Question for shifts (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Kanjiung
What are your thoughts or how do you feel whenever your SM intervienes or messes around with your play whenever they’re on the floor. Personally, it bothers me a lot. I’ll have a good idea of how things are going and where my partners are but then my SM will say our drive times are slow or warming isn’t fast enough and will move people around.. it isn’t just me though cause she does it to all the other shifts and just tweaks things around to make it work for her favor in a way if that makes sense. I always ask my baristas if they’re comfortable and doing fine or if they need to switch and they all say they’re doing great. Idk it just annoys me so much cause it’ll confuse me and throw me off. It got so bad I’ve had to ask my SM multiple times who’s in charge… me or you? Idk any thoughts on this? (Sorry if it makes no sense just ranting lol)

I hate working with other managers or supervisors. I feel always feel like i’m being judged. When i go on break or lunch I find that other managers will move people around.

When I first started I would definitely get bothered by this. But I’ve learned (especially during peak), I had to figure out how to relieve bottlenecks and make things run faster. Even if every barista is feeling good, if things aren’t getting out quickly enough baristas need to be shifted around.

My SM is good about phrasing something like this like, “Do you think we should move x and y around so we can get this caught up and running smoother?”. Or similar variants to kind of validate my opinion in the change. And because of this I’ve learned to accept his fiddling with the play, though I’d like to give him zero credit he’s helped a lot in identifying these bottlenecks.

Maybe try asking her to run things by you before changing the play? Or just express that you feel walked over when she doesn’t communicate her changes when it’s your play?
Best of luck

Well the manager is in charge. And if the times are slow it makes sense to move people right? Just because everyone says they are fine doesn’t mean everything is.

It’s a lot more complex then that.. it’s more or less her moving around people to place her in a spot that’s convenient for her. Example, they don’t like to Bar so they’ll constantly move themselves to DTO or Warming to make it easier on her which isn’t fair for my fellow baristas. I wouldn’t mind the simple changes to help speed up things as long as she ran it by me first.. which she fails to do. And yes the SM is in charge of the store but when I’m playcaller I am in charge of the floor so when she moves things around it makes me feel like what the heck am I supposed to do. It’s complicated but that’s the jist of it lol
