can we eliminate name tags just for the sake of customers saying it very unexpectedly at unfitting times. just a thought. I take a lady’s order today… she’s like “i’ll have a grande chai tea latte, with 3 pumps chai brooke. hot” I was like …. okay…. do I unexpectedly say their name back after just to reciprocate or😭😭 idk
chainsofgold73 points7m ago
i HATE when people say my name unexpectedly it’s like a little jumpscare. like not even just with customers my family and friends say my name and i’m so weirded out with strangers it’s just 10x worse
perfectsizzle34 points7m ago
I, personally, appreciate when custies address me by my name. It makes me feel seen as a human being and not just a barista robot. When I see their name on my screen after scanning their barcode I always say Thanks *Name* we’ll have that right out for you! Also helps me learn the names of my regulars.

until your customer uses someone elses account lmao
majik_rose16 points7m ago
I think name tags help to remind customers that we’re ppl and not robots that they can bully bc they’re having a bad day, I get it’s a little weird having ppl say ur name like they know you but it sure beats customers being dicks imo

Just change it to your partner numbers 😂😂
Responsible_Snow71097 points7m ago
Ive had customers call me by the shortened version of my first name before. I dont wana say my first name on here but the shortened version is common for people with my name but i dont kno u so please dont shorten my name urself
mymelodywithaglock5 points7m ago
when ppl just decide to assign u a nickname it’s so weird . this barista at the sbux next to mine calls me a pet version of my name. Like not even my bf calls me that cuz it doesn’t have a good ring to it lol idk why ppl think it’s funny when it’s my name and i worked hard for people to recognize my current name as Me ): (enby barista here)
drewdrop267 points7m ago
This is why I have all my stuff at work as Drew and not Andrew because otherwise people call me Andy which, no
mymelodywithaglock2 points7m ago
yea that’s good at least 😭 ur username is cute too haha
Responsible_Snow71091 points7m ago
Yea i hate when people we dont kno or customers in general who just shorten out name when they don't kno us. Its not quirky. Its just weird. And especially for people who change their names.
We have a partner who is trans (m to f) and the pronoun they go by is "they/them" and they recently changed their name in the system. Then we have a regular who stops by sometimes and she sometimes asks about this partner i just mentioned and he has 1 long earring and at one point had orange hair. Well this regular came in and asked "oh wheres the one with the orange hair and the long dangly earring?"......"the one"....dont refer to my coworkers as "the" cuz it just makes it sound like we're lower than her when she says "THE one"
And also...someone who works at my store (im not even guna say their position at the store cuz i dont wana give much away in case they use reddit. But this person i work with said its not right that this partner is trying to change something that they were born with and how she doesnt believe all that and there is only 2 genders. It sickened me when she said all that. She is respectful to them and even likes their work ethic but she doesn't believe in the fact that people can identify as more than two genders 😞 its sad
mymelodywithaglock2 points7m ago
gender queer folks are the backbone of starbucks yet we get treated the worst by customers. No one reads my pronoun pin. Probably too small. They care to read the rest though. Every day i get misgendered and it bugs me so much. I don’t expect people to get my name change correct right away, but they could at least try? Some of my coworkers (regular grocery store employees) are like, “I loveeee your old name though! it’s soooo pretty! I’m sorry but i don’t think i can ever get used to calling you by your preferred name”. I wish these people realized that it hurts and no one wants to be called something they don’t want to be called. Like these are the same people who will look at you sideways when you call them something easy, like “bestie” or “girly”, or even get upset when you call them someone else’s name. Like yeah it sucks getting mistaken! Hypocrites! The lot of them!
Responsible_Snow71091 points7m ago
Wow that's messed up that even your coworkers can't come to really accept that you have changed your name and you prefer to be called by another name. Do they think they're being quirky and cute when they say that they love your other name and when they say that they don't think they can ever get used to your preferred name? Because that isn't being quirky or cute. People have a right to be respected and called by their preferred name and to not be misgendered continuously over and over again especially when they're wearing pronoun pins and the person is able to read their name on a name tag but not the pronoun pins and constantly keeps misgendering them. That happens with a regular of hours and a trans partner. I don't understand how people are still stuck in such a way where they can't respect other people for who they are. It's disgusting and I honestly hate working with anybody that is like that but so far I've only had the one person I work with who is not 100% accepting.

it’s always a toss up for me bc i’ve had customers in the past find my coworker on social media just with their name somehow but it’s also nice to be seen as a person rather than ms. starbucks barista behind the counter
ShinyLittleBug2 points7m ago
That happened to me… some creepy guy found me and I had to block him after he found my facebook and kept sending friend requests after I kept rejecting them…
dirtychai02182 points7m ago
people have one thing and that really is the audacity, im sorry that happened to you, so creepy!!
ShinyLittleBug2 points7m ago
I was like 19, MAYBE 20 at the time… 0/10 experience… it took me a long time to put my real name on my name tag again 😖.
dirtychai02181 points7m ago
i made a point to try and make all my socials as anonymous as possible like private account, my profile pic is my cat, but like once a year they slip through the cracks. it has helped me feel so much more comfortable tho
imvni54 points7m ago
I rarely ever wear my name time because of this and I have an irrational fear of a customer getting upset and doing something to my car, which has my name on the plates 😅
floofxs23 points7m ago
I hated when customers called me by name.
jessi_callaghan3 points7m ago
I use an alias. Not giving them my real name.
Affectionate_Fart3 points7m ago
As someone who came from healthcare where first and last names were published…I’ll happily wear a name tag that can easily be erased.
Sarenord2 points7m ago
Lol I had a regular the other day and I was really happy when I thought she remembered my name until I realized I'm wearing a nametag
BabyH1ppo2 points7m ago
Put a fake name on your name tag
BeardiesRule1121 points7m ago
Just write your partner number on there… that’s all you are to Starbucks anyway :)
