I feel like Starbucks making the drink standards to make ordering easier could’ve done the complete opposite. Kind of in the way that cable was supposed to solve all of the different tv providers subscriptions by putting them all into one, but then streaming services came out and now we basically need a cable tv version of streaming. With all of the drink customizations I feel like it would honestly be easier to just ask the customer what type of drink (latte, macchiato, etc.) then ask what milk, how many shots, what syrup and so on. Like obviously this isn’t gonna work for the speed aspect, but with all of the different foams and toppings and milks it’s just weird. I just feel like we rarely get orders that don’t have some type of customizations and we are basically typing in an entirely new drink. I don’t know if this will make sense to anyone as I am extremely neurodivergent and this is the only way I can explain it. I just wanted to get this thought out of my head.

I can totally see where you’re coming from; so many customers don’t know what they’re ordering and so many turn their drink sticker into a whole novel with mods. so I could see this approach providing more clarity on both ends, so that everyone knows exactly what the drink is supposed to be.

that said, I know that at my store, customers get annoyed/impatient if you ask what size, hot/iced, and especially (gasp) if you want whip, and often the answer they give is “idk, however it normally comes.” and we do still get a decent proportion of customers that order off the menu with no more than two easy modifications (milk, syrup, add shot, extra hot, etc.), so I do think the standard base drinks still make things easier.

Thank you! I definitely understand what you mean about customers getting aggravated. I usually only ask the relevant questions (sweetener in tea or iced coffee, whip with alternative milk, etc.) I feel like enough customers do order drinks by standard that it isn’t something Starbucks needs to change. If they keep adding stuff like cold foam and new flavors then we may be in trouble but it definitely isn’t a super significant thing. I had just got off when I posted this and I saw a TikTok that somehow took my brain to making this post 😂
