how to ask for more bar time as a green bean who is a weenie (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by livrose359
i l o v e doing bar. i understand getting pulled off sometimes and absolutely not being on when when we’re busy but my shift pulls me off after like 30 minutes or if i make 1 drink iced when it was supposed to be hot. i definitely need more practice and i wanna ace it but i don’t know how to ask for it because i’m socially a ZERO.

EDIT: i also absolutely HATE cs which is what they mainly put me on. Im ND and the task list, timer and people asking me for things while also doing front absolutely scrambled and fries me

Never say you like ANYTHING. That’s how I got stuck on drive for six months 😵‍💫

Green beans, especially during Christmas, just don’t get a ton of bar time. It’s busy, hectic, and practically no room for training or learning (most of the time). Just express youd love to get more familiar with bar and semi-frequently remind them if that leads to no result.

Good luck!

Everyone messes up drinks, even my store manager fucks up regularly. When you click in, ask where they want you at? That usually raises the question of “who is on bar”
Just make it known you don’t mind being on bar

as a fellow ND barista I FEEL THIS SM. i've been with sbux for yrs and LOVE bar but am too scared to ask for bar time on days i dont get it (and days without bar time make me sad) i wish i had some advice but i have the same issue unfortunately😭 (also CS is my villain origin story)

Personally I’m ok with CS bc it at least allows me to go in the back more frequently which is nice bc I get overstimulated during peak and stuff but I feel you

dont be afraid to be annoying. as a shift i appreciate when people tell me where they wanna be rather than just say wherever. because if you clock in and tell me youll just go wherever odds are i will throw you on cs or youll just replace whoevers leaving so as to not disrupt the flow thats already present on the floor. if you wanna be on bar tell your shift you wanna be on bar. the shifts job is to delegate the floor and give everyone the opportunity to try out different positions. if your shift doesnt put you on bar when you ask, wait a little while and ask again. if your shift gives you pushback and doesnt ever put you there after you ask a million times, they are not doing their job correctly and you can bring it up to your sm.

so again.. dont afraid to ask!!!!! push for it!!!

I have the opposite problem, I’m absolute dogshit on bar but I never get put anywhere else for some reason lol. But I agree with the sentiment others have echoed, gently reminding them that you’d like to get more familiar on bar can’t hurt!

just ask!!! im sure they will be willing to put u on there. it may take awhile before they think you’re ready to be on bar all / most of your shift, but you will get there. and ask your sm or shifts for feedback, specifically ask what bar skills you could improve, and that shows you’re willing to work harder and want to do better!! like im ~3-4 months in and they’ve only recently started giving me a lot of bar time.

idk if this is just my sm, but i asked mine for help practicing bar and she literally is scheduling training shifts for me because when i joined i only worked mornings during peak so all i could really do was dto or dtr

never be afraid to ask your shift supervisor! also, it will probably be easier if you ask after peak (or any other time it's not super busy) so your ssv will be more likely to say yes, since they probably put you on cs during peak because they dont have as much confidence in your abilities as a green bean quite yet. when it's less busy, you'll definitely be able to have more practice time, and your ssvs will be able to see your abilities get stronger so they might put you on bar more often!

honestly just ask/request you would like to be on bar sometime during your shift. The shift should be rotating everyone so one partner isn’t stuck on one position for the whole shift. You can also let it be known that you feel you need training/more support on bar. It could be an incentive for the shift to help you learn. After all you developing your skills on bar helps the whole store, not just you.
