Starbucks suspended me for defending myself against a violent customer 😡()

That is awful and it definitely sounds to me like you were wrongfully suspended. You were using self defense after having attempted multiple times to de-escalate the situation.
ItsjustQ_117 points7m ago
Exactly I followed all the rules covered in our de escalation training and they told me not to tell anyone at the store and the “investigation” going on and it feels like they’re trying to quiet fire me 🙄
badatlife1538 points7m ago
The only thing I can possibly think of is them trying to protect you from that customer while things are investigated, but it sounds super shady to me. I don’t know who to suggest you reach out to, I feel like either reaching out to your DM or I think ethics and compliance is part of the partner contact center? I really hope they are able to get it sorted out, if you are wanting that, I don’t know that I would want to return having that kind of experience and what seems like little support. :/
ItsjustQ_49 points7m ago
Definitely not planning to return after seeing how they are handling it. Called and texted my DM and store manager multiple times to get info about when I could come back and what was going on in the investigation… got no responses other than them asking for my statement for the 4th time. They didn’t even want to let me to come get my tips.
badatlife1519 points7m ago
That’s awful, I have no experience with this type of thing, but looking at rudebii’s comments, I think they offer better advice! Go make Starbucks pay for their mistake in not actually standing up for partners being harassed.
Js_On_My_Yeet26 points7m ago
Do not let this slide. This is sickening. Call ethics and compliance.
theepi_pillodu15 points7m ago
Can you recover the CCTV footage and keep multiple copies of it, before it "accidentally" gets deleted?
kpriestess1910 points7m ago
When anything is under investigation, you're told not to discuss it with any staff, as it may change the outcome and not work in your favour. I had a supervisor throw a jug at my head in front of 3 members of staff for no reason. We all reported it, and most of the staff knew about it, as the decision to investigate by head office took a few weeks. Once it was underway, I wasn't allowed to discuss it, despite other ppl being aware. Luckily manager and all the staff are great (apart from that one supervisor) and if anything related to the incident/that day was mentioned, we'd be like "we cannot elaborate further *change subject*" or " the thing we cannot discuss atm *move on*".
Elliotisnotokay1 points7m ago
I was investigated due to an issue with another partner. It is common for them to tell you not to discuss it, but it feels agonizing. I think apart of the reason is that they do reach out to other staff to get a bigger picture of what happened, and want an impartial opinion (I've been on both ends bc I was at an awful store)
LuckyPotter777102 points7m ago
Ethics. Go straight to ethics. Don’t put up with this shit. I probably would’ve done the same thing lol.
swisschalamet92 points7m ago
If starbucks tells us to throw chairs and whip canisters at customers who threaten us with violence, I think it’s appropriate to throw a headset at a customer who came for you 🤷🏼♀️ I’d call ethics and compliance immediately, see if there’s video footage from store cameras that can help your case!
mondrianna11 points7m ago
We’re fully trained to fight for our life! Like wtf!!
swisschalamet9 points7m ago
It’s sad, really. I’m more concerned about American partners and the issue of gun violence. I live in Canada and while it’s absolutely not unheard of or impossible, it’s far less likely to occur. I can’t even imagine dealing with an escalation and having to worry if or when guns will be involved. I don’t think OP did anything wrong here. idc what company we work for or what the situation leading up to this was, if someone is threatening physical violence and starts coming at you physically, acting out in self defence is both normal and valid 🤷🏼♀️
Few_Conclusion_882436 points7m ago
For everyone saying go straight to ethics, (like I really hate to be that guy) but Starbucks is not your friend. They will try their best not to help you if only to avoid a sticky situation with a customer or between a manager and a barista shift whatever. Like everyone’s instinct is call ethics but no y’all should be calling the nlrb
Few_Conclusion_882425 points7m ago
National labor relations board or something and tell them your story. At least they are supposedly unbiased and might be able to get you something more than a job that treated you like shit would be able to
doing_my_best_here3 points7m ago
Came here for this. Yes, thank you. Corporate is not your friend.
throwaway5858636874325 points7m ago
I would give a call to the department of labor—I’m sure they would be very interested to hear about this. It’s often said that regulation was written in blood for a reason. Good luck!
notashadowaccount23 points7m ago
This would be a good time to start talking to an employment lawyer
noccybutter16 points7m ago
Seconded on this.
Call a lawyer TODAY. They can get access to video footage for you. Sue the PANTS off your store.
rudebii14 points7m ago
Are you in a union store? Because this where unions are helpful.
Usually, suspensions are just for partner resources to dot all the i and t’s to separate you. Stop talking to anyone at Starbucks; management, corporate, coworkers. Grab a notepad and write a full account of the incident with as many details as you can remember. When the siren eventually terminates you, you’ll need this to fight Starbucks from everything to UE to a wrongful termination suit.
Good luck.
ItsjustQ_16 points7m ago
The store I was at wasn’t unionized and thanks I’ve typed up my statement currently awaiting their decision.
rudebii22 points7m ago
go over your notes and story over and over. Sound confident retelling it. Don't look to make your case with starbucks. if you're suspended, the siren has already decided to terminate you.
I can't emphasize enough to stop communicating with ANYONE at starbucks. even coworkers. when they sit you down to terminate you, say nothing. sign nothing. say goodbye and walk away. then get ready to fight them. if you have a strong enough wrongful termination suit, starbucks lawyers (they have loads of them) will settle with you. get that bag, fuck starbucks for not backing their "partners."
Agreeable-Apricot-1311 points7m ago
They are just tripping cause you threw THEIR headset. Fuck corp, try going to ethics like other comments advised. You completed the order and the customer stayed to harass you. I hope you get out of this bind OP
pastelldillann6 points7m ago
Ethics bestie. Fuck this shit.
Persnickety-sass10153 points7m ago
Hire a lawyer
MasterMischievous3 points7m ago
Is it paid suspension? Seems like it should be. I can maybe see the reasoning behind suspending you just because until the situation is investigated Starbucks would be legally responsible in the case you attacked a customer. Sounds like the investigation will clear tho, and that customer will be banned. Sucks you were suspended but imo you should be getting paid.
ItsjustQ_1 points7m ago
Totally unpaid and I still haven’t received any updates 🥲
AuntieRia11283 points7m ago
first of all, I am so so sorry this happened to you. You are a incredible human and you did not deserve such treatment. People suck sometimes and I am just so sorry you were the recipient of such awful treatment. Second, did you file an incident report covering everything in detail, and were there other people who witnessed the conflict who can/would speak and vouch for you? I do agree that they may be just trying to protect you, but I also want to make sure that if they do try to come at you accusatorially (is that a word?) that you have your bases covered. Ps. You are a BOSS. Keep sticking up for yourself and others 👏🏻
dazedinreverse3 points7m ago
Did anyone call the cops or was there an incident report made? Definitely sounds like a wrongful suspension but there could be those stupid technicalities
dallizzlee2 points7m ago
Call an employment lawyer
Latter-Efficiency8482 points7m ago
So sorry to hear, this doesn’t sound fair at all especially you tried best to de-escalate. Some managers still think that customers are always right. You should talk with a lawyer immediately.
darkwolf5232 points7m ago
Wtf were you suppose to do? Let her grab you? You didnt do anything wrong and yes you were wrongfully suspended. Sorry you had to go through that OP.
muhkiim1 points7m ago
Sue them
roterzwerg1 points7m ago
It always astounds me how little support these companies show to their staff. I worked for Tesco years ago and had a "customer" basically trash the place. Threw all the flowers and water buckets about, then chucked the massive outside litter bin at me. Because i asked him not to leave his bike proped up against the displays and didn't sell him a lighter that we had sold out of days ago. In addition to the physical aggression he verbally abused me. This went on for about 10 mins before i lost my rag and told him to get fucked. His aunt then made a verbal complaint and i ended up with a stage 2 warning.

Unfortunately, no matter how threatening they were if u threw something first u will be fired.
ItsjustQ_1 points7m ago
She literally was trying to grab me
ItsjustQ_1 points7m ago
I wouldn’t just throw anything for no reason
ymi2f1 points6m ago
Did she actually grab u tho? I'm heard this in court before.
