Is being a shift worth it? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Ecstatic-Experience3
I‘ve been a barista with Starbucks for 2 years and this past week a shift supervisor position opened up offering a $5 raise. All the current shifts at my store say it’s not worth it. I could use the extra money but am already not a huge fan of the job lmao
celloqueer 87 points 7m ago
You miiiight have greater ability to negotiate your schedule (if you’re not one of the stores that has “too many” shifts and is hurting for hours) but your stress level will most likely skyrocket.
AriSchmana 53 points 7m ago
I’m currently a shift and have been for over 1 1/2 years at a high volume drive thru and I love it. You will learn a lot and it will look good on your resume should you decide not to stay with Sbux. I say give it a shot, if you don’t like it, you can always demote back to barista.
Ecstatic-Experience3 [OP] 37 points 7m ago
It being on my resume is also a big factor since I’m only 18 and this is still my first job I’m trying to get all the experience i can lmao Thank you!
AriSchmana 15 points 7m ago
Absolutely, I am all for partner development and supporting growth. 👍 My only suggestion is do a practice interview with your manager or another manager. That way you’ll have a better chance at getting the promotion.
Babeyy_Olivia 6 points 7m ago
Been working for the bux for 3 years now and I’ve been a shift for a little over a year now (got promoted at 18) and while it can be stressful at times, the pay raise is super nice and I feel like it definitely balances out the stress level. I feel like it’s worth it and the option to demote yourself is always gonna be there. Good luck with the interview process if you do choose to go for it !!

AFter 3 years, I became a shift. Yes - few bucks is nice. I have great co-workers.

Are the few bucks worth all that is required? nope.
Flowerfuls 23 points 7m ago
Tbh it’s not worth it but I need the money so … lol
Data_Dame 2 points 7m ago
Why is it not worth it?
adventurelyfe 16 points 7m ago
Because you’re doing a managers job on bad hourly pay.
Data_Dame 2 points 7m ago
Which part of the job do you consider to be a manager's job and which part do you think are supervisors?
OneRoseDark 9 points 7m ago
it's more like Starbucks assigns things to supervisors that are more often done by managers at other jobs. I've seen several times that SSV positions here are often leveraged to get AGM positions at other companies. Which means we're probably doing more than we're being paid for.

The pay is barely worth the amount of stress I deal with at my store on a regular basis. If I didn’t need the money I wouldn’t have taken the position
Data_Dame 2 points 7m ago
What stress do you deal with now that you didn't as a barista?
RedDeadGurl 3 points 7m ago
Probably everything involving money, doing pulls, call outs, managing the schedule for the day

TLDR: depends ur store - mine… not worth it

Honestly at my store no. Many of us shifts demoted. Our district is awful though and management is awful and DM is awful. It was literally so much pressure and stress and noooo real help and impossible expectations… it drove many of the shifts to have to raise their anxiety/ depression meds or to get on them for the first time ever. Also … shifts had all their hours cut too in our store. Like no one makes over 30 hours if they are lucky. Shifts in my store get all the blame too for everything and no support or encouragement. One shift did the math and figured out even with the pay cut for demoting … he (who is a tenure too) would make more being a barista because they would get more hours.
rnaggie53 8 points 7m ago
It’s not that bad. I just became a shift a few months ago & it’s not hard at all. I would say as long as your coworkers respect you, you will have a smooth transition!
AdTall3962 5 points 7m ago
I’d say it’s a 2 sided coin.
If you’re in a store with other shifts and a SM that do their fair share of work. My $20 an hour is absolutely worth it. My biggest worry in my shift is breaks, inventory, the pull, and closing tasks ( I’m a closing shift 12-cl)
I’m at a relatively slow store that allows me to spend 2-3 hours a night getting my tasks and deep cleaning done.
Some nights I need to spend more time on the floor helping baristas but other nights I can focus on store cleanliness and other essentials. I’ve been with the company since 2018 and I’ve spent about 3 years of that being a shift in a few separate stores. The thing that has helped me the most in getting through a shift is learning your partners strengths and having clear lines of communication. I let partners know exactly what my plan is ( like I’m going to finish my count in a minute and then im sending you on your ten. Or “ hey, x can you cover drive thru while I take over for y’s lunch”

Once partners know im going to try my best to have a good fun shift, they’ve let me steward the nights how I see fit.
It’s scary at first but you’ll grow into your role and hopefully you’ll have experienced shift leads you can lean on for support.

Not every store is going to take their time to make sure you’re ready for this new role and sometimes you’re set up to fail. But I hope that in the end you’ll get to a place where it’s manageable and comfortable for you

I think it depends on what kind of person you are. Personally, I got fed up with the bad leadership in my store when I was a barista and thought "I can do this better than them." And then I got promoted. Even now I can't even think about demoting myself because I'm pretty sure I would try to run the floor anyways and I'm not trying to do a job that I'm not being paid to do lol. The money doesn't hurt, and it is/can be super stressful depending on your store and management, but for me it was and still is worth it.

I’d say if you like your store/coworkers, go for it! I was feeling pretty burnt out on being a barista when the opportunity arose to become a shift at my store. I took the chance, and am really enjoying the new dynamic in which I engage with my same old store and coworkers.
vegan-trash 3 points 7m ago
I’ve been a shift for 5ish years and I much prefer being a shift.
butterflymomo 3 points 7m ago
i've been at the bux for 5 years and been a shift for 4 of them and tbh i love it, it's def not for everyone tho there is another level is stress that comes with it but the pay is what makes it worth it for me lol
dontgiveah00t 3 points 7m ago
I only do it so I can afford to only work 20-25 hours (full time ASU student). It is hard work. Downside is you’re more expensive to have on the clock, so when labor cuts happen they rarely schedule two shifts at the same time. Or you get scheduled one less barista per play if you get two shifts, not sure if that’s a win lol

Altruistic-Bake-7634 3 points 7m ago
Yes! You have more consistent hours and the pay raise makes the job feel worth it
SupaSadButSupaRad 2 points 7m ago
Heavily depends on your stores business volume and your management. If you’re already heavily stressed and your manager sucks I’d say no. A shitty manager can ruin a shift experience (I was hired in as a shift and learned first hand).
jillybrews226 2 points 7m ago
Do you have good management? Do you feel comfortable with everything you need to know as a barista? Do you feel like you could run shift better than some of your ssv’s? Then yes

If you’re already stressed and don’t like the job then no.
hdmp3converter 2 points 7m ago
they are cutting shifts hours across the country so you might get paid more but you might make less when you aren’t allowed to work more than 15 hours a week, also it’s not worth it
MatchingColors 1 points 7m ago
I’d say worth it 100%

You get higher pay and personally I find the job easier. You are responsible of course for much more and you are the bridge between your SM and your partners. This is cool and not cool at the same time.

Regardless, it’s fantastic experience for the future. Learning to lead (and not boss, there is a difference) is a great skill.

I would say if you really don’t enjoy your job as a barista at your store, you probably won’t enjoy it as a shift. But if you like what you do currently then go for it. I’m paid $22 an hour and it’s super dope.
taserbabyy 1 points 7m ago
I’ve been a shift for a little over 2 years. With the pay now, I’d say it’s 100% worth it, definitely wasn’t when I first promoted lol. But something that a lot of people WONT mention-keep in mind you are responsible for a lot more and WILL be held accountable for anything that goes wrong. Miss a count? Miss a pull? Speak to a barista in any way other than kind (think being short with someone because you’re stressed)? All of that is going to fall back on you, and most likely will end in a write up. I’m not saying it isn’t warranted or deserved-because it is-but make sure you’re ready to be held accountable to a whole new level.
You also have to commit to being a role model to your store and baristas. Standard, dress code, customer connection, etc. all become your priorities even more so because your baristas and SM are watching.
I don’t necessarily think these are bad things, either. Shifts make a lot more money than we used to, and it makes a lot more sense we’re held to this standard now more than ever. Just make sure you’re mentally prepared for these situations, don’t go in thinking it’ll be easy/chill.
But with all of that said, I LOVE being a shift. I love the structure/responsibility, and I love leading a floor and building that trust with my team. I would never demote unless absolutely necessary. It’s definitely a job with a big learning curve, but once you get comfortable it’s WAY better than being a barista :)

i was at the company for about 8 months as a barista before i was promoted to shift after my 18th birthday. i’ve been a shift for about 7 months. i worked at two stores now as a shift and have covered several other stores in the area as one as well. if you are adaptable and a good planner, i would say go for it! if not, it might add a lot more stress, especially when others look to you when things go wrong. just know that not every day is the same, plans change, and things need to be done regardless of what happens. definitely have been at the store two hours after close a few times because of bad days.
Aliciarox11189 1 points 7m ago
Depends on your SM and trainer (development etc)
Also do you plan on staying? Or just have good on a resume?
ashley0927 1 points 7m ago
I say it’s worth it but I knew I wanted to be a shift from the start. I didn’t care about the pay I wanted the experience for my resume. I think it’s better than being a barista but it does come with a lot of responsibilities. Don’t just do it for the money.

Honestly it depends on your store and if you’re willing to have a flexible schedule. As a shift I’ve had to open up my availability more to fit the store needs and also it’s very hard to find coverage if something comes up because there’s less shifts than baristas. I do like being able to run the play how i like it and I’m very good w delegation and helping others build on their experience which I get to see more of with coaching. It does get stressful when people call out, you don’t get a full staff, you have to balance all the shifts tasks, sometimes you can’t take your 10s bc at least for me I give everyone else there breaks first instead of me, having to go to district shift meetings, having to take the fall for ANYTHING that goes wrong during a shift, making sure everything gets done at a reasonable time, and making sure your transitions look good. I do really enjoy it but some days it is very stressful to the point that I ask myself if it’s even worth the few extra dollars. It’s all up to you at the end and if you believe that you can handle it
krym32zamoon 1 points 7m ago
Like most people are saying it really depends on your situation. For me I had to leave my store and my district in order to move up. But I don't regret it and think while worth it I just wish it had happened sooner cause I could have been making dollars more so I'm salty about that lol
lewabwee 1 points 7m ago
Whether or not it’s worth it depends on your sm, baristas and customers. I have it pretty easy right now.
Kaluskydrak 1 points 7m ago
If you’re not a huge fan of the job I wouldn’t recommend it, you’ll get stressed about something you don’t care about
b99__throwaway 1 points 7m ago
i love it. it’s hard sometimes but if you have a good supportive team the pay is worth it.
