Puking gets you written up?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Purple_Coffee653
I was informed today that I will be getting a write up for calling off the minute I woke up and puked. I checked the sick call off attendance policy and it says if you've puked in 24hr you aren't to be allowed to work. When I was about to let the SSV know that if I felt better/ couldn't find coverage I would be in, I was hung up on. Am I in the wrong?

How would you be in the wrong for throwing up?
You woke up, discovered that you were sick, and you called in. You are welcome to refer them to the Partner Resource Guide where the policy for sick time and callouts is written; you followed the policy.
The SSV also has no power to write you up. It would have to be done by the SM, who I would expect to have a better understanding of the sick time policy.

Nope, puking should not be getting u a write up. In no way can u get in trouble for waking up and puking right away. That shit would be media worthy if they tried getting u written up for literally waking up and puking right away and calling ur store right after.
Furthermore, it is not ur responsibility to look for coverage at the sudden onset of illness. So u should be good 🙂 and raise hell (if ur comfortable to do so) if they try anything over that. Its not right how i keep hearing more and more that us baristas become worried to call out even if we do everything correctly or hearing stories about some getting in trouble or scolded after taking all the right steps on their part

If you actually get written up, go past your SM straight to the DM. Do you have you saying you’re puking in writing?

No genuinely you did the right thing. So did I because I have also been sick and puking the last couple shifts. I attempted to find coverage for my shorter one, knew I couldn't for the 8hr. They get upset either way, and our dm doesn't like overtime so my gm never approves it so anyone willing to work an extra long day can't and its up to the couple of non minors who have the day off to possibly cover me who usually can't.

In my state (and I assume most other states), it is actually a health code violation to have someone who has vomited within a 24 hour window on shift, and for good reason. You are absolutely NOT in the wrong. No one in a supervisory or management position should be encouraging employees with potentially transmissible illness to come into work at their FOOD SERVICE JOB.
I'm so absolutely sick of how common this BS is in our industry despite, again, being literally fucking illegal in most places. Complain to your DM.

If they write you up I’d call your local new and get a good copy of that. The unions are gonna live it

You did the correct thing. You cannot work if you’ve thrown up within 24 hours. And if you’re waking up close to when your shift starts and you throw up, you don’t have much time to call off. Only thing I can think of is if this becomes a habit of calling in 30 minutes before your shift or there’s a pattern to it your SM may have a conversation with you about it. Regardless, your SSV shouldn’t hang up on you and should have said “thank you for letting me know, don’t worry about coming in, I hope you feel better soon” and moved on with their day as a professional.
