new ssv availability requirements ??(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Academic_Action5584
yesterday we had shift meeting (after nearly a month, because we didn't have the non-coverage hours to schedule meetings) and we were told that shifts were about to be required to be available for at least 10 shifts a week, 2 day parts, and one weekend day. as well as that, our store may be in the works to have an opening/closing shift and do away with mids as our hours are changing (5a-9p, instead of 4:30a-9:30p).
one of the other shifts argued that this was essentially asking us to have open availability and wasn't fair to some of our shifts who have kids/other jobs/outside lives/etc. which i completely agree with.
anyway. my question is if anyone else has heard of this new requirement ? i've only been in the ssv position since may (partner since september of '21) so there's lots of things i'm not completely knowledgeable on. TIA !

Technically shifts have always been expected to know how/be able to open and close and be available on a weekend day. Many managers didn’t make this a requirement to promote but I guess the business needs for your store are changing.

our needs are for sure changing. we recently got a new manager who is an external hire, been with starbucks for maybe 7 months now. while he's been employed i was taken in as a transfer but became the store's 7th ssv, so now we're all getting scheduled 10-13 hours since our SM overstaffed us extremely (and put us over labor by 17+ hours one week recently)
that's good to know though!! i've always had open availability since i've had the privilege to be able to work whenever needed. i've just never heard of these terms until now

It sounds like your SM realized he has too many SSVs and is trying to encourage someone to step down.

I had to leave because our DM decided we all had to have fully open availability Friday through Sunday to stay in position, so I wish I were in your shows, lol.

Oh heck no. My availability is 4a -2p Monday-Sunday. They need me to open, and if that’s the case that’s all I’m doing or my sleep is just not okay

Yeah, I just couldn’t have my weekend completely open again after the last time I did that- I was schedule to close every weekend, Friday-Sunday, for weeks. No other store I’ve worked at required it, but I decided it was the universe telling me it was time to go.

There’s a formula somewhere about how many hours shifts need to be available in relation to the stores hours of operations, and it’s a lot more than most of the shifts I know are available. I think managers have become pretty lax on availability of ssvs and it doesn’t surprise me that the company is trying to move back to standard on it.

Like the other commenter said, it’s kind of expected that shifts are able to open and close/work saturday or sunday, even if you are an exclusive opener, you are expected to know how to close and will probably have to do it at some point and vice versa.

that does make sense. usually i work exclusively closes/mids just because i was never properly trained on how to open as a shift 🥲🤙 something we're all working on thankfully though
