New SSV, need clean play advice! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by NocturnalNight03
Hey all, I recently got promoted to SSV after being a barista for 2 years. It's been great so far if not a little overwhelming. I almost exclusively opened as a barista, so I'm a bit out of my depth when it comes to closing and especially clean play. To put it simply, I never did clean play as a barista and my first ever time doing it was with my manager, but she only really showed me how to do the monthly cleaning on the ice machine.

My question is: are there any SSVs out there that have some advice for a newbie? I want to lead my team confidently, but it's hard to delegate tasks when I don't even know how to do half of them. I guess that part takes practice and I know most of the cleaning instructions are in the DRB or SCEMM.

I guess what I'm really looking for is advice on time management? What tasks should I be prioritizing? Which can wait an extra week if we have an especially busy night? How do I balance my regular closing tasks with the clean play tasks?

Thanks in advance!

I haven’t done a clean play in years but I do know that all the tasks have QR codes apparently where it brings you to a video and shows you how to compete the task! Also, clean play is scheduled after your normal business hours, so don’t worry about balancing the closing tasks.. it is scheduled like that to allow time to close normally.

Ask your SM about the videos showing the tasks, i can’t remember where to find them but I know they exist and it’s their job to set you up and make sure you are aware of all of your resources :)

If you work soon you can look on the store Ipad and go on Store Resources . That’s how I learned how to knock out half of the tasks. You just have to search up the item.
Also don’t be shy to ask the baristas who have done clean play for help. Even the other SSVs. I was asking for help too when I first started because all my manager taught me was the nitro lol.
Definitely prioritize the fridges, drains (unless these are done daily at your store), dishwasher, sinks and urns. I feel like those get super bad if we’re not on it. Especially if you’re store is high volume like mine. Ice machine also. The urns are quick, that’s like 30-40min with rinses and all. You can knock out wiping the pos area or high dusting during that time. Or even the light fixtures. When you do the dishwasher you can start the three compartment sink while it’s draining. That’s how I do it at least.
I don’t do the mop area until I’m done with the drains and floors.
Fridges is tricky. Usually at my store we have another SSV run clean play while the other closes. They stay two hours after we close. It would be best to get them done after closing but the BOH milk fridge always needs to get done. Racks and all. I would try to get that done before we get our deliveries but if you can at least wipe the bottom and sides that works too and just try and detail clean next time.
I’m not sure how your manager schedules but if you do close and complete clean play too then you should have one barista scheduled specifically for clean play. The rest are on the floor. Try and get all your tasks/breaks done like two hours/ two and a half hrs before you close. If you do it that way then the last hours could be used just for you to focus on clean play and helping the barista with CP.
