for me, when it comes to training, i try to make the transition as easy for them as possible. we were all new once and we all know how difficult it can be to learn everything. i always tell my fellow barista trainers that explaining why we do things a certain way will be a full-proof way to help someone understand something.
for example, let’s saw you’re teaching milk steaming. instead of just simply explaining how to pour the milk, steam, and groom, go into more detail. “this is the steaming pitcher, the lines on it go by sizes. we measure it this way to make sure we’re not wasting milk and to help make sure you have enough foam to fill the cup.” show the process, then let them try. then move on and keep doing that. i feel like the best trained baristas are the ones who know the core mechanics of the process instead of just the overall steps.
i hope this helps, and good luck to you!!
