Personal LOA for study abroad (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by blahblahcapitalism
i'm a college student and i was wondering if anyone could help me with taking an LOA. i want to study abroad in about a year and a half, but i really want to keep my job. i've been a partner for over 2.5 years and the benefits are crucial for me as a college student. i asked my SM and she didn't know if i would even be able to because of study abroad. has anyone had a similar situation? tia

edit: i’d be studying abroad for 4 months, which would be in a year and a half, so spring 2024

I’ve just gone through the Benefits Plan Description for 2022-2023 and I don’t think you can take anything other than a personal LOA or Coffee Break for school.

Personal LOA’s are only 30 days max and you only qualify for a coffee break after 10 years of employment. So based on that, I don’t think you’ll be able to take an LOA for studying abroad.

But it’s still worth calling a leave specialist at Sedgwick and asking!

Probably not but if your manager likes you they will probably be happy to rehire you when you’re back

It really depends on your manager. I work in a college town so it happens pretty frequently here. They just leave you on the payroll and not schedule you. Not standard but again depends on ur manager.

Hey OP! This actually isn’t a terrible idea if your SM is okay with it!

The only thing you’d have to get around is the 12 hours avg per week that’s required to be worked to maintain employment (you get flagged in partner hours if you drop below that and then we start getting emails from the DM asking why the partner is below the required average).

But if you’re only planning on being away for 4 months to study abroad and you’re not planning to do that for another 1.5 years, you could just work on banking like all of your vacation time until you leave. Then just write in 12 hours each week to be paid out while you’re gone (or whatever you’d need to make sure you meet the average requirements depending on when you leave/return and how that lines up with the company’s fiscal quarters).

Yeah luckily my DM understands and is okay with it. It really depends on your management sadly.

that’s kind of what i was thinking! my store has 80 partners so not everyone gets 12 hours a week anyways and our DM is cool with it. thanks for the suggestion!! (and yes it’s only 4 months)

for a year and a half though? that could easily mean a new sm and what if they don’t know or don’t accept it? my store has been through 3 sm’s in the past year and are about to lose our current one

Well you hope that whatever sm you have at the time will accept it. If not, speak to your DM if there’s anyway they would approve an extended loa. Otherwise, you’ll have to leave the company temporarily unfortunately, but your education come first.
