Anyone got the news about January yet?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by claretamazon
I'm not sure if I should put what is happening in Jan here. However, I know that they'll place the blame at the feet of cc tipping.
Edit: I was trying to see if anyone else knew about it. They're cutting store hours back nationwide. Again.
rudebii151 points7m ago
Doesn’t that happen every January anyway?
I remember every new year hours would get slashed. Business would slow down a lot after new years, so it made sense but still sucked.
claretamazon [OP]26 points7m ago
I started Jan of this year so if it is normal then I'm being dumb lol
scmfckwaido2 points7m ago
I’m prettt sure it’s bc it’s after the holidays so it’s less busy (🙄 still dumb)
Flowerfuls81 points7m ago
January is one of the slow months of the year. This always happens.
BatWeary29 points7m ago
i’m so curious what ppl mean by slow months because we consistently make $12k at least every single day of the year (with exceptions for holidays/events in the area where we make closer to 14 or 15k)
Flowerfuls20 points7m ago
Aka where your revenue , sales all the numbers are the lowest. I think there’s a few months actually. It doesn’t mean you aren’t making a lot - those are just when your sales routinely fall lower than any other time. It’s usually because of post holiday brokenness lol. People spent their moneys on gifts etc. it’s pretty normal.
BatWeary7 points7m ago
i feel like our store gets increasingly more busy each month, idk. we’re the busiest in our district atm and will probably only get worse because of the area we’re in
claretamazon [OP]18 points7m ago
Unfortunately, my store is right across the street from a college so there isn't really a slow time until the summer.
Firm-Ant76846 points7m ago
My store is also across from a college and we are pretty high volume throughout the year. Even when college isn’t there it’s still pretty busy. It can be stressful at nights when you might have to do dto/dtr, Drive Bar, and Café/mobile during the summer because we have less staff.

They’re already cutting hours. As an SM, it’s very hard for me to not give the hours deserved. It’s truly heart breaking and it’s making me really depressed and very stressed. I’ve been trying my best though and offering hours in other stores if possible. It’s only going to get worse.
claretamazon [OP]19 points7m ago
For those of us in ASU it's like wtf... We have several students at my store, myself included, and now we're worrying about getting those 520hrs.
beignet6217 points7m ago
The January audit was reduced to 450 hours btw
claretamazon [OP]11 points7m ago
Yup. I'm worried about the mid-year audit after these changes.
ElectricWallaby5112 points7m ago
Yeah I have open availability and usually am getting scheduled 30 hours and above if I’m lucky, lately it’s been like 25 but I’m networking w a bunch of stores to make up for it. I just feel bad for peeps that can’t borrow to get hours. I’ve worked 3 different stores the last two weeks to make enough to pay bills. I don’t want to think about what’s coming
CBukowski80836 points7m ago
This happens every year. January-February are incredibly slow times for most SBUX. Customers have been drained of their money because of the holidays and they’re cutting costs. The hours start to pick back up when things start to heat up in March/April.
starryesque24 points7m ago
Then why make a post if you’re not going to share the news?
Edit: Cutting hours even more than they did for the holiday season?
claretamazon [OP]-4 points7m ago
Yup. M to Thurs close at 6.30, Fri is 8.30, Sat and Sunday is 7.30 still as far as I know
idkcassie24 points7m ago
that kind of thing is on a store to store basis. the hours and labor for each store will shift depending on the projected business needs, as they do after each holiday season when business slows down.
Awkward-for-You2 points7m ago
Yeah, it’s all pretty random in my district. One store is actually extending their hours. Mine is the only one that has no change coming.
the-earth-says-hello19 points7m ago
Are y’all only getting hours cut? Our SM has to demote 1-2 shifts…. And we still don’t know who.. #cantshitcantsleep
scoutdanylo11 points7m ago
Seriously! We’re about to lose 2-3 shifts for various reasons and it’d leave us with 3 left and our SM still is trying to demote another one of them…leaving 1 opening and 1 closing SSV
astivana5 points7m ago
….how do they plan to even run the store??
DigitalBath1019 points7m ago
i’ve been with the company for 4+years and have never heard of a SM having to demote a ssv due to labor/hour cuts. this sounds like something else going on.
ConfusionDisastrous810 points7m ago
They are now looking more closely at what used to be called "shift compliment." It might be that there are too many key holders that work the same shifts, and they need to minimize the amount of labor dollars they are spending at the same time.
the-earth-says-hello3 points7m ago
I think that’s exactly what it is. There’s like 5 morning and 2 evening shifts with 2 mids. There’s too much labor going toward SSVs and not enough revenue to account.
DigitalBath1012 points7m ago
actually if anything the SM that sent that ssv thru training and gave them the job and made the schedule should lose money off their yearly bonus/or salary. not the ssv that took the available position.
DigitalBath1011 points7m ago
this seems more like a result of poor decision making on the SM. not anything to due to loss of sales when holiday season comes to a slow. the ssv should be transferred to a nearby store in need of a shift. but demoted? never.
ConfusionDisastrous83 points7m ago
It's been a big back and forth. Sms being told to invest by senior leadership and then almost immediately being told to schedule to zero. Sms are doing the best they can with what they've got.
brokenleftjoycon19 points7m ago
They cut hours in December and then again in January. I’ll never forget when I went from working ~35 hours in October to ~15 hours by January. It’s a recurring cycle.
kittykaty143 points7m ago
So what I'm hearing is that it's a cycle and it'll pick back up again? I'm about to hit my one year in March so a drop in hours is a little scary
brokenleftjoycon3 points7m ago
Yes. It happens yearly because January is generally a slower months. It will pick up later.
plastixhearts16 points7m ago
well im hoping i’ll get a starbucks induced permanent nap in january but not all christmas wishes come true so what is happening in January what’s the news
H4ckeralias13 points7m ago
this is nationwide?? holy hell, I thought it was just my store
Buffcats4207 points7m ago
They are saying we can’t go below 15 hours before losing benefits or being taken off the schedule yet only schedule me for 15 hours. How am I supposed to pay bills I need to work 25 hours a week. Not my GMs fault but ugh I wanna buy presents and my hours are shit so I’m broke
darkwolf5237 points7m ago
Hours are already cut though. Smh
Kivic5 points7m ago
It’s not just January it already started in my district… we’ve been doing 3-4 partner plays through all day parts except for peak.
vics_565 points7m ago
They’re already cutting hours unfortunately :( my sm schedules over labor and we still only have 5-6 partners for peak and 3 partner plays in the afternoon. We’re the busiest in our district and consistently stay in the top 3 in my state. We make back the labor we used and even double it but they still continue to cut us :(
kaynist4 points7m ago
they can say its slow season all they want, fact is that shit picks up like crazy after the holiday season cus everybodys got gift cards and arent worrying abt saving up for gifts and shit. its not a good time
beauloki4 points7m ago
Happens at almost every retail & food service location unfortunately. People get $$ drained after the holidays, they make New Year’s resolutions, and then around Spring it goes back to “normal”.
My hours last year at when I was working at Best Buy during the holidays & Summer went from 45+ a week to 15 a week in the Jan-March months 😂
Same goes with some mall stores I worked at, a bakery, etc. It’s just the unfortunate part of running a business like ours, all the circumstances are predictable, but, I feel like because of Tik Tok it honestly might change.
Sorry for the long reply, I have these conversations with people every year 😂
cocoabutterkissez3 points7m ago
ive already planned that im getting a second job after these holidays .
Danny_z643 points7m ago
I know I'll get downvoted for saying this buuuut.... you can always pick up at other stores. If I don't have the hours I want I usually pick up the extra from a closer store.
I was part of our uplift squad last year and have worked in 11 different starbucks since then. I have a pretty good relationship with most of those stores (sm, supervisor and barustas) and am still borrowed to a few of them, so I can pick up there.
Honestly if you've never tried picking up at another store and like what you do, please try it. It's fun, you get paid the milage and get on good terms with that team if you do it enough.
rfpetrie3 points7m ago
I've got silence here... what's happening??
letthecoffeeflow3 points7m ago
What do you mean?
Tdawwg782 points7m ago
Afaik, Labour is scheduled based on sales from 3 weeks ago and a year ago in an algorithm. Last year at this time there was a big spike in Covid so although December is typically a busy month, our store is cutting hours because of these statistics. Like others have said January through March is typically the slowest time of the year. Slowdown Really gets going 3rd week of January after most have got their first post holiday credit card statement but the shift happens January 2 onward, especially with food since many start watching what they eat.
Necessary_Low9392 points7m ago
If they’re cutting hours in Jan, would it still be min 12 hrs to meet benefits? I honestly don’t mind if I get less than 12 hrs, this is my second job but would like to know for others.
