but… she made it LESS convenient because she loaded the card and immediately used all of the balance on it when she could’ve just used the cash she was loading the card with in the first place

From my understanding she said to "top up ten" right?? honestly she could have been maybe a buck or two short in cash and the card already had a buck or two on it. point is that if she doesnt care about the stars then she doesn't care.
some people just want to keep the gift card alive by reloading it and then using it, otherwise some cards stop working after prolonged unuse. she may not have felt the need to reload it completely at this time, but found a card that she wants to keep alive for later.
honestly the card brings about convenience, it doesnt have be convenient every single time you look at the card nor does it always bring convenience for the barista. and even if she straight up misunderstood what the barista is saying who cares? i don't see why she's an idiot, and i dont see how its anyones problem. get her the coffee and move on to the next customer.
