have any of y’all sold these cups?? none of our customers want to buy them bc it’s $70 including tax 😭 (i.redd.it)
submitted by Visible-Caregiver-31
bellamythos 262 points 6m ago
I have personally sold two … and seen them both returned within a week 🙃
bloop_405 71 points 6m ago
I don't get why people buy Starbucks cups. I can understand some like the metal ones that hold temperature but even then those only last a few hours before they go cool.

But I see people go crazy over the "spikey" plastic ones which are literally just plastic cups that don't even hold temperature and can really only do cold drinks. I know some people at my work who have spent hundreds on them and I can't stop thinking for the price of one of those cups I could get a Yeti cup that will hold the temperature of a drink all day 😦
bellamythos 45 points 6m ago
i mean, with this specific cup the main point is the free coffee (terms and conditions apply); both of our sales were to regulars who come in almost daily for brewed coffee.

I made sure to explain said terms and conditions before they paid, of course, but I’m told (I wasn’t on POS when they came in for refunds) that they either didn’t realize or didn’t want to wait for January to get their free coffees.
Implicitly_Alone 5 points 6m ago
Can you explain to ME the terms 😂😅
BuyerOk6692 7 points 6m ago
it’s basically like free refills for all of january if you have this. same rules apply as the normal free refills so only coffees and teas but they don’t have to pay for their first cup of the day they can just come in any day any time with this and get a free cup of coffee or tea. i’m not sure about the conditions
Pillsburyhoeboy19 13 points 6m ago
Who needs a drink that will stay the same temperature for an entire day. If I pour a drink it's gone within 30 mins 🤷‍♂️ but also I only have 1 spikey cup and it's the glow in the dark green one because the starbucks inside a safeway had it on sale for $4
caaakebaby 3 points 6m ago
Some people have long commutes to work.
Lejeune68 1 points 6m ago
Also the glow in the dark one is sick
Carsatan 1 points 6m ago
Tbh I like super insulated thermos coz I can guarantee my ice water is going to stay super cold (but I also work in a super hot kitchen and am constantly drinking water)
Pillsburyhoeboy19 1 points 6m ago
Yea the kitchen I understand I used to work a lot of kitchen jobs too and had the double quart container setup 😂
the_coffeegirl 1 points 6m ago
I have a collection of the plastic ones at my sister's that are holiday(Christmas or Halloween) themed. Because she breaks cups all the time and these are also easy to carry in your bag without extra weight when you're going out for the day and the glow in the dark ones can be found when they disappear under beds or whatever...
Pillsburyhoeboy19 3 points 6m ago
The Glow in the dark is great for playing video games in the dark and not reaching over and knocking over ur drink lol. Main reason I got it.
Foucaults_Boner 12 points 6m ago
Because the spikey ones are pretty 🥺 I thought about getting the green one that’s on sale now
sp00kygiirl 2 points 6m ago
the spikey ones are pretty and i will absolutely keep buying them regardless of what anyone says about them lmao
happyzeb 8 points 6m ago
i get them with the points i rack up, put candy and a gift card in them, and then give them away for christmas and birthdays. it's a pretty easy present
sir_ramen 2 points 6m ago
Not to mention for most of them (all of them?), you can just go to $1 or similar and order the same cup without the logo or with whatever you want on it.

Also the spiky plastic cups cost them less than $0.80.
eliettgrace 1 points 6m ago
i don’t understand. they’re cheaply made, they’re not cute, they don’t keep your drink hot/cold. 5 below sells almost the exact same cups just without the logo. i dropped a few one time from like 2 feet up and they were completely broken
Calsan1 148 points 6m ago
My store got 4, and sold out because we're by a hospital and there are doctors who come in legitimately every day for their drip coffee, so they're just prepaying for January's caffeine.
[deleted] 72 points 6m ago
[deleted]
unforg1veable 2 points 6m ago
Hi… I’m just a consumer that lurks on this sub… would you mind explaining this promo to me?
drewdrop26 18 points 6m ago
The idea is that you are pre-paying for all the drip coffee you’ll get in January. It works only for one grande drip coffee, ice coffee, or hot or iced tea per day. Since a grande drip is $2.95, this cup lets you save about 70¢ per day. You need to use the cup for a minimum of 26 days in the month of January 2023 to make the cup worth the expense.

Edit: This math is assuming the drip coffee prices don’t go up in January. Which they very well might.
unforg1veable 3 points 6m ago
Ok cool thanks!
josiechamp 2 points 6m ago
If you buy this cup for $70 you get free drip coffee refills for the month of January
wifeypoopoo 95 points 6m ago
And they’re only good for a month, right? 🙄
Malachite_Migranes 75 points 6m ago
It sucks because I think the cup is a beautiful color. Just no way I’m paying that much for it.
oryxii 6 points 6m ago
If you wait they’ll prob discount it if your store has extras and it’s halfway through January, which is what usually has happened in the past in my district. My old cafe store would always get a lot and we would sell about half to our daily pike drinkers. The other half would get discounted in January by a significant amount and then further discounted once Jan ended. This will of course depend on how many your store has and how many are left :)
ArielPotter 6 points 6m ago
This is my favorite cup color but I absolutely refuse.
Training-Bed3827 2 points 6m ago
check your target stores that have starbucks inside. I got one 70% off today
trbpanda 40 points 6m ago
nope lol not one
Traditional-Emu-1403 29 points 6m ago
Are milk and syrup even free or just the basic coffee?
highoffxansiana 15 points 6m ago
just the drip coffee i believe
krty98 13 points 6m ago
Drip coffee does come with up to 4 ounces of a milk of your choice. I can’t remember if alt milks are free, though. Things like sugar, the Splenda, honey, and agave are free, and maybe classic.
emmymariex 15 points 6m ago
4 ounces of an alt milk would be free yes! Classic syrup is not free in drip coffee, but anything that comes in a packet is!
krty98 4 points 6m ago
Thanks for the clarification! I’m a former partner and now in an entirely different field so things are starting to slip out of my mind
pinkingtion 29 points 6m ago
i get the same face every time. 😬
thechrismonster 1 points 6m ago
I make the face before they even get to
zrpeace19 28 points 6m ago
i have had multiple people pick these up and try to buy them before being horrified by the price (they didn’t know about the january stuff and weren’t interested)

one woman i legit stopped it bc i thought i scanned the cup twice or even three times for that price
greenChainsaws 19 points 6m ago
if my DM wanted these sold she wouldve told my SM to have baristas coached on how to sell these. i havent sold a single one and will not be bothering to try.
cora388 17 points 6m ago
i literally love the color and lid, it’s just… for $70 and the rules written on the side? i’ll pass
[deleted] 13 points 6m ago
[deleted]
Faustamort 18 points 6m ago
Barely, and that's the damn problem. They were $30 when they released in 2013, then $40 up to 2020 (don't think they existed in 2021). $70 is 75% inflation over two years! That's insane and clearly overpriced considering how many are still on shelves.
pleasedontusemyname 5 points 6m ago
IF
cvpocoffee 13 points 6m ago
It’s 91cad here and my store sold 2, unless they were returned to a different store
swisschalamet 12 points 6m ago
the shitty thing is if you bought the cup and then went to get a coffee every single day in january you’d still be over paying by almost $2. a grande drip at my store is $2.89 canadian so 2.89 x 31 = 89.59 💀💀
[deleted] 1 points 6m ago
[deleted]
teachaikovsky 4 points 6m ago
$89.59 is how much they’d spend if they just bought the drip coffee every day instead of buying the cup
[deleted] 1 points 6m ago
[deleted]
pleasedontusemyname 12 points 6m ago
Can’t even use your discount
shosh_c 1 points 6m ago
No, but you can use stars to knock $20 off. I did that when I bought it for my dad. Most expensive tumbler I’ve ever bought lol
skylikeslemonade 11 points 6m ago
why would anyone want that lmfao if you do the math it’s not even a deal
Pylon-Cam 7 points 6m ago
I mean…if you go to Starbucks on a daily basis and order iced coffees/cold brews, it would be a deal.

Assuming $4 for an iced coffee, you’d have to go to Starbucks 20 times to recoup your money (and you’d get a free cup out of it, which would normally be $20-$25 on its own).
Perfect-Leadership58 8 points 6m ago
i believe it’s just for hot drip coffees or hot teas /:
VictorianLibra22 7 points 6m ago
Iced coffee/tea is included too actually
skylikeslemonade 4 points 6m ago
literally doesn’t apply to cold brew
skylikeslemonade 3 points 6m ago
so you pay $2 a day for a grande pike right. 2x30 = $60. so i guess you get the cup for $10? it’s not that great of a deal
cush4 6 points 6m ago
Our coffee in Il is 3.54 haven’t seen $2 in years
skylikeslemonade 1 points 6m ago
our brewed pike is $2 or $2.50
Assiqtaq 10 points 6m ago
They are ugly, and not worth $70 imo. I don't think they are selling at all.
Responsible_Snow7109 9 points 6m ago
We sold out at my store lol idk if the people got it for themselves or as gifts but yea we sold out of em like 2 or 3 week ago. I personally havent rung anyone up for it. I think my manager is the one that did and our DM got us a catering hoagie tray. Lol why do baristas always get food out of these type of situations while the higher ups all get bonuses of some sort probably....like with customer connection scores we get a pizza if we get high numbers. Or I've heard others say they get pizza or some other food when their Drive times stay at a good number for a period of time
HamiltonPolka 9 points 6m ago
Because it’s relatively cheap and corporate and DMs still think you’re children and that a pizza party is incentive
Responsible_Snow7109 4 points 6m ago
Lol do they think thats guna make us work ourselves to death with customer connections and keeping times down at the same time? We may as well do a field trip to Chuck E cheese lmao
maddogracer161 8 points 6m ago
previous years cups were actually pretty...or at least had a design on it. this...looks so plain and simple and no where near worth the price.
SupaFugDup 7 points 6m ago
My licenced store is selling them for like $40 usd, and it's still not selling.

Been looking pretty hard at it for a Christmas gift
MaintenanceEasy744 7 points 6m ago
I really like the cup itself but not for 70 bucks even with the discount smh
Visible-Caregiver-31 [OP] 5 points 6m ago
they keep sending it to us so my SM keeps trying to get us to convince the customers to buy it bc it’s taking up space in the back but no one wants it LOL
PluralPaul 4 points 6m ago
These cups should have a built in barcode or qr code so they can be used for free coffee every January instead of just 1.
If we actually cared about being "eco-friendly", we wouldn't expect people to buy a new cup every year for one measley month of free coffee
CamdenF 4 points 6m ago
We sold 6. Just hit up the early morning crowd that comes in every day for a venti drip. Boom.
dayahorne 3 points 6m ago
I had someone steal one...does that count lmao
diarrheajar 3 points 6m ago
Damn, I haven’t sold or seen anyone sell one, but I had no idea they were $70!😭
JibJab1994 2 points 6m ago
I've only seen one sold. I get it. Basically the deal is buy 31 coffees and get a free cup. You have to come in every day and wait to get your coffee. Not a great deal for the average person.
drewdrop26 2 points 6m ago
Nope! Our three on display are coated with dust.
M1ntedrose 2 points 6m ago
I sold 3 to the same man that paid with 30 gift cards under different names. I told my manager it seemed scammy and she told me to do it anyway
byleths 2 points 6m ago
my store got like ten of these and they sold right away…….. i don’t get it. at least the past years designs were decent this looks nothing like a damn $70 to me lol
sammieduck69420 2 points 6m ago
i mean… *IF* i were to get brewed coffee every day otherwise and planned to get a tumbler, maybe i could justify it. but otherwise, i don’t even want to attempt to justify ir
cush4 2 points 6m ago
Yes ours sell out when they come in. We have lot of customers who drink coffee 7 days a week. They see it as a cost savings. They would be spending the 70 anyway so essentially the cup is free and they saved a min of $30.

There is no value to anyone buying as a gift for someone else
KyleLawes 2 points 6m ago
Sone guy came in, bought one minutes after it was placed on the shelf and returned it a few days later. That same day, or maybe the next, a woman came in and bought them all. We had 4 or 5 I think.
MaintenanceEasy744 2 points 6m ago
My store has sold,,, one 😭
oliviar0403 1 points 6m ago
had one man come in and buy this. He wanted to use it immediately but I had to tell him it’s against policy to use it right when you buy it bc it is technically not clean
snarky_fireball21 1 points 6m ago
I sold 7 to one person. And yes it was over 500
hopefultransfer2022 1 points 6m ago
I just sold one of those today!
ShakePuzzleheaded228 1 points 6m ago
I’m a SM and we got auto shipped 2. I work at a licensed store and my boss said I’m allowed to keep whatever cup I want… so I took one and gave it to my dad who drinks regular brewed coffee😂😂😂 the other one went to the owners son. So sold technically 0….given away on the other hand…. Technically 2 lmao😂😂
Ok_Sprinkles6692 1 points 6m ago
I shockingly sold one today! I tried to hide the shock on my face as I rung it up. LoL
got_the_suckers 1 points 6m ago
I haven't seen one sold but our baristas at our store pitched in money for a regular to get them it for Xmas, because he gets a tall pike everyday and gets us Xmas presents sometimes.
JustKam347 1 points 6m ago
Literally same! I almost had a lady buy one then I rung it up and she said “oh uh un” 😂
uglyleen 1 points 6m ago
today had someone ask me and my coworkers why it cost so much cause she was curious … i didn’t know why and was shocked and the other 2 of my coworkers (and sv) was both shocked and was like i have no idea it’s so wild how expensive it is ..
madisonla 1 points 6m ago
Yeah. We have 🙄 just like one or two tho
vanilllacakez 1 points 6m ago
I’m sorry ? $70 for what?
Suspicious-Fuel8813 1 points 6m ago
That cup sits on our counter as a joke 😂
mommymary 1 points 6m ago
I really wanted to get one for my mom since she drinks black drip coffee all day every day, and when I got her the refill cup three-ish years ago she’d get multiple fills a day and they didn’t care lol.
BUT we don’t get a discount, which is insane considering the last time they sold these they were like $45, and the cup is just terrible quality. Like it dents, scratches, shows oils from hands, etc. It’s just awful. You’d think a $70 cup, even with free refills, would be better quality, but no.
ggdabs 1 points 6m ago
We had four and we sold 3
kitkat828 1 points 6m ago
We sold all 6 of ours over the course of a few weeks! We had 2 left and a lady bought both of them! 64.95 ea (+tax)
mjooyeon 1 points 6m ago
My store is smack dab in the middle of a retirement community and we have tons of regulars who get only drip every day. we’ve sold over 5 at least.
OMGitsJewelz 1 points 6m ago
It sounds dumb but if you do the math it's basically the cost of all the coffees for 30 days. Essentially, the cup is free.
zeeenithhh 1 points 6m ago
We sold all but two. We have a lot of black coffee drinkers though lol
xthefabledfox 1 points 6m ago
We sold all of the ones we had at my store
_coca_cola_cherry_ 1 points 6m ago
It's $70?? I was wondering why no one has even looked at it when our store sells stons of merch
Particular_Youth101 1 points 6m ago
Literally sold one today and had to ask the guy if he was sure☠️
Papaogre714 1 points 6m ago
Do they come with free coffees for a month?
potterlyfe 1 points 6m ago
I remember one of the first years starbucks really pushed the multiple new design tumblers for christmas, they also came out with some Swarovski crystal tumblers that were like $150. Man I think every single one of them ended up being clearanced out at the end of the season. They were ugly and like who really wants crystals on their cups?
extrashotextrahot 1 points 6m ago
I sold one 🤙🏻
yaboiblackcheeseboi 1 points 6m ago
I had one barista buy one and that’s it
Purple_Coffee653 1 points 6m ago
We are trying to move these specific cups today as part of a holiday bingo or whatever fun twist of crap corporate can think of. For the pass three days it's been purely 1LB home coffee push.
kaynist 1 points 6m ago
not a single one lol
vkapadia 1 points 6m ago
Those include free coffee in Jan thought right? If you already get a coffee almost every day, could save money and get a decent cup out of it.
[deleted] 1 points 6m ago
[removed]
AndrewFan0408 1 points 6m ago
I got people ask for it and got mad because we are all out. and I also got people buy 4 of these cups and ask me to put them in a cupholder.
broke_ass_brock 1 points 6m ago
I literally just sold our store's first one yesterday lol
eliettgrace 1 points 6m ago
nope, still got them. i’ve seen people pick them up and put them down when they saw the price
putridfairy 1 points 6m ago
I've personally sold six in drive thru
Ajskdjurj 1 points 6m ago
I sold one to a customer who always gets a hot tea. She gets 2 a day so I told you to get one free and then just do a refill since she stays in the store. It’s good for a free hot coffee/iced coffee or hot tea/iced tea. If I had a Starbucks close to me I would buy it since I get iced tea almost everyday from Dunkin’ I would just go to Starbucks
ad9581 1 points 6m ago
When people comment when they sell or dont sell I wish Id know what state or county they are from. I'm only around in the afternoons so I don't really see anyone even ask about them. I work just outside the loop in Chicago.
NoCheekBones 1 points 6m ago
I bought one! My store (licensed- Target) had a spend $25 get $5 off deal, plus I redeemed my 400 stars, plus my target employee discount of 10% off and another 5% off with my red card. Ended up costing me just $30 for a good Christmas present
Both-Selection-5302 1 points 6m ago
Wtf! No. Why is it so expensive? What’s special about it?
Professional-Cat393 1 points 6m ago
Free tea or brewed coffee the whole month of January
Both-Selection-5302 1 points 6m ago
I don’t remember the price last year. I’ve been here almost six years.?I think it has doubled
SiriusSprinkles9 1 points 6m ago
I calculated it out. If you got a grande coffee every day for January, it comes to $103. If you buy the cup it’s $90 with tax (In Canada). You’re essentially getting 5 coffees free.
Poke_Lost_Silver 1 points 6m ago
Our kiosk was sent 6 and we haven't sold a single one.
Hazel_is_Trans 1 points 6m ago
I convinced people to buy them
smexy_rat07 1 points 6m ago
my store sold out lol
Pippy575 1 points 6m ago
Ours sell out as soon as they come in the door and we get people that come in looking for them a couple of times a week.
burntsriracha 1 points 6m ago
if you read the tag they get a free coffee or tea through the whole month of january which in reality would save like 30-40 bucks if you actually use that
ShinyLittleBug 1 points 6m ago
I remember back in the day when we had these AND the latte cups (they were like $120 for a latte every day in January) and we would sell out in like the first few hours of being open on launch day….
thefrenchtoastfiend 1 points 6m ago
my store sold 2, to one person. I was shocked when the total was 180 and thought I scanned it too many times by accident
voldys_moldy_witch 1 points 6m ago
Our store got like 4 in and we sold all of them
voldys_moldy_witch 1 points 6m ago
Our store got like 4 in and we sold all of them
Fun-Reference3618 1 points 6m ago
Had 8 sold them all had to really emphasize the promo behind the price
AuntieRia1128 1 points 6m ago
Are they 30% off this week? Also, if you come for a plain hot coffee every day, it pays for itself in about 2 weeks… but the $70 up front is definitely scaring people away
Ceramicusedbook 1 points 6m ago
They're 90 after tax where I am 😂 There's no way.
Mewlover23 1 points 6m ago
Not sure about the others in my store, but I somehow sold two.
franglaisedbeignet 1 points 6m ago
I have a question. If someone brings in the cup, do we still have to ring in the free coffee for inventory purposes? How would it be done? Or we just fill it and send them on their way?
gingergal-n-dog 2 points 6m ago
You ring in the order and apply the code printed on the cup for the discount. It covers the cost of the base drink (hot & iced coffee and tea). They can add shots, flavors or foam for extra.
franglaisedbeignet 2 points 6m ago
Ahhhh okay. That’s very helpful.
thedevvylee 1 points 6m ago
I feel like w would still have to ring it up since we ring in refills. They might add a button for it 🤷🏽‍♀️ my store never tells us anything
Necessary_Low939 1 points 6m ago
… wow.
eatingisntfun 1 points 6m ago
ive only sold one
gabby24681 1 points 6m ago
2
jesijinx 1 points 6m ago
I sold one, but the guy really liked the cup and doesn’t like the brewed coffees or teas.
MatchingColors 1 points 6m ago
We keep selling them, probably 6 we’ve sold so far
Kaluskydrak 1 points 6m ago
We got 12, have 2 left 🤷🏼‍♂️
loki8675309 1 points 6m ago
I sold 4 in one order today. But no others until then.
