My coworker hates me (new start), I don’t know what to do. (self.starbucksbaristas)

I just started working at a coffee shop about a month ago - part time weekends so far, but sometimes weekdays, like today. I get along really really well with all my coworkers pretty much and have made friends, and have gotten almost zero complaints from anyone so far, usually it’s minor things but when it comes to customers and coffee, I’m good because I have previous experience, including latte art.

This girl and I worked a closing shift today - just the two of us. Throughout the shift she berated me for working too slowly, she’d ask me to pour something and if I picked up two bottles, thinking to finish the one we already were using she’d say something like “oh my GOD you’re slow”. Keep in mind, this girl and I have worked together before and I’ve experienced no qualms with her before. If I asked a customer if they wanted water with ice with a line, she’d say “oh my god hurry up”, because doing so takes longer than just giving them water plain. She’s a barista and I’m a barista, she is not in an official position to tell me to do anything and she’s been working for about 7 months. I’m not too familiar with closing procedures yet, I’ve had 3 previous closing shifts so far with no issues, but the last one was over 2 weeks ago, but usually I’m on dishes, because it’s what I’ve been told to do. My manager has told me to take middle shifts and has put me on them. Eventually, after seeing her roll her eyes and generally be rude I told her “if you have an issue with me take it up with the manager or the SS”, to which she replied she would take it up with the store manager. I gravitated to getting all the dishes done and she didn’t say anything at all. We finished 15 minutes past original time, but she finished with her tasks around the time I did - maybe I should have helped her more and we we would have finished earlier but she also didn’t show me how to do things, no one has properly shown me how to do things except maybe once. I don’t want to be on bad terms with anybody, I really like this job and need to keep it, I can’t afford to change.

Should I take this up with the store manager or wait til she approaches me?

take it up with the manager. be the first to speak up and tell your side of the story because your coworker could totally spin things the wrong way and make you out to be the bad guy first.

this girl seems too unreasonable to be able to have a peaceful conversation with about their behavior. i'd stay away from that to avoid a bigger issue

Definitely speak to your manager, but tbh she sounds like a bitch

It’s definitely not a you problem…she sounds like a nasty person. I suggest telling the SM about the behavior before she gets a chance to. I’m curious, does she say things like that to other people? Or does she turn around and act all nice towards others?

Hi, she’s super nice to other people but she’s also been nice to me in the past - we were understaffed because lots of people called in sick and the store manager had told her in advance that we might be a bit late closing because I’m new, so she was told that might happen. I talked to the store manager this morning and she said she would talk to her about being nice to people. We’ve been working today together and things have been going fine. I got no complaints from anyone. Thank you ❤️
