denied partner discount (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by iluvmoss
i just stopped by another starbucks in the area and tried to use and scan my partner numbers that i have attached to the app for the discount and the guy ringing me up asked for my id which i didn’t have on me and was caught off guard because i never have been asked for my id before when scanning it. he wouldn’t let me use my discount which was a little frustrating but i didn’t fight him on it but afterwards i looked it up and saw that if the partner numbers are attached to the app then id isn’t required. i know it isn’t that big of deal but this job is already running me dry and being denied the little benefit i have from it is frustrating.

The best thing for you to do is to call that store and inform the store manager so they can coach the partner on when someone doesn’t need to show ID to receive their discount. I’m sorry that happened to you.
ItzBoogieMan 50 points 7m ago
The ID is used to stop people from using their friends card/ husband or wife’s partner card. It’s not necessary but when a guy comes in and pulls up a screenshot with the name being “Kimberly” under the card, then I’m asking for an ID.
ashleyaliceeeee 88 points 7m ago
Yeah, but a man can come in who was named Kimberly previously. If they have the card, I’m not the one that gets in trouble. I’m going to give them the discount rather than potentially out someone.
mondrianna 75 points 7m ago
As a trans partner, THANK YOU.

ETA: Thank you, because being asked for my ID just to get my fucking discount is triggering as fuck and has only happened to me once. When I showed my ID, I had to clarify that I was trans which was really frustrating that this person was taking it upon themselves to police whether my discount use was legitimate (even though my name wasn’t even for a partner that worked at their location OR district!!). Like for real wtf is wrong with you if you’re going to be the fucking wannabe narc for a billion dollar corporation.
badbaristuh 17 points 7m ago
had an SM in my district ID me while I was a shift at a neighboring store. same situation occurred, and this was months after the policy had been changed to not require ID. long story short, I told my SM, who then escalated it to my DM and talked to the SM who originally ID’d me. I don’t think she ever ID’d another partner again. Still hate thinking about that experience though, why is a $5 coffee important enough to publicly humiliate a person over for some people? lol
HypnotizeCA 13 points 7m ago
For real!! I only got my legal name/ ID changed a few months ago. If somebody had the audacity to ID me over Starbucks I’d be so frustrated, I don’t understand why anybody feels the need to act like a club bouncer over some coffee
imathrowayslc 7 points 7m ago
Thank you. Showing ID is painful as hell. Also it doesn’t say the name that shows when I scan because unlike the state, Starbucks recognizes my real name.
Indica-daddy 6 points 7m ago
THIS! Thank you, from another trans partner.
ItzBoogieMan -9 points 7m ago
That’s why I said if he pulls out a screenshot.
ashleyaliceeeee 4 points 7m ago
I don’t even look at their phone when they scan. Our scanners are on the counter, but again, it’s the person who gave the screenshot away who would get in trouble, not you.

As someone who has risen through the ranks in a past life; I find self appointed notion that retail frontline employees need to protect company assets like this, really frustrating.

Unnecessary gatekeeping prevent positive and genuine shopping experiences much more often than actually deterring fraud. I implore anyone reading this to believe that if the problem of abuse gets out of hand; that your DM will surely protect the P&L that pays their car lease long before any real damage happens, or do a discount audit with P&AP if they suspect something shady AND local going on. A DM is way more likely to discipline a partner preventing shoplifting than one that “neglects” to keep a customer from stealing a cup by profiling excessively. It’s retail day one; never tackle shoplifters.

As the customer in line behind this purchase, trying to buy full price la Boulange freezer muffins on their own retail lunch break; you’ve now stolen my lunch break over principles that not even Starbucks or your soulless DM possess; and now I’m going to defend “Kimberly with a goatee” to the death until my gd muffin comes out piping hot from the TurboChef Tornado by your hand.

This is so true, but it's interesting to me because I feel like there is something about Starbucks as a company, specifically, that makes partners feel like they have to catch out every random custie who is trying to get their drink a lil cheaper.

I grew up poor and am a leftie. I feel very strongly that ""stealing"" from huge companies is absolutely a-ok if you need it. At my old job, I'd give people discounts left and right. If someone stole something, I'd turn a blind eye. Occasionally, I even give out things for free if I could tell the person was in a particularly rough spot. I did not give a fuck.

But there is something about Starbucks culture that made all of that totally switch for me. Suddenly I find myself irritated at the person who asks for oat milk in their latte after they already paid for a regular latte. Or the person who orders "a grande cup of water with 4 matcha powder and a splash of coconut milk.

I think it's because Starbucks attracts such an entitled customer base for one thing, so they're much harder to empathize with. But I also think there's just so much pressure to uphold standards in general and not be "the other Starbucks." And that attitude leaks into other, more minor things—like IDing someone over their fucking partner discount.
potterlyfe 3 points 7m ago
It's a hard thing for sure. I grew up swinging the pendulum of wealth because my parents have always been self employeed. Some years were feast, some were famine. But the one thing that was engrained in to me were strong hardworking ethics. One of those is to not steal. I could see/hear how that affects my parents businesses so of course I have a very strong aversion to stealing or cheating the system.

Obviously I know small businesses cant absorb the same blow that a corporation can and realistically, Sbux isn't hurting when a customer gets an undue discount but I can't shake the irritation I get when people try.

Then I think an added layer happened when I started working at sbux and saw just how entitled people really were. The same Karen driving her Tesla is throwing a fucking fit over having to pay a .20 cent price increase when all I want is to get my shift over and make rent. Honestly its not even about the company its more my desire to stick it to the entitled customer. What can I say, I'm petty.
ItzBoogieMan 2 points 7m ago
I literally don’t give a damn about Starbucks profit margins. I tell my own customers Starbucks is expensive and a ripoff. The only people that should be using a partner discount for Starbucks is people who work at Starbucks. I don’t care if it’s your wife’s card, or your sisters or your friends card who is sitting in the car, your not using it and I’m not going to give you the discount. You want a discount then apply for Starbucks. Period.

If your friend is not here, she can mobile order just fine.

We were told at our store to ask for id
bellamythos 16 points 7m ago
you should ask for ID if they give you the partner numbers to put in, but like OP said, if they have the partner card in the app (or a physical partner card, if they still have those) then policy is to not ask for ID
megs1288 62 points 7m ago
I always ask for the name on the account and that’s my way of identifying..I don’t get paid enough to check IDs
peaachyykeen 5 points 7m ago
this. I always ask for last names specifically, just because I don’t want to out trans partners or make them uncomfortable, but i truly don’t get paid enough to give a shit.
megs1288 4 points 7m ago
Yeah, even if it’s a man on a woman’s account..I’m not risking misgendering someone cause the want discount on a 6 dollar latte
insertusernameplease 31 points 7m ago
This is why I tend to mobile order at stores I’m unfamiliar with. I don’t like it but it’s easier than fighting them
sushibroni 27 points 7m ago
once i was id’d, i let the barista know that i’m trans and that the name on my id isn’t going to match what’s in the system, but that it would say michael and match my last name and everything. she grabs my id and goes “the name doesn’t match. what store are you at” i told her and she sighs and goes “okay”. it felt awful
plastixhearts 16 points 7m ago
one of my friends that is a partner is trans and her name in the system rings up as a man. That’s why I don’t ID. You never know, and starbucks can afford to give a lil discount
feisty314 9 points 7m ago
Your friend should be able to change her preferred name - it won't change it on legal documents like tax forms and probably pay stubs, but it will show up for her discount, when she logs into Partner Hub, etc. It used to be in Partner Info, but it might be in Partner Central now. I will try to remember to look it up when I go in.
feisty314 2 points 7m ago
Go to partnercentral.starbucks.com and log in, click My Profile, and right at the top is Personal Information. Click the little pencil to edit, and you can change the "Known as Name."
kileyisrad 15 points 7m ago
I’m sorry this isn’t about your question but how do you put partner numbers on the app lol
iluvmoss [OP] 10 points 7m ago
when i did it i logged into mypartnerinfo and there should be tab on the side that says partner card which should give you you’re card number and security code. from there you can go into the mobile app and add a gift card using the number and security code and then you’ll be able to scan it in stores and have it bring your info up. i think there’s another step to be able to work for mobile ordering though which i haven’t done. i hope that helps!!
jordanshaw89 10 points 7m ago
The other possibly easier way is to just login to Starbucks.com with your app account and in the profile settings it has an option to verify employment with partner numbers (source: I recently trained 9 baristas and this was part of my manager’s expectation of me, to help the green beans setup everything including partner discount)
AriaManiac 6 points 7m ago
Honestly I might start asking for ID.
Recently had a "partner" come in and ask for a lemonade with strawberry acai and raspberry. Rang it in as a Strawberry Acai Lemonade with raspberry since I assumed it would be cheaper.

When I took her numbers, she said she didn't want a strawberry acai lemonade or with the strawberries.

Ok.. Ask partner on bar to do lemonade with a splash of strawberry acai + syrup.

Forgot to take the strawberries off but I did.

Give her the drink and she visibly looks frustrated.

She comes back in minutes later and complains to the shift about her drink. Shift remakes it (lemonade with splash of strawberry acai and specified to not shake it.)
Shift did and the "partner" left angry, saying she didn't want the lemonade and acai to mix :^)
Glum-Art8962 6 points 7m ago
I'd place a mobile order at that point. these drinks are SO pricey nowadays 😔
-Zispy 4 points 7m ago
Lol, imagine placing a mobile order at the store instead and picking it up. They’d feel real dumb
ShannyES 4 points 7m ago
You are correct. The green apron card itself loaded onto the app is ID enough according to policy. I would call the store and ask to speak to a manager as this is an ‘opportunity for improvement’ and to ensure that partners are also treated to the third place experience.
butterflymomo 3 points 7m ago
once i was out of town and stopped by a bux and tried to use my numbers, they fully denied letting me use my numbers unless i had it in my app as a partner card!! i was so confused, i offered to show my ID and everything but they straight up said no not unless it's your partner card in your app. i just left tbh lol
FreeGas2213 3 points 7m ago
Literally why do they need an ID? It's not like it's their money 💀
Mhill0823 3 points 7m ago
I would have cancelled the order and then mobile ordered. The app gives you the discount on mobile orders. And I’d have told him I was doing that.
kobo15 3 points 7m ago
The only time I’ve asked for ID is when there was that TikTok trend for awhile where random people figured out partner numbers were on the receipt (before they fixed it) and you could tell the person was reading the numbers off something and it clearly wasn’t theirs
peepeepoopaccount 2 points 7m ago
No way he gets paid enough to do that sh1t
[deleted] 2 points 7m ago
How do attach it to your account as gift card to scan no one will show me at my store saying it to complicated
bevoftw 5 points 7m ago
if you go to partnerinfo you can see your partner “card” numbers. you add that as a card on the app and your info will pop up on scan!! You can get a physical copy i believe as well. I think to get the 3 star benefit and to use it with mobile you have to log on to the website and add your numbers in as well. Not 100% sure abt that one though, I havent done it myself.
iluvmoss [OP] 1 points 7m ago
if you log into mypartnerinfo and click on the partner card tab it should give you your card number and security code. then if you go into the mobile app you can add a gift card using the number and code and then you can scan it in stores to bring your info up!
[deleted] 1 points 7m ago
Thank you!! I got it!!

avoiding deadnaming is most of/the whole reason that if it’s in your app you aren’t required to show ID

They never let me use my discount lol, honestly it’s fine with me. I’m too sick of drinking starbucks on my days off. But yeah every licensed starbucks I’ve been to they say I can’t use it, and I just accept it because I don’t want to be an annoying customer lol.
iluvmoss [OP] 27 points 7m ago
yeah i know licensed stores can’t accept partner discounts but this was another corporate store
Ok_Inflation5578 10 points 7m ago
Sorry, my bad I thought licensed stores meant corporate stores, I’m an idiot. Not the target stores. The last one I went to in Port Authority didn’t let me use my discount, nor the one in Time Square.
Ok_Inflation5578 1 points 7m ago
Alsooo the one in the mall! I’m not sure if the mall ones are corporate or licensed though.
yesimabarista 3 points 7m ago
it depends on the mall tbh, the one in the mall by me is corporate but the next closest mall has a licensed one
astivana 11 points 7m ago
Licensed stores don’t do corporate discounts because they aren’t corporate themselves. Their employees don’t get the same benefits as us, either.
verdeuce 1 points 7m ago
That’s so rude. If you have the card on your app they shouldn’t be asking for ID also
H321652976 1 points 7m ago
Just do a mobile order if they didnt want too.

lol y’all stop at Starbucks on your days off?
photo_rain 0 points 7m ago
You can also add your partner number to the app by going to the Starbucks rewards website (on a computer) and going to your account and I believe in the personal info section it has a partner number slot where you just put your numbers in. That way you don’t have to get the gift card
olliesbees -2 points 7m ago
my entire district requires us to ID for partner discounts or at least ask for like a picture of their schedule. we’ve had a lot of people use their family or friends Partner numbers for discounts and have gotten that partner in trouble.
Pylon-Cam 7 points 7m ago
If their partner card is attached to their Starbucks account, that counts as their ID and you don’t need to check their actual ID!

TEMPEST-Attack -1 points 7m ago
We were coached to ask for ID, and it was on the weekly update when this change began over a year ago, before everyone decided that COVID was over.
HarleyLeMay 3 points 7m ago
That’s only for saying the numbers for them to type in. Policy states that having the card on your app is ID enough because it can literally only be used on a single account.
TEMPEST-Attack 1 points 7m ago
That’s also another exception for that reason.
mrrumplethedarkone -16 points 7m ago
ID isn’t required bc it’s transphobic and you can inform partners of that when they act like that.
astivana 16 points 7m ago
ID can be required if the partner doesn’t have a partner card on them, but OP is right that it’s not required when the numbers are attached to their app because their partner card is on the app in that case.
