Im so tired of coin tips. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by crazycocopuf
Is there any way to stop receiving my tips in fucking rolls of coins? Half the time when I spend them, (which yes, I’m broke enough to need to spend them) its WRONG. Tons of Canadian coins and sometimes the roll is straight the wrong amount. ALWAYS SHORTED, never over. Its stupid and could be solved with selling our coins back to the store.

I’ve never heard of any store that gives out tips in rolled coins. Maybe bring it up with your district manager but other than that I’m not sure what to tell you based on the tip policy.
crazycocopuf [OP] 16 points 6m ago
Im very sure my district manager does not give one flying eff about my tips. Maybe the coins would be more valuable in a sock that I can knock myself out with.
cvpocoffee -8 points 6m ago
Or reload your sbux card using your tips at the POS?
crazycocopuf [OP] 17 points 6m ago
Why would I give this company my own money I earned?
Ordinary-Theory-8289 10 points 6m ago
Who tf is using their tips to reload their Starbucks card when you work here and get free drinks? OP said they need their tips. I’m assuming they meant for grocery shopping or gas. Not fucking Starbucks lol

Canadian partner here that also receive tips in rolls of coins. I got a plastic container where I dump them
still in the pastry bag it was put it and there they shall stay until I get my lazy butt to bring them to the bank.

Policy is to use the money we actually got in tips, not swap out for bills in the safe :/ My store follows policy and it sucks.

OP you can be a hardass about it and tell your manager you're owed money EVERY time a coin roll is wrong :)

The first store I worked at always gave me rolls of quarters with my tips. It was infuriating and I was happy to learn that wasn’t the standard when I transferred.

i've been at 3 stores and am shocked to find at the comments that getting rolls of coins isnt normal😵‍💫 i usually take them to the bank for cash and they dont normally unroll them to count😅
RosieHarlan 9 points 6m ago
Technically that is the correct policy that isn’t followed in many places. Tips must be paid out with money that was put in the tip jar, not from money that’s in the safe.
skylikeslemonade 4 points 6m ago
yeah i always get coin rolls i just save them for a couple of months then head to the bank

I was told by my ASM that we are not allowed to cash in coins for larger bills when it comes to tips. And trust me it sucks just as much for use having to count out all those fucking coins as it does for you receiving them. (Not to mention for our cafe tip jars we are not allowed to keep bills in them, so they get broken down into coins 😩)

If the amounts in the rolls are always wrong, I would bring it up to your managers. Maybe they need to rethink the partner that's counting tips 🤷🏻‍♀️
AndrewtheRey 4 points 6m ago
If your bank is nearby, or any bank for that matter, they should be able to exchange the coins for bills.
Belgrifex 3 points 6m ago
I've never once seen someone pull a coin out of their tips, always dollars. You really need to talk to some upper management
Boundtoloveyou 2 points 6m ago
I frequently do the tips at my store, and in my district it is *forbidden* to change out coins for bills, either from the safe or at a bank. (It's especially frustrating because we have two banks in the same parking lot as my store.)

Partners do complain from time to time, but each time they do I remind them that I take my entire amount in coin rolls to minimize their inconvenience. I can't tell you what process what your tip counter uses to allocate the coins vs bills, but I can tell you most of us are just as inconvenienced as you and are just doing our best.

But mistakes do get made, and if the rolls are short, you should always let them know, because you are entitled to the full amount of your tips. If it were me, I would want to know that I made a goof so I could fix it moving forward.

My store goes to a nearby bank with a free coin counting machine. (Kinda like coin star, but without taking the fees). Our sm accounts for this in out noncoverage time for the partner doing tips, and obvi pays out their milage as well.

Im aware how annoying tips are- I did them for a couple of months… I’m saying its shitty the company doesn’t just let us take our tips in money the we can actually spend. I’ve had establishments literally so no- they wont take them. I’ve been made fun of for being poor in line. I think its shitty that all these grievances are out on one partner- instead of the company’s shitty stupid policy. Aren’t we “partners” shouldn’t we get some kind of say? The point is- I’m not pissed at the person who counts tips, I truly get it. I just think Starbucks finds creative ways every day to tell us that we do not matter. I just hate it here.

Coins? Never given out in my district.

Our store was told several months back that we had to hand out the rolls of coins, rather than having the shift turn them in for larger bills from the safe. Me being the person who does tips, I sent out a message in our group messaging app to see if there were any volunteers of people who were ok with or would prefer rolled coins. From that I have been able to pretty much avoid having to give rolls of coins to anyone who doesn’t want them. I will say though I do worry about the accuracy of the coin rolls. Doing tips already takes me usually at least an hour after the hour I am scheduled to complete tips, so while I carefully put them in the holders (like a plastic funnel that is measured out for the specific rolls) occasionally I think I might be a coin under I’m assuming it’s because the coins are sometimes either dirty (let me just say I have seen some GROSS coins) or because I would assume some are so worn down the coins don’t fit evenly as they should. I definitely agree with others who have said you should let your SM know, I’ve never been told there was an issue with the tips I give out, but if I was I’d be sure to make any necessary changes, I’m under the assumption no news is good news and I’m not making mistakes.

Maybe you can swap them to the safe with your SSV after you’ve gotten them. I’ve found that the people at my store that get the coin rolls are usually people that are unfamiliar to the person doing tips. Maybe get in good with the person counting tips and request bills only.
Shoddy-Trainer-8051 1 points 6m ago
I do tips for my store and I’m given coins to work with, they give me a coin sorter and I use that bc it can only be filled so much and seems about even coin rolls. I don’t know how even they are but tbh it’s not my problem, I’m not spending 3 hours again to do tips. Just give them to the bank, deposit them, they’re not going to unroll them and count them, just deposit the amount.
crazycocopuf [OP] 1 points 6m ago
No but they weigh them and its really fucking embarrassing scrambling through my purse looking for more change to replace. Im gonna quit soon anyways, it wont matter soon.
MatchingColors 1 points 6m ago
Standard policy is to divide the tips that are put into the tip jar, not to swap them out in the safe. I understand being upset about shorted rolls, but it’s odd to think you’re entitled to all bills when there is a significant amount of change in tips each week.
Best_Strain3133 1 points 6m ago
At my store they take the change to the bank and get bills.
MatchingColors 4 points 6m ago
That’s dope, I wish we did that.

I’m just echoing policy as described by my SM, not attacking anyone
Best_Strain3133 1 points 6m ago
Nah your good. I'm just baffled by people who make it into authority positions who do things the hard way cause they can u know lol
