Green Bean needs some POS help (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by matchbuch
So I'm a very new partner in training and had my first experience with DTO yesterday. Seems like pretty much everybody had the same first experience there and I definitely know it will get easier with muscle memory, but what tricks helped you master the POS quicker?

Where do your fingers go first when you interpret the order? Walk me through the steps in your brain a little there. With still learning the menu -- it's a lot for me.

Also -- if you have any study cards or pics of the POS $1, those would be tremendously helpful as well.

Pro tip: you can put in modifications before selecting a drink! With complicated orders it can be so helpful.

So if someone orders something and you don’t hear the drink name, just start putting in the other things in whatever order you hear. Then ask them what the base drink was, and if all of the mods are correct (either with the drive thru screen or reading it back to them)

Honestly I just would type in drinks and food during my downtime while no one ordered without sending them through and deleting them when I had a complete one. Gave me a really good understanding of where to find things. Create the most insane shit, it really helps

This really helped. Every time you have downtime and access to a POS, investigate so you start to build muscle memory. You can also recruit another partner to feed you orders to type in if it's not too busy.

Type it in as they order it even if it’s not a complete drink then follow up with questions on size or iced/hot. And repeat it as they order it so you kind of remember the drink as you go along. I took pictures of the screen when I was new and I looked at the app to know what I was selling.

Think it it like like an x and y axis. The tabs that run horizontally on the bottom are the drink choices & the tabs on the verticals right are the modifications

I tell my greenbeans to always walk the customer back. “I’m sorry, what what the name of the drink, I heard the modifications but not sure of the drink”

I’d say if you can have partners give you random drinks with changes that’s what helped me and I’ve helped my partners with that as well

If you have time, ask your partners to call out complicated drinks so you can practice punching them in.

If a customer orders something complicated, after your figure it out and their order is complete go back and re-punch it so that memory is really reinforced.

Don't be afraid to tell customers you're new. They're usually more understanding when you do.

If you can, hyper focus on what they’re saying for a short amount of time, and stall by repeating everything they say. Don’t waste tune or energy thinking about how slow this is, or worrying you’re annoying your coworkers. Just one thing at a time.

Your times won’t be as fast right now, but soon it will be muscle memory—like typing on a keyboard.

something i used to do when i was a green bean was put a headset on and then if i’m on front and i didn’t have any customers to help, i would just punch in the orders that r coming in the drive thru and just void it at the end just for the extra practice. it also helps u practice listening thru the headset since ik that was hard for me at first too
