Availability (self.starbucksbaristas)

Can baristas and shift be force to work outside of their availability? My new managers are forcing the shifts to all work opens and closes even if it’s not on their availability. Can they do that?

I think it’s a great way for an SM to be ass and risk losing perfectly good partners, but yes it’s allowed. Your availability is technically just a request and the SM can make certain availability be a job requirement.

If you are a shift and you can’t open or close than you are useless.

wait is this a thing bc there are certain shifts at my store that exclusively open and there are others that exclusively close i didn’t know all shifts had to have open hours

There are shifts at my store that primarily open or close too, but all of them do midshifts. Your availability as a shift has to technically remain open but you can still voice a preference for one daypart over the other

if there’s enough shifts at a store that balance each other out between people who prefer closing and people who prefer opening then yes, but if not you can’t just pick and choose. i believe a requirement to be a shift is to have completely open availability (but most sm’s are lenient with school and such)

the parent comment is ambiguous, tbh.

some stores (like mine) only do one turnover so you have an opening keyholder and a closing keyholder, no mid - if you can’t do one or the other, then yeah it’s not gonna work. even if your store has a mid keyholder, if you can’t open/close that could be an issue for scheduling.

on the other hand, ssv’s definitely don’t have to do both opens and closes. i don’t have opens in my availability because i’m very much not a morning person, though i was trained to open & would do it if absolutely necessary. (literally all our other ssv’s prefer opening so it’s not an issue.) we have at least one ssv who doesn’t have closes in their availability. the rest are more flexible but tend to be scheduled either primarily opens or primarily closes.

i have heard that some sm’s require their ssv’s to have open availability, but afaik it’s not a company policy, it’s not in the job description, and it’s not a thing at my store.

Oh it sounded like you couldn’t do either.

Agreed you gotta at least be able to do one

My store used to have a shift that only did mornings and never once worked a weekend in the 2-ish years she was there.
Then again my store is very lax and has about 10 partners that are only available for 10hours a week 🤷🏻‍♀️

I sure hope so. Like these partners only come in for a few hours every week or so, we see them more When they come in to use their discounts daily then on the floor 🤦🏻‍♀️
It's even been brought up to the store manager multiple times, and the district manager once for sure. Like I get these partners have been with the company for 3+ years, but clearly their lives are going in a different direction from sbux we shouldn't keep them around just to say we have long term partners?

I'd quit. I open 3 days a week and only opens has been my availability since I applied. Thankfully the chances of that being an issue are slim to none in my store since no one wants to get up that early.
