how often does your sm actually work on the floor? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by imlivinginurwall
dl032717 128 points 6m ago
My sm is great at coming onto the floor whenever we need coverage or extra help. He does let us know when he’s gonna be busy or has meetings so that’s also helpful. It’s not all the time and but we know we can always ask if we need the help. There’s maybe been a handful of instances where he’s been too busy. Just yesterday he was on drive bar for a good hour.
MLGTheForkOnTheLeft 39 points 6m ago
My SM is also a really good worker, he always works on the floor when he doesnt have meetings, and also cleans. Things like the drains, floors, coffee, and sani are always the top of his list when he is working. But idk if he really works bar much. I know he does a lot of the drive and support.
alexkerie 4 points 6m ago
mine is the same way, he’s the best
looker009 90 points 6m ago
I am former partner but the SM would be in for 40+ hours a week. She would jump in as needed be it actually on the bar, in some other position or completely in CS position. I seen her do dishes, trash run, bathroom cleaning etc plenty of time. Her saying was i might be SM but ultimately i am barista.
LuckyPotter777 57 points 6m ago
Daily… Parks herself on DTO nearly every morning…
Kitabparast 1 points 6m ago
Do you work in my store?
Next_Resolution_3889 43 points 6m ago
My SM has been a partner for 7+ years I think. He’s actually good and helpful on the floor. I feel like SM’s should have the requirement of being a barista for 2+ years.
darkwolf523 40 points 6m ago
Never
Giidget 15 points 6m ago
same here :( we don’t feel supported at all by our sm
darkwolf523 3 points 6m ago
:(
Gabe13456 2 points 6m ago
Outside hire?
Faustamort 25 points 6m ago
My current SM works on the floor at least 40 hours a week. She rocks.

The worst are SMs that get in the floor and do nothing but get in the way. Some are longtime partners who just got out of the flow, some are outside his who just never got good. Don't come on bar, make two drinks, and leave a huge mess. Don't stand in the way on the floor while talking to a customer you know outside work for 15 minutes. Behave better than a bad barista.
violentfemme17 11 points 6m ago
They shouldn’t be on the floor 40 hours a week, part of their time should be spent doing noncoverage managerial stuff like writing the schedule, inventory, meetings, 1 on 1’s etc.
my last SM put herself on the floor wayyy too much because she was more comfortable as an SSV, and it really screwed our store over. Training fell by the wayside, no *ever* knew what was going on.
New SM is phenomenal though, however, I still think she works too hard and is going to burnout and quit like so many other SMs in the company
MarieCrepes 25 points 6m ago
It's uncommon, only in extreme circumstances. I wish she was on the floor more tbh and I've heard many of the other shifts and baristas say the same.
Prudent-Pea6222 5 points 6m ago
Exactly the same for my store ):
melkorarose 23 points 6m ago
Ur sms work on the floor?? 🤣🤣

My SM schedules herself on the floor, then sits in the back the entire time she's there, and we end up short staffed. Or if she is on the floor, shes constantly in everyone's way, snapping at us, to the point where the SSVs literally have to stick her on warming just so she stops annoying everyone.

Miss girl doesn't even come out when a customer literally JUMPED at one of the shifts over the counter ready to punch her.

I blame our DM, she hosts 4 hour meetings with all her SMs, every day, for no reason..
Magicenbykat 1 points 6m ago
Lmao do you work at my store bc same 🙃🙃
mangotangoafterdark 19 points 6m ago
every day that she is scheduled except for when she’s at a meeting somewhere. she is either put on bar or cs
aysancoco 17 points 6m ago
always! i love my sm so much she's been a barista and a shift before so she's so good at her job and she makes sure to always be on the floor when possible. she's also awesome at customer connection and giving us positive feedback (: we got so lucky
skylikeslemonade 14 points 6m ago
more than 50% of the time i work :)
Creative-Clothes-520 13 points 6m ago
Every day through peak he works hard and supports us and we love him for it

my sm schedules herself for noncoverage ONLY, never on the floor, always too busy to help
iqueefkief 2 points 6m ago
awful
EyesOpenedWide31 8 points 6m ago
We are lucky if they are IN the store
Shellbean00 7 points 6m ago
My SM alternates between Saturdays and Sundays every weekend. She’s always on the floor for peak on those days. But like someone else said, she lets us know when she has meetings/calls to be in, but if we need her help on the floor I know we can ask. As a SSV who’s trying to promote I try to figure things out on my own first. There have been a couple instances where I go to her for advice and she’ll suggest herself being on the floor. There has been ONE time where it was crazy as hell, super busy, lobby + DT packed, I was going to meal violate, and we needed practically everything restocked. So I asked if she could come into the floor to take over for me while I got them what I could before I violated and she was happy to help (: I really got a good one
thechamelioncircuit 6 points 6m ago
Relatively often considering corporate made all of our shifts step down.
mochakatpuccino 7 points 6m ago
woah why!!!
lcvefoolish 5 points 6m ago
almost every day. she was main bar during peak today :) but she also makes sure everyone else who has been at the store for long enough to be comfortable with it gets to main bar during peak as well. i feel like my manager truly enjoys being a barista and does every position regularly as well as being the key holder. i’m actually opening with her tomorrow and she’ll be running the floor while training a new shift. and if we really need her while she’s off the floor, she’ll always hop on to help. we stan!
ihavemanyanimals 5 points 6m ago
Anytime she can. Its so nice. Almost every shift ive worked with her shes on the floor at least an hour
paraxutebrain 4 points 6m ago
Every day. The man is like a coach during peak.
He’s always on the ovens or CS. And shouting encouragement “LETS GO TEAM” “YOU GOT THIS” statements 🤣🤣
Dev_hour86 2 points 6m ago
This is 100% me, but I'm also very realistic.
Magicenbykat 1 points 6m ago
Okay but do you find this helpful and fun or just awkward bc I love this energy but have no idea how to pull it off 😅
perfectsizzle 4 points 6m ago
I LOVE our SM, she’s won multiple awards with Starbucks and has been managing our store since its opening 5 years ago. I work with her quite often during peak
MountainGoat999 3 points 6m ago
My new one rarely does, and when he is on the floor he is easily the weakest at bar. Outside hire, which I get, but shit is fucking pathetic. Thankfully I'm transferring soon.
willjuggleforcake 3 points 6m ago
Never. Gets super passive aggressive if we ask for help. He comes up every so often to criticize and nit pick every little thing we do tho 😑
iklno 3 points 6m ago
my previous SM was always at the store, but hardly ever on the floor. current SM is on the floor several shifts per week, depending on what we need. I prefer it this way, but I guess it would depend on your SM.

I think it’s *so* important for the SM to have a current firsthand perspective of what it’s like on the floor, especially at peak.
shesallglowedup 3 points 6m ago
Five days a week
Ann-Drogyny 3 points 6m ago
My SM is in the store all the time, and usually is on the floor during peak. Usually DT because she’s really nice to the customers, but she has also been working on her bar skills! After peak I might ask her to do the food pull, and then admin tasks for the rest of the day.
Keithxmizu 2 points 6m ago
Like, every peak. I never not see her working
[deleted] 2 points 6m ago

sad-broke-student 2 points 6m ago
my sm is actually incredibly helpful. even when he isn’t on the clock he picks up calls from work and stuff if we need him for anything. anyways when he is here he is always helping us with cleaning, support, etc. he pretty much just puts himself on cs which really helps because we’re a high volume store. he genuinely cares about all of us as employees. i know that not everyone is in that situation but i got so lucky with my manager and the rest of the teammates lol. it makes the job so much more bearable.

side note: my manager has to drive an hour to and from work every day. which makes him even more awesome.
andersonm499 2 points 6m ago
My sm schedules herself on the floor at least 3-4 times a week
She I’ll be on the floor for the first 4 hrs of her schedule and then non coverage the rest but will jump back on if we need her and she’s not in a meeting.
broke_ass_brock 2 points 6m ago
Ours typically works half of their scheduled shift on the floor and the other half doing other stuff. They rarely schedule a full shift off the floor
Ajskdjurj 2 points 6m ago
Mines on the floor Almost everyday from 7-1130 and then does her admin. There are days she’s not on the floor because of meetings.
iqueefkief 2 points 6m ago
nearly every day. i’m a shift and i closed with mine last night. he works all day parts and is the best boss i’ve ever had.

eta: our store closes at 10:30pm and we get out at 11
ghostt72 2 points 6m ago
weekday peak so 6/7-9/10am and then she always opens on Saturdays and runs the shift, occasionally picks up a close to help out a shift or something. if she's at the store doing noncov office work and we need extra hands she'll jump on. she's been w the company since she was 16 so she knows her shit.
jadehernan 2 points 6m ago
every time at the beginning of her shift she’s working with us and then handles paperwork and other stuff off the floor later on in her shift :)
yunggreat 2 points 6m ago
daily. both sm and asm are on the floor in some sort of planted position or CS if needed.
honey_bay 2 points 6m ago
they are always on the floor for peak then go do stuff off the floor in the afternoon
Praxlyn 2 points 6m ago
SM is basically a barista (unless they’re the play caller) until afternoon then goes to do normal manager stuff lol
jjd_yo 2 points 6m ago
Whenever we need it for the most part! She knows what we’re all capable of, and what we’re not. Easily the best SM I’ve had and is one of the reasons I’m not looking at other jobs right now.
stealthyninja00 2 points 6m ago
I adore my store’s sm. She has the same schedule every week unless other wise specified. She’s in store every Monday morning and is there normally at six to do admin stuff. Then on Tuesday she’s on the floor normally running the floor to give the shift a chance to be a barista for a day. Then she’s normally on the floor again Thursday and Sunday. Sunday is when she does a bit of both floor time and admin stuff.
PoppyPancakes 2 points 6m ago
She works 5 days a week. One of those days is usually a full admin day or like a district meeting day. Otherwise she works at minimum 3 hours on the floor which is typically peak and some time before/after. Other days she works a solid 8 hours on the floor. If she is in the store and not in a meeting she’s always ready to come help if something crazy happens.

My SM is pretty new to my store and a complete 180 from my old SM who used to only show up in store once or twice a week and worked less than 5 hours on the floor altogether.
FullOfHelena 2 points 6m ago
Almost never lol
GhostfaceJK 2 points 6m ago
pretty often ! she’s genuinely a great boss and great on the floor
thefrenchtoastfiend 2 points 6m ago
my sm is on the floor maximum of 2 hours a week and only if we desperately need it. the only thing he can do is stocking and "cs" (doesn't know how to make/date anything so always has to ask). he's been with starbucks for a year now and is an outside hire.

my previous sm was on the floor for most of his shifts, he was a 10+ year partner and would do any position.
canidieyet_ 2 points 6m ago
often, ours is usually on the floor with us at least 1 day a week.
cats_with_tentacles 2 points 6m ago
More than I like having her around lol but I appreciate that she comes and works with us, helps her understand our staffing needs
Boring_Peace_675 2 points 6m ago
Anytime she can
Deep_Mission_4998 2 points 6m ago
pretty much everyday, she will either be on bar or dto.
Psychorat0419 1 points 6m ago
Literally never and she’s also never in our store!!!
Kitabparast 1 points 6m ago
She spends a lot of time at DTO. But I have seen her work in-store, bar, warming, brewing, cleaning, trashes, bathrooms. If something has to get done and she can help, she’ll do it.

I LOVE working when she’s on the floor. She has a lovely, sarcastic, biting sense of humor and keeps all of us in good spirits.

icedcoffeenoclassic 1 points 6m ago
VERY OFTEN LOL
AndrewtheRey 1 points 6m ago
I’ve been gone about 2 years now, but my SM used to work on the floor every working day except when she did admin, and Thursdays she was a barista all day.
Magicenbykat 1 points 6m ago
Ours has herself scheduled for 40 hrs a week but she only comes in during peak and hides in the back on her phone or "scheduling". Even if she's scheduled herself for coverage...and we're already under-scheduled to start with so we run peak with 4-5 people on the reg now. Even if we need help I can't put her on bar because she makes too many mistakes and we have some injuries in the store so that's the position we need filled most.

It's super frustrating and she knows everyone is frustrated so she just comes in less and less, and interacts with baristas almost not at all, to the point where another SSV had to remind her to connect with partners 🙃

Funnily enough I was about to ask this same question on this sub bc at other stores I've worked at the SM either does order stuff in the back or is on DTO or DT bar the whole day. So this level of absence is just bizarre to me.
official_koda_ 1 points 6m ago
I had a nice SM, but he wouldn’t come out and help until a supervisor would practically beg him to come out…and then he would take orders or CS for like 15 mins max before going to the back again
Hungry-Hat-2195 1 points 6m ago
Our old manager would be on the floor, at reg or on bar all the time. He would also take direction from supervisors on what he needs to do! I thought that was the norm until he left and we got a new manager. He’s never on the floor…ever.
Both-Selection-5302 1 points 6m ago
We don’t have one AGAIN! My supers never leave the floor hardly except to do their work. Never leave the floor during peak
Ew_Oxygen1124 1 points 6m ago
Sometimes 1-2x a week, or once a week, or every other week, depends on admin stuff and her schedule etc.
Demonic_Witch666 1 points 6m ago
Once in a blue moon
RicTheRuler16 1 points 6m ago
Note if you do not see your SM on the floor, they’re lazy. Then again, how did they get to SM? 😂
Virgoqveen 1 points 6m ago
She appears to do DTO for 2 hours during peak and then nothing (unless she has to be the SSV for a given shift because she is driving all of her employees away)
dazedandconfusedhere 1 points 6m ago
Regularly schedules themself as coverage & goes wherever the play caller puts them! I see my SM on bar, drive thru, CS, or wherever they’re needed regularly
headsinavicee 1 points 6m ago
Lately? Maybe one shift a week. She's busy and we truly run better without her scheduled on the floor.
She will jump in though if she's in store and it's last resort.
foomeitshitme 1 points 6m ago
SM here and I don’t leave my people hanging. Had a nice compliment today that I was a very efficient and quick barista. Made my day 😃
gothlene 1 points 6m ago
never lmfao she sits in the back and watches TV
R1P2MYOUTH 1 points 6m ago
i dont think i saw my old SM on the floor one single time😵‍💫
CyzophyTacos733 1 points 6m ago
My sm is on the floor actually quite a bit, the only time she isn't, is when she has meetings, or needs to work on stuff in the back. she also always offers to cover breaks/ be an extra hand when the SSV's really need it. She really does a lot for us tbh.
Notlikeothercatmoms 1 points 6m ago
We put our SM on oven and she complained and asked to be somewhere else and then was off the floor an hour later lmao
Unbearablebarista 1 points 6m ago
Too much
Unbearablebarista 1 points 6m ago
Actually I have two- one is lovely and super helpful on the floor, the other has the worst interpersonal skills I’ve ever seen. He is a nightmare to work next to on the floor, loves to micromanage.
weerbine 1 points 6m ago
A handful of times a month
virgo4867 1 points 6m ago
my sm is on the floor for 3 hours 3 days a week. he has never made a crafted beverage nor does he know how. he barely knows how to brew coffee. so he either puts himself on warming and yells for support, taking someone off of their position, or he stands in the window and screams at everyone to move faster. he makes everyone miserable and constantly bullies partners for not being able to do things that he can’t even do. as a ssv, i have to spend that time taking care of the mental health of our partners so they don’t all walk out at once. all while having our sm undermine every decision i make. it’s terrible.
deanlover79 1 points 6m ago
My old one hardly ever did lol
hungrymuffin123 1 points 6m ago
I’ve worked with 3 different managers since I’ve been with the company, and our current one is the worst. My first manager was great about jumping on the floor and helping and even running the floor sometimes. My current manager didn’t start helping on the floor until our DM reamed her out for never doing it. Now she’ll help out but can only effectively do dto and/or window without getting in the way. And when she does end up helping cover call outs or something she then ends up days behind on the schedule.
ughaleah 1 points 6m ago
Very often but it is always chaotic lmfao
K4ybvg 1 points 6m ago
too often lol. she takes over the floor from our shifts & it gets super frustrating because she’s always changing the play around & makes our shifts feel like it’s not even their floor.
nynequbes 1 points 6m ago
I typically only have shifts that line up with them on weekends. They open a lot of mornings out of necessity because we don’t have many people who want to or can. I close pretty much exclusively so I don’t run into them often. But I know they’re working constantly.
iiiimagery 1 points 6m ago
Our old one would all the time, our new one told me shes only allowed to be on there for like, 4 hours?
justaweenie 1 points 6m ago
barely lol and if we are drowning and ask her for help she mopes, complains when you put her in certain positions or does a couple barely helpful things and then gets back off. even when she schedules herself as coverage, she tries to weasel her way off the floor to do whatever. she’s constantly “working on the schedule” for someone who can barely keep the 3 weeks of schedules up.
No-Analysis-1813 1 points 6m ago
Only when we’re super short staffed and they only do dto
Avoni_C 1 points 6m ago
She works a typical 40 hour week so at least once a week she assigns herself floor time. More if it's a busier week or if she knows there's an event that'll cause us to be busy. She's pretty cool!
em_laurenn 1 points 6m ago
Every dang day thank goodness
Cryptic-Barista525 1 points 6m ago
Mine supports our team well in the mornings either on window or oven! Anytime we’re unable to grab front she goes and helps customers there
S50013563g9 1 points 6m ago
my SM is constantly on the floor, she’s a great help but sometimes i‘ll think “alright let’s get you on your break or on your admin work because you’re just in the way”
Euphoric_Ad1240 1 points 6m ago
Honestly maybe twice a week. She manages 2 stores an hour apart so I’m just glad she’s here at all.
realnewtgeiszler 1 points 6m ago
Only to put herself on DTO and drive our customer scores into the dirt and then leave the shift a disaster as she sits in the back or the lobby and doesn't manage the shift she scheduled herself to manage. She loves to eat our coverage hours by saying she'll be on the floor and then not fucking working <3
ZaftigZephyr 1 points 6m ago
My current sm works on the floor every day and will come back on the floor if we need help. My previous sm almost never came on floor and when she did we were all miserable.
lanastan4everlolz 1 points 6m ago
Rarely, only when we need coverage
spensyr 1 points 6m ago
About 20 hours a week out of their mandatory 40 hrs (I have 2 SMs). They're both flexible and I can trust them on about any position, including both bars!
Round-Teach9270 1 points 6m ago
Yalls SM actually works on the floor? Mine just schedules herself on the floor for 6 hours but only stays for 45 minutes then has to get off to “prepare for this meeting” 🙄 she’s trash
grungelover03 1 points 6m ago
Basically never lol. Been at the same store for 2 years, seen 2 SM’s come through and none of them ever get on the floor. I think I can recall two times, one for each SM, when they actually came to help us and even then it was super unhelpful. I thought it was odd because both were in the company for like 5+ yrs as baristas before they came to my store, so they knew how stressful it is when understaffed. I’m starting to think that it might be a store thing because we’ve had two official SM’s and then a few temporary ones and they all always end up leaving the company after working at our store lol..
okilanlosan 1 points 6m ago
I work at a cafe only store. My store manager won’t hesitate to jump on the floor. But once she gets there, it’s constant anxiety and panic seeping from every pore of her being. And it pours into the shift leads who take it out on us baristas.

Strange thing is that the store manager herself is nice to us, but I can tell that she pressures our shift leads to coach us or bring up any concerns sooooo
TinyBeanBabey 1 points 6m ago
since I transferred stores, I've seen my sm on the floor once. I haven't seen her in the store at all most of the days I've worked. when she's there doing admin stuff, she leaves to another store partway through her shift
dallizzlee 1 points 6m ago
30 min to and hour, most days she’s there.
wifflefiffle 1 points 6m ago
almost daily! she is usually on register/warming for a good while throughout her shifts :)
Sure_Kiwi3037 1 points 6m ago
All the time!
Successful-Regret-76 1 points 6m ago
She only ever is on warming for maybe an hour max lol
anonymous6248 1 points 6m ago
almost everyday, even if it’s only for a few hours.
Sabo9316 1 points 6m ago
My SM works on the floor at least three days a week (she schedules 40 hr weeks and uses Mondays for Admin and Wednesdays for York/weekly orders when someone else isn’t available.)
[deleted] 1 points 6m ago
[deleted]
Nalin90 1 points 6m ago
Very rarely but we also rarely are that desperate for help. She also is a terrible barista (she's an older lady) so all she can really do is ring.
Aggressive_Hand7769 1 points 6m ago
Like once every couple of months when my DM comes to our store and then once he leaves she goes straight to the back
Aggressive_Hand7769 1 points 6m ago
Like once every couple of months when my DM comes to our store and then once he leaves she goes straight to the back
editing to mention that she also doesn’t know how to order take or make drinks so she just hovers around/is in our way for most of the time
Late_Pomelo_999 1 points 6m ago
Every shift at least for 30 minutes
stfuthomas 1 points 6m ago
My sm is never on the floor. But every time I go to the back she’s on Spotify and Instagram and telling us “No red cars”
photo_rain 1 points 6m ago
Ummm if we are lucky she is there for peak on the floor but only will do dto and we have to grab all mobile orders etc
majik_rose 1 points 6m ago
My sm has also been managing like two other stores around town (idk) so he’s hardly ever at our store. I don’t typically work with the asm but I definitely have seen him work the floor before, like during peak.
Material-Youth6856 1 points 6m ago
we have a temporary store manager and she’s amazing and works on the floor whenever she isn’t in meetings. our actual store manager however, only comes on if we have too many call ins and we can’t function, which is almost never.
catgirlmunist 1 points 6m ago
Most days that she's in she spends at least some time on the floor. Especially in the evenings since we tend to be short on coverage then.
