nail polish/acrylics rules(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Defiant_Difference14
this isn’t so much of a question really, but i’m wondering why starbucks has a stricter policy on nail polish and acrylics than a company like dutch bros? i used to be a former broista and we were allowed to have nail polish, gel, and acrylics so long as they weren’t cracked or flaking. we were a food service place regardless of the laid back branding the company has, so is there a particular reason starbucks is so strict about their nail policy where they won’t even let you wear gloves if you have them done?

It’s a health code issue, plain and simple. Nails harbor bacteria and it’s been proven that most people a) don’t wash their hands properly, especially when wearing gloves and b) accidents happen and if your nail did crack/break/flake and end up in someone’s food or drink, you open sbux up to health code violations at best or at worst, lawsuits.
Dutch really should be more mindful of that.

i was sure that was the case but i’m surprised dutch bros hasn’t followed the same protocol, you would’ve figured it would’ve been changed by now.

Larger corps will be more strict about sanitation guidelines because they’re in many states/countries, some of which may have safety laws that are more strict than others, so they apply that same standard to all stores, even if the law in that particular area doesn’t call for it.

Honestly I wish we could but I’m also glad we don’t. Nails are so dirty and I know damn well people suck ass at washing their hands, to add chipped acrylic nails and polish flakes falling off into drinks or food is gross. BUT most places allow them in restaurants so I guess it doesn’t make sense

I never understood this either. I was a bartender and waitress for 15 yrs, you would think the same would apply if it were a health code issue.

it’s more of a handling food issue. when you’re on ovens you can’t have acrylics or painted nails. since you have the possibility of being placed on ovens you can’t have nails at all, and i guess sometimes it has to do with how chaotic being on bar is. but at smaller cafes like the one i’m at and im guessing at bars they let you have nails because you’re not “directly touching” food.

it’s a health code issue and is a protocol that all food places are required to follow. if they don’t, it’s simply lazy management and probably a dirty store.
