i get excellent customer connection scores with this one simple trick (customers HATE me) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by egirlpiss
just don’t even treat them like a customer honestly. they love that. they like when you mess up and giggle about how clumsy you are like ur their buddy or some shit. they like when you use funny voices to ask if they want a straw with their drink. they especially like when you’re rude to them in a playful way. if you don’t put them on a pedestal to begin with (as i see a lot of people at my store do), they have no reason to sit on a high horse while talking to you. i sat on dto all day just making jokes with custies cuz its better than using my boring ass retail voice lines all shift. and i still kept our scores under 1 minute or something idek

but like??? in comparison, the rudest customers i’ve ever gotten are the ones i use my actual retail/customer service voice and lines on. they seem to immediately no longer see me as a human being. instantly

completely different vibes. today i told a woman i don’t know what to buy my mom for xmas (dto waiting on stuff) n i was like “like moms like candles or something right?” and she was like “well MY mom is 83 and im getting her lacy undies sooo” like yasss. go girl. i would have never gotten a funny ass response like that if i just used my customer service pre-recorded lines. sometimes i would switch to a british accent for no reason when asking ppl if they wanted straws and nearly all of them would switch to one too. i would tell people they absolutely can NOT have the drink they’re ordering, punch it in anyway, and then hear them laugh on the headset

nyway my point is treat customers like shit in a nice way. i didnt have a single mad custie today. obv some dont wanna talk but yknow use discretion of course. ex dub

Once a barista handed me my order in the drive through and said “here’s your spinach feta wap” and shut the window. I kept laughing about that for the rest of the day.

wait do you know the time isn’t connected to customer connection scores, right? the customer connection scores are done by surveys to some of the rewards members asking if their barista tried to get to know them. its not about drive times being low.
egirlpiss [OP] 11 points 6m ago
yes i do haha. but my stores been super pushing ab dto times too, so it was fun to be as polite as possible in as little time as i could
Affectionate_Fart 2 points 6m ago
Actually it’s a mix because customer connection is correlated to “satisfaction”. IE if you don’t have people waiting fifteen minutes, you might have higher connection scores due to quality and service.
clouds183 -1 points 6m ago
right but op never mentions their customer connection scores before and after and only mentions their drive times being under a minute
egirlpiss [OP] 2 points 6m ago
oh eek, def not purposeful. i just rmbred offhandedly that i was able to keep good connections n still keep times down bc i rmbr being told that was a big thing we needed to do lol

I usually just talk to my customers like normal people and tell the mean ones to go fuck themself (have a wonderful day!!!).

Works pretty well
gingergal-n-dog 5 points 6m ago
Have the day you deserve! Buh-byeee
Magicenbykat 16 points 6m ago
I do this too (just my personality and *~neurodivergence~* helping me interact with people lmao) and I've always gotten great feedback about my customer interactions! I really enjoy the custies most of the time and normally they like my sarcasm and random things, the "besties" vibe you mentioned totally is a thing! It's the *Starbucks Experienceeeee* babyyyyy
BobbyGumdrops 10 points 6m ago
So if I treat customers like human beings I get treated like a human being. Got it.
egirlpiss [OP] 5 points 6m ago
nah more like just kinda treat em like crap a little. in a nice way

i use my nice voice on dto but dtr? regular all the way. i stutter? “bro words are not my friend right now” rather then apologizing over and over
egirlpiss [OP] 1 points 6m ago
?? but maybe thats just my store
egirlpiss [OP] 1 points 6m ago
i find it almost doesnt rlly matter tbh. as long as u serve the custie in a timely n nice manner theyre just happy to go along w whatever lawl
Kitabparast 3 points 6m ago
I’m very introverted but I’m slowly getting the hang of small talk with customers.

I like to find something to comment on with old women — their name, hair, glasses, brooch, nail polish. They LOVE it. The people that like me best now are old women and cute guys I chat up.

I can see how OP’s tactics can work. Make a difference and be memorable — that makes them happy.

yeah one of my customers ordered in a british accent today so i completed their order in a british accent, it was fun and we both laughed abt it
trouble-in-space 3 points 6m ago
Personally I'm still trying to make myself get more comfortable with it so I can be like this! One of my coworkers is kind of like this and she's excellent at customer service - always making jokes and interacting with every customer. I'd love to have the courage to be the "funny" one who converses with everybody, lol. Anything to make register and bar handoff more fun 😁
egirlpiss [OP] 4 points 6m ago
it def takes time. ive been in food service for a few yrs n have had several supervisor/manager positions so im desensitized to customers atp. youll get a hang of it(:
SelocAvrap 3 points 6m ago
This is why I mobile order now lol
nezaket 7 points 6m ago
⛔⛔⛔⛔⛔no customers allowed on r/starbucksbaristas⛔⛔⛔⛔⛔
SelocAvrap 1 points 6m ago
Good thing baristas can also mobile order then, yeah? After working for the bux and learning about required "customer connections," I mobile order so I don't have to talk to people, especially people as into it as OP bc they'll *make* me talk to them

Edit: thanks for staying vigilant tho, customers definitely don't belong on this sub
egirlpiss [OP] 1 points 6m ago
it sucks cuz if it was up to me i wouldnt say anything to a customer at all but i have to have some fun w “”””customer connections””” or else it feels awkward n forced. i def leave ppl alone if they give the vibe they wanna not be chatted to but theres a ton of pressure in my store to engage customers
nezaket 0 points 6m ago
I was joking (...mostly :P), but I understand. Trader joes cashiers always try to chat with me and I'm like damn, is it because your manager is a few feet away? I will chat back but it always feels like a chore for both me and the cashier
egirlpiss [OP] 1 points 6m ago
yass love that for u. tbh mobile orders in the dto make me happy
SelocAvrap 9 points 6m ago
Wish I could've mobile ordered my comment now lmfao

Good for you! I do this on the phone with my clients if they’re cool. I told one of my favorites not to catch a charge 😹.
darkwolf523 2 points 6m ago
Ngl, I was told customers connections in the evening/ night is high. Idk what I’m doing right tbh, I’m just monotone
Suspicious-Crystal 2 points 6m ago
Are you me? Lol. Cuz same.
No-City-1682 1 points 6m ago
I like to demand ID to prove it’s actually their birthday if they order a birthday cake pop. Most realize that I’m obliviously kidding but this one woman for a split second seemed outraged lol.
jetstarxo 1 points 6m ago
my fav thing to do is “hi thank you for choosing starbucks, how’s your morning going so far?” they tell me and they ask how i am and i say, “haha not too bad, nothing to complain about yet.” they think it’s soooo funny everytime.

You sound insufferable. And please stop saying "custies".
HowardSchultzVEVO 4 points 6m ago
Tesla driver lmao
jsdod 0 points 6m ago
Sorry I hurt your feelings. Is it because you also say custie?

Looking through someone's history and drawing incorrect conclusions is not the smart comeback that you seem to think it is. I don't have a car.
