are any other baristas frequently let off their shift past their scheduled clock out time? i’m almost always staying over ~5 minutes past my shift even when i give a heads up that my shift is almost over. (self.starbucksbaristas)

oh wow when i used to close (9:30) we wouldn’t get out until 11 something because we are so understaffed that we can’t get any pre closing or even break down done. needless to say i stopped closing lol
Queasy_Judge2405 4 points 7m ago
yeah my store was that way for a while…. the only way we fixed it was to keep pestering mids to stock throughout the day and to have SSVs telling all day parts to stay on task.
thespiritaco 7 points 7m ago
Is it normal for you to get out late at your store when closing? I am a closer and we get out like 15 min early. We close at 10 usually get out at 10:15, ive never stayed later than 10:30 which is our scheduled time. Its so weird to me that at other stores closers get out late.
Chaos_but_not_quite 10 points 7m ago
You close at 10? that's probably why. my store closes at 9 and we're open the latest in the area. I assume it's because it's not very busy the last few hours where as people who are only open till 6,7, or 8 have less time because they're busy with customers and can't get ahead on closing tasks.
Imaginary-One-6599 3 points 7m ago
The store I work at closes at 5
aspen_fae 2 points 7m ago
my store closes at 7, and most days we're out by 7:05 or 7:10
Formal-Ad2863 1 points 7m ago
with absolutely no disrespect, your key holder needs to be starting breakdown earlier and be doing the smaller tasks of breakdown throughout the night. we close at 10 and if we know it’s going to be a busy night, we will start breakdown around 3.
mxs4235 1 points 7m ago
There was a time where I was the primary closer and say I was scheduled 34 hours, guaranteed I’d actually be working 36. Always out late regardless of how much I busted my ass or if I skipped my last 15 with the hopes of getting out semi-on time. 😭
5AV1OR 77 points 7m ago
You don’t have to stay past your scheduled time if you don’t want too I would just let the shift on know that you have to leave right when your shift is over.
plaidflannelgirl [OP] 35 points 7m ago
i do by giving them a heads up that my shift will be ending and i will be needing to leave. i never have someone to cover the spot i’m in (bar, DTW, DTO) at the time that i need to be off and i obviously can’t just leave my spot and clock out. so i always end up having someone come to take over my spot after my shift has been over.
StoppedBucket 48 points 7m ago
As a SSV I will say that sometimes it depends on the person coming in after you. If they show up right at the time they are scheduled, they typically aren’t ready to be on the floor right when you leave, which makes you have to stay later so they can take over for you/move the floor around after they get on. If it happens that frequently though I would see if you could talk to your SM about it

StoppedBucket 9 points 7m ago
Oh that that’s a completely different issue unfortunately. I’d still try to bring it up with your manager! If people are constantly staying late then that messes with scheduling and going over on hours, which should hopefully lead to a talk with that ssv so that they can learn to manage their time better. I’d take some other advice from this too, simply tell your shift “it’s time for me to leave, I’m clocking out” and I feel that they’ll eventually learn to NOT keep people late
Toomanyboringpeople 7 points 7m ago
Are your SSVs approachable? I would talk to them before your SM and ask them what’s going on and let them know you can’t stay 5 minutes after. Then if it continues take it to your SM
imathrowayslc 5 points 7m ago
Yes but while that’s important my shift is still over and I need to leave. I come on time. That’s what Starbucks expects of me and if I don’t they will fire me. I also leave on time. If I’m asked and can stay I sometimes do but most days I have to be somewhere and another barista being late is not something I am responsible for nor being paid to resolve.
StoppedBucket 5 points 7m ago
And I completely get that too! I just recently became a ssv and that’s just another perspective on the situation. In no way should baristas feel obligated to stay later than they are scheduled and ultimately it is up to the ssv to handle the transitions when a partner is scheduled to go out whether or not the person taking over for them (if there even is one) is on time or not
bellamythos 5 points 7m ago
we just talked about this at our last ssv huddle! obviously it’s not everyone or even a majority, but some of our baristas wait until the minute they’re scheduled to clock in, then take their sweet time putting on their apron, doing their symptom check, washing their hands - totally unfair to the person who’s off that same minute.
MarkedByFerocity 9 points 7m ago
I definitely understand your point of view, but I'm not sure it's fair to expect baristas to arrive early. Or to expect them to do those pre-work preparations so urgently. It would be so easy for the company/manager to better accommodate shift changes by providing a 5-10 minute overlap between the baristas' shifts. The current system is unfair, but I don't think the baristas are the ones who are causing it to be unfair.
5AV1OR 5 points 7m ago
I get that but what I’m saying is too my knowledge you do not by any means have to stay past at all so if it’s important you leave on time you can just say “My shift is over so I’m clocking out” and do that. It’s on them to figure it out. As an SSV yes it’s nice of people can stay a few minutes if I need them too but it’s not a requirement at all I’ll figure it out either way

Queerguy24 2 points 7m ago
Okay I was honestly told that our shifts need two baristas on the clock and need to stay until they are done with their tasks.
Kit-Kat_23 29 points 7m ago
Same I’m a closer and consistently get let out at 10. (30 mins after my shift ends) 🙄

granted we are a high volume store and are usually busy during the times i’m scheduled off, but i feel like a 5-10 mins heads up is enough time to have someone over to cover my position and let me clock out.
Chromosomes23 6 points 7m ago
As a SSV thats more than enough time, I’ve had barista be like im suppose to be leaving in like go clock out I’ll figure it out usually it’s me doing 2 positions for 5mins 😂

Staffing is hard right now with how many cuts are being thrown at SMs who usually have no say in the matter, so I usually try not to take it harshly especially if I can see the shift is losing their marbles, Lol.

On the other hand if you are consistently getting let out late even after letting them know, that’s just disrespect from the shift and I would have a 1 on 1 with them. Maybe they are aware, maybe they aren’t.

Always try to talk it out, but don’t let others disrespect YOUR time!
witcheselementality 6 points 7m ago
Yes, but also I'm the kind of person that really wants the next team to be a ready for their shift as I can make them, so I will usually stay 5 or 10 minutes getting them caught up on CS. But that's just me, and you definitely don't need to stay past your time
dnims24 6 points 7m ago
This happens to me quite frequently lately. I let my shift know that I’ll be off in x amount of minutes and ask if they want anything from me and they usually say no. Then when I go to leave/double check they’re like oh wait can you actually do this real quick? It usually only takes like 10 mins tops but it’s frustrating af

Yes this happens to me often and one of the reasons I roll my eyes when the frequent closers v openers debate comes up and closers complain about staying late making the presumption that others often stay late too. I understand it’s my right to say it’s my time to clock out and leave, but I also respect my coworkers and am not going to walk away leaving a hole in the play during those times that timing doesn’t work out right and I’m needed to stay a few extra minutes.

I mean if you are closing you can’t really expect to leave “on time.” Some nights we get out on time but if it’s been a rough day or call outs that will usually put us behind. Latest we’ve gotten out is an hour after scheduled time.
cvpocoffee 5 points 7m ago
It happens allllllllll the time tho on some days I don’t mind staying a bit. I give them a head’s up and ask who will be taking my spot at the end of my shift and then I ask them again couple of seconds before my time is up (I refer to the DT screen clock as it shows the count per second) and ask again if I’m good to go. It usually sends the message that I wanna leave on the dot and if the person relieving me isn’t there yet, they jump on my position til whoever should be there gets on.
Alternative-Put4708 5 points 7m ago
Sometimes it takes your on coming barista who is to take over for you 1-3 mins to clock in and be ready to work so maybe ask your other partners to show up and be ready to work at their scheduled time so you can leave right on time that’s usually the issue we encounter
ifonlyuflew 4 points 7m ago
To me, you just kinda sound like you're complaining.. Getting out 5 minutes or a little more is just how food and beverage is.

If you were really bothered you could just talk to your SM or to the ssv you work with and tell them it's bothering you. Instead of complaining on a platform where most people probably do stay 5 minutes or more past there scheduled leave time.

It's food and bev for you, that's how it be.

Yeah, in a week, I stay almost 2 extra hours than I am scheduled.
sparkleblarkle 3 points 7m ago
I’ve been made to go on huge trash runs after telling an ssv that my shift ended 5 minutes ago and asking if I’m good to leave. It’s frustrating. I don’t think I’ve ever been let out on time
feisty314 4 points 7m ago
"I'm sorry, it's already past my scheduled time off, and I have other obligations today."

And then if you're feeling nice, you could offer to maybe do one trash can or one trip to the dumpster, but if it's already past your time, it's already past your time.

As a supervisor I always do my best to get people out on time, but depending on the time of day and how busy it is, it’s just not always possible. If someone tells me they really have to be out on time that day, I’ll hold someone’s break if I have to. Now when I say this, I’m saying it happens a few times a week, and it’s not the same person each time, and more times than not it’s because someone is late, or someone called out. If it bothers you this much, which is fair you have a life outside of work, tell your supervisor at the time you’re off you have to go. They need to be managing their time and this shouldn’t be happening basically everyday. If it’s a new supervisor, and you have a relationship, maybe try having a conversation and asking them how you can help prevent this. Five minutes in Starbucks time can really blow by. My motto is always ‘communication is key’.

I’d also like to say I’d appreciate some freaking clocks that aren’t tiny as shit. If my phones in the back charging, I frequently don’t know what time it is🤣
plaidflannelgirl [OP] 2 points 7m ago
i totally get that and i wouldn’t have a problem staying over most times if asked! however i feel like it’s kind of unfair to us baristas that some/most SSVs assume that we’re cool leaving after our scheduled shift is over unless we specifically state we need to leave at our scheduled time off.
spookbish69 3 points 7m ago
A girl who I used to work with would just clock out, not my favourite thing but it got the point through that she would not stay over unless asked
Kitabparast 2 points 7m ago
Depending on how busy we were and how we’re staffed, we can be out as little as 15 minutes after the store closes to as late as 30-45 minutes past the end of the shift.

As far as staying later, that’s an issue that involves you, your SSV, and your SM. In this era of cutting hours, our SM demanded that people leave on time. Or even before if possible. But then she told us SSVs that if we want to keep someone longer, we should ask her. Whenever I’ve asked her, she just said to use my best judgment. Although, there are certain partners she wants out on time no matter what.

Now, it’s also a culture thing. In my store, people tend to wait to be told they’re good to go. Some people, though, will leave as soon as the shift is over. “My shift’s over. Byeeeeeeeeeee!”
Enough_Raise_7167 2 points 7m ago
This just happened to me. I let my SSV know I had 5 minutes left before I was off and they gave me 15 minutes worth of things to do. I'm like, 👍🏼
breadstick_marinera 2 points 7m ago
Definitely got off late because of some shift managers. What was worse though was getting your break 2 hours late

Just leave, supervisor should fill your spot and switch plays if they’re doing their job right. There is no reason to stay longer than ur scheduled unless if you want to.
retsehassyla 1 points 7m ago
As a closing SSV…. I wish I could leave only 5 mins after my shift was over.

My poor closer and I (yes- it’s usually JUST 2 of us…) get out at least 30 mins after our shift ends every single time :( (Over an hour after we’ve closed)

Now I do work all of the truck/delivery shifts and weekends so they’re usually crazy shifts anyways… but it’s annoying especially when the closers are minors.
plaidflannelgirl [OP] 1 points 7m ago
i get it! i close twice a week and am always out 30 mins after or so. i was just talking about like regular open/midday shifts where it shouldn’t be a problem leaving at the scheduled time necessarily
WeirdGuyAlex 1 points 7m ago
Yeah, I close 5 nights a week and we regularly get out about 45 minutes late. For us it’s just because our openers and mids don’t get tasks done, so they get pushed onto us
Chemical_Currency_15 1 points 7m ago
Yeah I'm almost always at least 5 mins past. Sometimes more. And closing shifts we have gone 40 mins past closing on some days that we were just slammed all day and nothing is done by morning, mid or close until the doors are locked.
Imaginary-One-6599 1 points 7m ago
It used to happened to me, One time I stayed like an hour pasted my shift caused my shift manager just kept giving me a bunch of random things to do, they doesn’t work there anymore 😆

Its not always possible… if you have a problem with staying clocked in for an extra 5-10 mins to help YOUR TEAM out.. i think you might need a new job
plaidflannelgirl [OP] 1 points 7m ago
should work be my whole life? my TEAM is not my family and this is a job. bffr
