Got sent home (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mathwifey
So, as the title says I was sent home from work 1 hour into my 8 hour shift on Friday and have been told it’s going to count against me as the “3 in 30 days” thing and I’m just so confused because I did spend Thursday night at the emergency room because I wasn’t feeling well, I told my long time friend (who is also a shift supervisor at my store we have been friends since before Starbucks) and she kept offering to find me coverage, I didn’t want coverage as the ailment I went to the Dr for wasn’t anything contagious or viral I was just having stomach issues. I wanted to work. Well I show up to work on Friday and my SSV friend starts asking me how I’m feeling and I was honest and told her that I’m still in some pain but I’m ready to work, (hence why I showed up) I assumed she was asking as a friend, but instead she walked up to me an hour later and told me to go home. Then I wake up to a text later that day saying that because I left the team short a person it was going to count against me. But like? I didn’t ask to go home I was SENT home and I wasn’t at all contagious is this allowed? I kinda feel like she asked me a million questions just to hold it against me. Is this allowed?

Its against food safety standards for an employee to be working if they're vomitting/have diarrhea and it can possibly be extended to if they're nauseous.

If you're sick and were sent home theres not a lot they really can do. You didn't intentionally leave the team short and the way they're talking to you is likely an ethics and compliance violation. I'd personally report that. Sounds toxic.

Thank you for your response! That does make sense, I am just going to have a sit down discussion with my manager about the whole ordeal and apologize but also ask why I was penalized

The SM at my last store did a similar thing to me. I was violently ill and told if I called out for a 3rd day I'd be written up, without a doctor note. I went in. And, as a newer SSV, she was monitoring my every move and wrote me up anyways for "doing dishes during peak." When I was literally spinning, on so many OTC drugs to just try and survive Saturday Peak. I needed to gather myself. (Our numbers were good and it was super busy but the floor was SLAYING)

The next time our DM came in, I sat down with him and explained everything to him and asked him to transfer me. I also added that a store closer to me would save me half the time. He had me transferred in like 3 weeks and it's been the BEST change.

Edit: you're not allowed to transfer for 6 months after being written up, but once I was able to sit down with the DM and explain it, he listened and really helped me out.

Don't let people push you around, they will just keep doing it. If your manager doesn't have a good response take it to ethics if you must. If your shift found an issue with you being unwell they could have been more clear and communicated more effectively, its shady for someone to say something like being unwell and being sent home counts against you.. especially without any clarification at all.

3 in 30 days thing?? What is that?

Yeah I honestly don’t know I’ve been at Starbucks since 2017 and don’t really recall anything like that, but I just said okay lol

it’s difficult because you did refuse coverage and should have known you wouldn’t pass the covid questions with stomach issues

The thing is though, they didn’t even have me to the covid coach thing (we don’t even have the check list up at my store anymore) and my discharge papers didn’t say anything about me needing to miss work. Like I would 100% understand if I refused coverage and then showed up to my shift demanding to go home but I didn’t. It’s just odd I guess, but I do see and appreciate your point of view! In the future I will just let them find coverage for me to avoid such a situation.
