People who no longer work at Starbucks, what do you do now?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by PerfectHybrid
princesslxz104 points7m ago
I am currently serving at a bar before i start nursing school next fall! Love it so much better. Better money & way less stressful. People are way nicer too, obviously.
PerfectHybrid [OP]78 points7m ago
The natural progression from barista to bartender lol That’s great happy for you
cocoabutterkissez10 points7m ago
This is what im thinking of doing. I love being a barista and making drinks but damn its so stressful.
Rasbearylemon5 points7m ago
HOW DID YOU DO IT
notkaitlynn46 points7m ago
How I transitioned from barista to bartender is I found a place that’s not a designated bar, and in the interview I highlighted the skills I have to memorize hundreds of drink recipes and the capacity to customize any beverage. Hope this helps!
Rasbearylemon5 points7m ago
Thank yoUUUUu
CamdenF4 points7m ago
Ah dang. Went the wrong way… whoops.
Animuthrowawayplz60 points7m ago
I work at a library now and am about to go back to school for mortuary science.
CoffeeChesirecat14 points7m ago
I'd love to work at a library! Around here it seems that it is either half the Starbucks pay, or they require a masters degree!?
Animuthrowawayplz16 points7m ago
Yeah I took a pay cut for it, but it's also around the corner vs the 30 min drive one way to starbucks. Masters degrees are needed to be a librarian, but I don't have that title lol
CoffeeChesirecat6 points7m ago
Oh, thanks for clarifying that last part. I really wanted to be one as a kid. I hope it's as wonderful as it sounds. Worth the paycut for your sanity, I think.
bigghostb00ty10 points7m ago
I’m in school for mortuary science right now!! Good luck :)
Animuthrowawayplz7 points7m ago
Thank you! I'm still waiting to hear if I got into the program or not. I'm obsessively checking my emails to hear back.
genbotz54 points7m ago
quit sbux to become a shift lead at a cannabis dispensary :)
vanilllacakez19 points7m ago
That’s dope !!!
genbotz10 points7m ago
i see what you did there!
Mr-Yoop18 points7m ago
My ssv said that one of the people who used to work at our store works at a weed shop. She also said her dad, who runs a weed shop, would interview anyone who had Starbucks on their resume. That’s how I found out “budtender” was a word
super-duper-trooper-53 points7m ago
Full time college student and work for a school district doing groundskeeping.
Better-Cow39 points7m ago
I’m a nurse now, and I miss working at Starbucks soo much!
DustbinFunkbndr24 points7m ago
Small local coffee shop chain. Absolutely love it. I’m seen as a person and actually get paid well. The customers are better. The culture is better. I make real coffee. I’m so much happier
Mr-Yoop3 points7m ago
I think I’m gonna get let go from Starbucks soon (got sick for two weeks and can’t make up the hours) and I really want to work at this wonderful vegan cafe. I’m just worried that I don’t have enough experience to make “real” coffee.
DustbinFunkbndr2 points7m ago
Go for it. Your current experience will make the learning curve much easier!
Mr-Yoop2 points7m ago
Idk I’d love to but I’ve only worked there for a few month and they barely put me on bar :/
PerfectHybrid [OP]23 points7m ago
Happy so many of y’all made it out
ladytaters18 points7m ago
Car dealership customer specialist. I miss the free espresso, but there is nothing on Earth that could make me go back to the bux.
bethanyjbrooks36 points7m ago
This ^^^ the only thing I miss are my good friends (I don’t miss the drama starters though) & also free coffee/food, & a flexible schedule. But my new job is so much less stressful, more structured & more satisfying.
photo_rain18 points7m ago
Pregnant and on bed rest hahaha Stay at home mom right now for my three kiddos
Miss working but boy do I not miss sbux hahaha

I work at Trader Joe’s. Took a pay cut from SSV to crew but happier than I’ve ever been at a job. I’ve taken about 5 of my ex coworkers with me, and they feel the same. Highly recommend it to any partners looking to leave the siren
BlueWaters993 points7m ago
Tell us more…. What do you enjoy about Trader Joe’s? I wanted to work there before I got interviewed for SBUX
badbaristuh5 points7m ago
I have almost no words to describe the utter lack of stress and responsibility TJ’s places on its workers in comparison to sbux. Part of it is that I went from 14 coworkers to 140 — being “shortstaffed” on a shift at TJs doesn’t mean scrambling around like it’s life or death while working 2 jobs at once, it’s more like your management will decide to sacrifice a section to not properly close at night and the morning staff will make do/vice versa. That said, working there is extremely fulfilling, and if you like the hands-on element of Starbucks, also incredibly satisfying. The most noticeable difference for my mental health has been the ability to pace myself at work, the excitement of management to develop you in areas you’re passionate about, the fact that customers approach you joyfully and without bitterness or anger 99% of the time, and the opportunity to learn new things and find my personal niche within the store. Oh, bonus fun fact? As a crew member, you can earn a raise of up to $2/yr (and they generally hire above market), the company sends bonuses at EOY, health insurance is cheap and I paid $0 at my last drs visit w/ labs, and it’s 20% off of some of the cheapest food you could find in my area. Hope this helps! It’s been a wonderful 6mo!
BlueWaters993 points7m ago
Thank you for sharing your experiences at TJ. It’s interesting to me, as every time I go to my local TJ I feel a sense of joy and calm. I attributed it to the gratitude of their wonderful selection of foods. But I now believe it is an extension of how their employees feel working there.
I thought the positions were only register and stocking shelves? But it sounds like their are many other types of tasks that are done that add to the positive work experiences.
badbaristuh3 points7m ago
More or less that’s the job description, but there are hundreds of products and working every section feels a little bit different and there’s tons of optional manual labor like unloading the truck or making a bale. Not to mention breaking pallets, spending time to help customers (actually not a nightmare here), cleaning and sweeping, sign making, writing an order, training, doing tastings of new products/wine/beer, all things I personally enjoy. Another bonus is that you get people from all types of backgrounds — I work with an older man who used to cook at home for Jackie Chan when he worked as a chef, and a software engineer who was the founder of a popular social media site a decade ago. It makes conversations with your coworkers really interesting!
DieLawnUwU11 points7m ago
Working as a receiver at a grocery store I used to work at. A lot less stressful and it’s mostly mindless compared to Starbucks.
Swan9710 points7m ago
I work for a local coffee chain. It's a much better environment and higher pay
BiochemistChef10 points7m ago
Went to elder care -> doc prep for CPA + detail cleaning -> kitchen manager at a deli + modeling, acting small time + part time college (again)

I was a store manager, I had worked in hospitality my entire life. I mainly worked in hotels and restaurants. After 10 years of management, one year of Starbucks broke me. I now work as a customer success manager for a real estate company.

KobraKiddisalive4 points7m ago
I work at a candle store!!!! It’s super amazing, I have a great team and get paid a ridiculous amount of money compared to what I made at Starbucks. It helps that I technically can’t work over 45 hours because they have to pay me time and a half after that. I’m also in college for business, I’m hoping to open my own coffee shop/pet cafe!!!!!!!!!
Low_Hospital_78012 points7m ago
What candle store?
KobraKiddisalive1 points7m ago
It’s a small one in Ohio, I’m not super comfortable sharing the name because it is only in OH. they ship to everywhere in the US and Canada, but the only physical store locations are there.
Low_Hospital_78012 points7m ago
Good for you! I’m in NY was just wondering what store but I truly understand.
KobraKiddisalive2 points7m ago
No you’re good!!! I love talking about my job, I just don’t want to risk anything happening to it because of a Reddit comment 😭 if you wanted I could send you a link to the online store in a PM??

After I quit, I went to college to complete my Associate's degree in Psychology. Currently looking for a new job as a Notary since I got my seal, either as a Notary at a UPS Store or as a private mobile Notary, haven't decided yet. The thought of taking on the responsibility of being self-employed triggers panic attacks but retail is still stressful retail, so...
TBH I should probably file for disability but I'd like to work if I can.

Immediately after Starbucks, I became a manager at a locally owned coffee shop. Did that for a little while, and now I'm a high school choir director! (I had the degree when I started at Starbucks but didn't want to teach at that point in my life.)
bethanyjbrooks32 points7m ago
I spent 3.5 years at Starbucks while earning my bachelor’s degree at Ohio State. After graduating, I left Starbucks & returned to OSU as a student services counselor. 🥰 Basically, I help students with questions & concerns regarding financial aid, admissions, transcripts, & more.

Honestly, the job kinda is a little boring in comparison to the bux but the insurance rules, the hour long lunch is great, and being able to kinda fuck around has been worth it.
