Is SSV Forced Transfer Allowed? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by GlamrockLemon
My manger has given an SSV at my store two options. Demote themselves or be transferred to another store. Manager says it’s because SSV can’t be friends with regular baristas. The shift supervisor has some good friends who he hangs out with regularly that are baristas at our store. It has never seemed to interrupt his work quality.
Heck..I even worked with my boyfriend for a short period of time. I’m also good friends with some partners. Is this something she is allowed to do? District manager seems to be ok with my managers decision to force him out of our store. It feels so wrong.

Yea policy is kinda strict on that stuff. If ur a barista and ur working with a boyfriend or sibling who is also a barista… or if you both are a ssv that’s fine BUT right when one is a ssv and the other isn’t that’s where it becomes a problem. Because it can lead to really toxic power dynamics. So they either transfer or demote I’ve seen it happen before as well

It sounds like your SM would be firing them if they didn’t take the demotion or the move anyway. In my district our DM doesn’t want SSV’s to stay at a store for more than 6 months. For a ssv that’s only there for the people and the vibes that would suck. If the ssv is there to develop and stay with the company though, it’s probably a good experience. I’m not gonna agree that your SM is making the right decision, but since they have your DM’s approval, it seems pretty set in stone :/

That’s a ridiculously dumb policy. All the best stores are the ones who have a had a consistent team that sticks around for a long time and knows how to work well with each other…

If it doesn’t hurt the SSV’s ability to run the floor in an effective and fair manner that manager is overreacting. I’ve worked at two different stores that have had several internal promotions from barista to SSV, all of which were pretty tight with the rest of the staff. I only saw it fail once and that was because that individual could never get the hang of separating work from personal and it was dealt with. For some it’s a learning process so there might be some bumps, but as far as I know there isn’t hard rule about that.

You’re misunderstanding the policy. It specifically says that it’s only prohibited between partners when one “directly audits the work of another” (paraphrased)

That does not include SSV/baristas, but it does mean that SMs and baristas can’t be friends or SMs and shifts can’t be friends. The only time that SSVs and/or baristas being friends (or more) is a problem is if it creates an issue of favoritism

“Starbucks prohibits close relationships between partners in situations where one partner directly or indirectly supervises the other or is responsible for auditing the work of the other”

a ssv is called a shift supervisor, they are your direct supervisor. my coworker got denied a transfer because her roommate was a ssv at the store she wanted to be a barista at.

If you call PCC, they will tell you that the policy does not apply to SSV/barista relationships

Later on it specifies more clearly: “Starbucks discourages close relationships between non-management partners in situations where there is an actual or perceived conflict of interest or when the relationship creates operational challenges. When such a relationship develops, the partners are expected to talk to their manager. *In some cases, it may be sufficient for the manager to provide guidance and/or coaching to the involved partners.* In other cases, one or both partners may need to transfer to another store.”

So essentially it’s management discretion, but as long as it’s not causing issues you can work at the same store

(And before this paragraph, it says that for management (ASM and above) and nonmanagement partners, one or both will HAVE to transfer or be separated if a transfer isn’t possible)

Fair enough. I was just giving anecdotal examples from the two locations I’ve worked at on opposite ends of the US. Seems like when it comes down to it enforcement of the rules is always in the hands of SMs and DMs.

it’s policy. a ssv is in charge of the floor and there becomes favoritism when you don’t want to upset a friend. you start letting them do what they prefer first and asking everyone else second.
