ADHD Baristas, what accommodations do you use at work? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Priceofblindeye
I'm a safeway starbucks barista, and recently I've been so occupied juggling all my tasks, my coworkers and managers are snapping down on forgotten date dots, or just in general, things I've forgotten.

I really want to succeed, but I figure seeking insight from other people might be a good mood. I'd love tips and tricks that I could implement into my work days.

Currently, I have a little notepad my manager gave me to help me write down stuff, but honestly? It's hard to remember to do that, especially during rushes.

Also the brewing of pike every 30 minutes, and dark every 15? How do yall juggle that? 😭

Keeping a fidget cube in my apron pocket helps because my background attention is being sated so i can use foreground attention to complete tasks and i won't get distracted. Also helps when i get overwhelmed.

Our regular brought in little stone hearts for us all one day and that's my pocket fidget

I made a check list of every task i have to do throughout my shift and everything i need to check before i leave like dating syrups, date dots, rotate milks, etc. and i printed it and laminated it and just carry it in my pocket every shift

See we have a task list, and it was delighted to closing shift to ensure to date dot stuff the earlier shifts might have missed. However I do like the idea of a reminder check list :)
Could you send a picture of your list? 🥺 I'd love to see it so I could make my own!

I Literally just ask to bar since the constant motion and moving back and forth seems to keep my brain focused and grounded, so during peak I'm not at all overwhelmed

Lists for literally everything. I get teased for making so many lists at work, but they’re literally the glue that holds me together. If you can make one at the beginning of your shift, it helps with remembering. Falling into a routine with that has been helpful.

As for the coffees, wear a timer on your apron. It looks silly and feels silly, but you don’t end up forgetting about it lol

I have a checklist from my shift when I start, carry extra date dots, and fidget so my background attention is taken care of while i go through my checklist.

Omg carrying date dots on my person is such a smart idea. I tried to make extra but my manager said it looks messy which is why we don't do it. I love this idea

I have a lil pill case in my pocket and that’s where my date dots nest in! I keep all lists from my shift because everyday is a variation of the lists and eventually it gets easier.

for date dots, I try to always grab the stickers I need at the beginning of the process. Then either at the end of my shift or at close I’ll go around and double check that every product has a date on it

Labeled timers to help with brewing coffee

Lists and laminated printouts of the routines/instructions for things if I’m forgetting a step

If you have other specific things you’re forgetting during shifts I might have a suggestion

i was cleaning the ovens and someone distracted me and i left the sponge in there… the oven caught on fire, so yeah i’m just kinda raw dogging life right now and hoping for the best.

but seriously as long as i’m moving constantly and have a clear list of things to do (bar, food and front, cs, dtw and dto) i’m normally “okay”

I make lists on sticky notes. And I don’t do more than one thing at a time when I’m customer support. I’ll usually catch up dishes and then sit out all the pitchers/pump back ups that need to be made on the counter so I can see visually what needs to be done. I’ll usually ask bar partners what they need most urgently and work on that. I always have pop-it in my pocket to mess with as well! I have a coworker who insists that the honey packets are her favorite fidget

I work much more efficiently when I'm in a spot where I don't have to have a headset on. If I do wear one I turn it down as low as I can while still being able to hear what's necessary, and then my focus improves a ton. It can mean the difference between 3 minute and 10 minute drive times when I'm on bar.

Weird question but I really struggle with social anxiety and being on window or dto all day makes me want to implode. Like I’m literally overthinking about how I talk to people hours later. I love doing bar but they never give me that option even tho I am good and they are aware of my anxiety. My manager said this job isn’t good for people with anxiety. Many people have told me this but I need actually tips please 🥺
nakedavocado 4 points 7m ago
Clinical anxiety is considered a disability within Starbucks, and if your diagnosis is documented and confirmed in your file through Sedgwick management must provide the agreed accommodation per corporate. Your manager doesn't appear to know that major piece of info about the company.

I know this because I have an approved medical accommodation for anxiety disorder.
