t try and make others who ordered first wait longer. Don’t get Starbucks if you’re in such a hurry that everyone else needs to bow down to you
Ahswera 1 points 7m ago
When they place a mobile order while sitting in drive through ☺️
pointetpointe 1 points 7m ago
Customers placing mobile orders while they’re already in the drive-thru line
ShaneStone9119 1 points 7m ago
when people put their Splenda wrappers in our tip jar —- not even reading “we appreciate tips :)” ….
frogwater_69 1 points 7m ago
when i’m in drive and people take the card machine out of my hand just to tap it and hand it right back??? WHY CANT I HOLD IT SIR PLEASE !!!!
shhucks 1 points 7m ago
When I asked what I can start for them and the customers say "I need a caramel macchiato"

First off, Brenda, no you don't NEED anything.
Secondly, what size and is it iced or hot?
littlekatie3 1 points 7m ago
When they want syrup pumps in their pike place, and when their drink is tiktok inspired.
AND they rarely say thank you or hello.
