Labor cuts happen but this is unacceptable...(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by spookyboi13
I went from 25-35 hours a week to... 10-12 hours. That can't be normal... right? Last year it was like 20-25 to 15-20. And of the few partners I've talked to it seems I'm the only one getting such a severe cut!
BlacksmithOwn90865 points7m ago
I went from 24-30 down to 4-8 it’s just crazy and unacceptable
spookyboi13 [OP]28 points7m ago
holy fuck, im sorry
extrashotextrahot41 points7m ago
Me too. Down to 14hrs a week from 25-30. Can't pay my bills. Manager never completes the schedule on time so I'm looking for online work.
midgethepuff1 points7m ago
Start texting your DM every single day your SM fails to have the schedule up on time. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you guys need to submit your time off requests at least 21 days in the future, then it’s only fair you get your schedule when you’re supposed to. When I worked at the bux my DM didn’t tolerate that shit and rode my SM’s ass till she got schedules out in a timely manner.
Ssaeat32 points7m ago
Yeah I was consistently getting 30-35 hrs a week and this week I have 15 hours and next week I have 18 hours. I don't understand how I'm supposed to maintain my benefits or pay bills with the amount of hours I'm getting now. A lot of my coworkers hours have been cut as well, yet my SM is hiring more people. I just don't understand why my SM can't give more hours to the people who are already working here instead of hiring more people
mekayla9613 points7m ago
Exact same thing happening at my store. It’s so stressful
alex_of_all8 points7m ago
Same thing is happening at my partners store
SmittyComic24 points7m ago
every few years or so this happens. Always wondered if it was a ploy from higher ups to try and get the profits up, to rise their stocks and then they sell the stock and leave and we'll be back to "normal" after.
spookyboi13 [OP]15 points7m ago
ive only been here a year and a half though... im definitely not the most seasoned guy there lmao... i did find out my chronic illness came out of remission a few weeks ago but the effects going forward should be minimal once my specialists get my treatments started again...
i mean the subtle ableism at my store is rampant but this is ridiculous
drewdrop2623 points7m ago
I feel you. SSVs have all had our hours cut as well; I have completely open availability and only took the promotion so I could pay my bills. How I’m supposed to provide for my family on 29 fucking hours is beyond me. We’re all scrambling for any shifts anyone wants to give up and I’m working 6 days a week to bring my hours up. Still can only just afford bills, barely can afford food. This company doesn’t give a fuck about whether or not any of us can live outside work. It’s all about numbers, numbers, numbers
spookyboi13 [OP]12 points7m ago
jesus im so sorry, its messed up we have to fight for scraps when the company makes millions
drewdrop2619 points7m ago
Our SM today also, before handing me keys and peacing out in her Tesla four hours early, told me we needed to upsell because the company is demanding we make $8k today or whatever. I’m like, why? So some shareholders can buy a third vacation home? YOUR EMPLOYEES CANNOT AFFORD TO EAT
shipssiren2 points7m ago
Jesus christ, I'm so so sorry
Aggravating-Mess322123 points7m ago
The most recent weekly update says on the app we can make it so we can see available shifts at other stores so if you have reliable transportation that may be a way to get more hours
Lanky-Strawberry571028 points7m ago
It shouldn't have to be this way
Torirock1016 points7m ago
when my coworker has 40 hours a week (more than shift supervisors!) but some people can’t even get 12 a week so they’re gonna get fired 🤩
spookyboi13 [OP]2 points7m ago
wait do we get fired if our hours drop below 12? if so i got Words
No-City-16828 points7m ago
The technical I believe is that you have to have at least 12 hours of availability. And your SM is supposed to schedule you for at least that. If you have the availability and aren’t getting scheduled, I don’t think that can land on you.
testingaurora9 points7m ago
At least 18 hrs of availability, average of 12 hr/week on the clock.
Torirock106 points7m ago
average hours a week for each quarter has to be 12
if u work 16 one week and then don’t make 12 the next, but then do get 12 the week after you’ll be okay. you get me?
spookyboi13 [OP]4 points7m ago
okay, thats definitely a relief... ive never dealt with this, last year (different manager) the lowest my hours got was between 15-20, between 10-15 is just... putting me in a spot i dislike
TylerJ71614 points7m ago
This is why I'm quitting. Went from 32 to 19 in 2 weeks
mrsfrankenstud10 points7m ago
Yes. This is 100% about shareholders profits. They do this every year it's true but with all the unionising that happened recently you know the shareholders are singing like Canaries. This company is a brand and that's all. Some of you will consider getting second jobs. Your SM will just hire more people "to staff to store needs" and your hours will drop even more and the cycle continues another year. So if you plan on continuing your employment there expect this to happen every year for a few months. Most of this industry is like this unfortunately. Your SM is paid to staff the store. They don't care who, why, how because just having bodies there will make the company money.
spookyboi13 [OP]7 points7m ago
what's weird is last year my cut was like 20-30%, and the average cut im seeing from chatting with my coworkers is 30-40%... but now mine is 60%
im feeling a bit upset since i thought i was generally liked by my sm, and considered a decent partner, and hell ill take like 20 hours im in a privileged enough position where that cut is manageable but 10-12 hours unfortunately isn't.
oh well just makes me a bigger advocate for workers rights and stuff. a company making so much money as starbucks should be able to guarantee year round minimum hours.
also i feel it's hilarious (in the saddest way) their policies push out seasoned partners, bringing in new partners that (no offense) don't get trained as well, causing more disconnect between customers and them, which then causes more turnover because burn out and not getting paid enough to be verbally (and sometimes physically unfortunately) harassed.
tldr: we are in hell
zoidberg30001 points7m ago
It also depends on what day part you work. I when I was a store manager I had about 18 partners that only wanted to work to 12 PM. I don’t need 18 people at that time. The same for closing. I had a lot of people that only wanted to work after 4 PM due to the a.m. shifts being assholes (a whole other story) But I don’t need eight people after 4 PM.
spookyboi13 [OP]2 points7m ago
yeah, that's definitely understandable. im just personally confused with my store though since we hired like 4(?) new people for both of those day parts (ive been a closer since i started about a year and a half ago, we also have asshole morning shifts haha) but now are cutting labor. it'd make more sense to not hire until labor needs increases in february/march?
granted im just a barista, but im burnt out by not having enough money to make ends meet. im deciding to go for my masters and phd because research and academia is somehow less stressful than working here haha
zoidberg30001 points7m ago
I totally get that. Have you talked to your SM? Whenever someone came to talk to me about their hours and expressed concern. I always did my best to make sure that they got what they needed. I know managers get shit on here, but we also have managers we have to report to that are putting pressure on us to cut hours to meet these goals, and to perform in other ways.
MoMoney255 points7m ago
This aspect of the company, every year gets me so frustrated. I’m just surprised it’s happening so close to the Christmas holiday, it’s usually January.
Labor cuts are asinine, and frankly, have we seen their profit margins? It’s not right, and it’s even worse that partners have to go looking for hours at other stores. I get the need for that sometimes, everyone’s situation differs, but when you need those hours consistently for things like benefits (let alone um PAY), it’s just disheartening to see it’s still very much a company thing.
And at this time of the year?
Stay warm and hydrated friends, this is a bummer to see 🥺🤩
No-City-16825 points7m ago
Y’all need to look into borrowed partner shifts. Some people hate them, but I like working at new stores, and I usually learn something new. Like, before I worked at another store, I thought all stores used the placards from the urns to scrape the ovens.
spookyboi13 [OP]4 points7m ago
unfortunately all the shifts offered (at the moment im holding out hope) from the stores i can see are outside of my availability (i can't do early mornings for the sake of my migraines and sleep hygiene)
i did hear we're going to be able to see all shifts available regardless of being a borrowed partner there or not, which would be amazing because i love working at other stores! i have a lot of barista connections at other places, and i like learning new things.
also we have i think two(?) new stores in our area and i want to work a shift or two there because oooh shiny!! but i can't kill my sleep routine like that. but it might come down to it :'(
spookyboi13 [OP]6 points7m ago
i just wish i can make those decisions without potentially sacrificing my health (in the case of the early shifts) or done because im begging for scrap's because my hours got cut by 60%
No-City-16825 points7m ago
Hmmm… the way it works now I think is you have to ask your SM to add you to the database for a particular store and then you can see if someone puts up a shift… it would be great if we could just see anything in the area… where did you hear that? I’m also kinda spoiled I guess cause I work in midtown Manhattan and there’s like almost 20 stores in my district that are all within like 10 blocks. I also know a bunch of the SMS at other stores and they know I like to pick up shifts, so if that’s an option, get to know SMs from other stores and give them your number and tell them they to hit you up whenever they need someone.
b99__throwaway1 points7m ago
in the new weekly update there’s a way to request to add yourself as a borrowed partner to other stores so you can pick up shifts there. has to be done on the partner hours website, not the app
spookyboi13 [OP]1 points7m ago
im out right now but i just heard in was in an update(?) so im not really sure the details.
Deadrax5023 points7m ago
Did you talk to your SM about it? Probably the best way to go.
Muted_Obligation45013 points7m ago
It’s cause the greedy fat ass managers get bonuses this time of year
spookyboi13 [OP]1 points7m ago
sms and asms? or just dms?
Muted_Obligation45010 points7m ago
I wanna say it’s DMs and SMs
spookyboi13 [OP]2 points7m ago
and what do we get? nadda.
crispycokecan3 points7m ago
As a supervisor, I went from 37 to 20.75 😞
spookyboi13 [OP]2 points7m ago
god im sorry, it seems especially brutal this year.
Greedy_Bumblebee27452 points7m ago
Someone isn’t doing the job right and obviously has some favoritism at hand. I’m sorry dude I really hope that changes for ya if not I wish you luck in finding something better!!
spookyboi13 [OP]2 points7m ago
there definitely is some favoritism, im typically the first person to advocate for partners, speak up when im uncomfortable, etc. im also part of the "old guard" (aka staff hired by our former SM) who are slowly being pushed out for varying reasons.
one of my best friends, love him to death, sucks at self advocacy, but his hours only got like a 10% decrease. and our SM is trying to get him to report on issues he sees on the floor to "try to make shifts run sooner" im like "theyre trying to make you their spy..." my friends uncomfortable as heck with it, but doesn't know how to say it without losing the possibility of promotion or hours.

my friends clever as hell and knows how to play this game he's being forced into, but he shouldn't yknow?

I went from 30-35 hours to 12-14. I’m now getting a new job because I can’t even afford my bills with little hours I’m given. It’s been almost a month and a half of these hour cuts for me
DungeonPhoenix1 points7m ago
I'm a shift and went from 35+ to 18-23 🙃
Mean-Letter-17101 points7m ago
I feel your pain, this is literally me. I went from 28-30 and next week I only work 9 hours. It’s unacceptable to me, and I’m now seeking a different job. Everyone else is making 28+ hours even 38 hours. I’m the only one getting cut.
Uh_Sean1 points7m ago
LMAO me at my licensed store where I have absolutely zero help so I’m up to 70 to 75
Ew_Oxygen11241 points7m ago
Happened to me too. How do they expect me to pay my rent?
SabrinaOntheBroom1 points7m ago
Does anybody know the actual reason they are doing this though? My manager didn’t explain to us
spookyboi13 [OP]3 points7m ago
officially it's because starbucks enters their slow season after the holidays. tbf at my other food service jobs back in the day the same was true, and hours would be reduced. but both were local, small establishments not national chains lmao.
unofficially if you ask me, it's part clearing house (especially with the unionizing occurring) and part attempting to get profit margins as high as possible as they enter the first quarter. but thats just my pessimism showing
eta: i know it happens every year, before the unions but i think the severe cuts that have happened as of late are definitely to encourage more employee turnover, which can make unionizing harder
sashiyaki1 points7m ago
I went from 35-40 to 15-20 🥲
Ajskdjurj1 points7m ago
I went from average 30 to 20 but my manger sent me to another store for 2 days.
