vanilla syrup in hot chocolate??(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by rjscarf
my manager told me a little while ago that he was trained (a few years ago) to put vanilla syrup in hot chocolate (1 pump for s/t and 2 pumps for g/v). is this an actual thing? i’ve been making it like that because he told me to but i’m just curious if anyone else does this.
i work at a licensed store so idk if it’s just us not following recipes as strictly or something??

the recipe was changed a few years ago
probably to save on vanilla, definitely not to improve taste!
hantnah41 points6m ago
Yeah, it was changed when the Bux put vsc or vsccf on EVERYTHING.
brokenleftjoycon19 points6m ago
Starbucks $1 and the app now list vanilla syrup in hot chocolate.
hantnah34 points6m ago
Hahaha of course they do. Huge pet peeve - they change a recipe and then a couple of years or months later, they change it back 🤣 if only they would bring back the signature hot chocolates. Ugh those were amazing
Bhaisaab864 points6m ago
The ones from 2008? Those were the BEST
hantnah2 points6m ago
Yes! Those are the ones! I’ve never been able to drink the regular hot chocolate.

the app and website are incorrect. starbucks misses stuff like this non stop. i’ve had partners who didn’t believe me until i show them the recipe card from this season. no vanilla is supposed to be in there, although there should definitely be some vanilla in there.
itsyaboimikey_-1 points6m ago
the recipe cards are often out of date. they don’t update the card in the app when they change a recipe either
Alarming_Base31489 points6m ago
recipe cards are not showing vanilla as ingredient maybe it's the vanilla that is in the whip?
brokenleftjoycon7 points6m ago
The description of hot chocolate mentions it’s flavored with vanilla and chocolate syrups. I don’t think they mean whip.
Alarming_Base31485 points6m ago
I see now
but the only vanilla listed in the ingredients section is in the whip cream. Maybe if the whip still had 8 pumps of vanilla they could say it's vanilla flavored.

WHAT

your manager should update themselves with the recipe cards before trying to correct anyone
Jew_33 points6m ago
Having ran a licensed store in the past, I can 100% confirm that you do NOT get information from Sbux when a recipe changes. We got a recipe booklet when we first opened and new cards at every season for seasonal drinks. Online, we didn’t even have recipe for VSC, which is the reason I am on this sub. I got the cold foam blender, and didn’t have any info on how to make VSC or VSCCF.

Licensed store lead currently. We get information in weekly update plus access to the beverage resource manual. I actually remember the communication about this specific change when it happened, my whole team knew/knows and it is on the cards, too.
Jew_33 points6m ago
I was a store in the WPS licensing structure. They give zero shits about the We Proudly Serve locations.
surg3v11 points6m ago
Totally valid. I’m in a Tarbucks. They almost care too much and want us to bend over backwards to be at standards when we also have Target policies we have to follow too.
Few_Conclusion_88241 points6m ago
The app says it gets vanilla
clouds1831 points6m ago
which region are you in? its not in the us version
although it does say at the bottom “steamed milk with vanilla and chocolate flavored syrups” but that bottom part just hasn’t been updated since they changed the recipe.
Few_Conclusion_88241 points6m ago
It is on my phone
Glizzysforrizzy32 points6m ago
We used to make it that way but not we just use the mocha sauce
Tabbystripes10220 points6m ago
Current recipe card has no vanilla and I think it was taken out of the recipe in Fall 2020
legallysamantha18 points6m ago
It used to have vanilla but they removed it, which was silly. It tastes like bitter death without the vanilla now lol.
Kitabparast14 points6m ago
I raised a ruckus about this. I just posted a screenshot of the app that said this.
Consensus is that SBUX forgot to update the app and website. There is no vanilla in the recipe per Store Resources and the register.
Meggilli917 points6m ago
Old recipe is superior! Vanilla belongs in hot chocolate. Without vanilla its just a mocha with drizzle
ElevatorsAreScary6 points6m ago
That was YEARS ago. In 2016 we did that for sure but not recently
NontrivialZeros5 points6m ago
252 (former) partner here. I can tell you with *absolute* authority that S/T/G had a single pump of vanilla and Venti had 2.
Just today, I ordered a grande hot chocolate with a single pump of vanilla. It will forever be the correct way.
Mnmpringles5 points6m ago
They changed it to save on vanilla during the height of the pandemic when there was a shortage on everything. They lessened the amount of vanilla in the whip as well. They may have changed it back since there isn’t a shortage on vanilla anymore but I still am not putting vanilla in it unless it’s a kids hot coco. The customers don’t seem to care
brokenleftjoycon5 points6m ago
I think it’s been changed. The app now lists vanilla syrup as an ingredient and in the description for hot chocolate. It was like that in the past and then they removed it. It’s back now.
Edit: why are y’all downvoting? It’s literally on the Starbucks $1.
jazzysoranio6 points6m ago
I just checked and you’re right. It’s listed as an ingredient again. I think Starbucks just hates it when we get too comfortable. They gotta keep changing things so that we never have the right recipes for anything.
brokenleftjoycon6 points6m ago
I saw a post about the change a couple of days ago due to the confusion. Stuff like this is why there are so many consistency issues.
bluclu4852 points6m ago
Technically on the app and the website but on our store resources it’s still just mocha

uwumoment3 points6m ago
it’s the old recipe
Gameb0i62 points6m ago
They changed the recipe. It doesn’t get vanilla anymore.
SNES1821 points6m ago
They ruined the recipe. Ftfy.
Traditional-Emu-14032 points6m ago
Best one is half and half white mocha and mocha with a little vanilla
darkwolf5231 points6m ago
I do this always.
Dry_Kale57210 points6m ago
I think they change it but I still put van in mine !! Unless the Starbucks police are watching lol
hslf0 points6m ago
Everyone is wrong. The grande hot chocolate has 4 pumps of mocha and 1 pump of vanilla. Source: $1
borrowedurmumsvcard-2 points6m ago
apparently the vanilla was taken out a while ago but my store still puts it in bc otherwise it’s nasty
Borobucks-1 points6m ago
It's still listed as an ingredient on the app though
