Asking for my non-partner roommate: can you use a credit/debit card in the app to mobile order for pickup-only stores? (self.starbucksbaristas)

I'm hoping that people who do know -- either from a partner or user perspective, can answer this question. I don't want to accidentally put an order through the app if I don't need to.
My roommate strongly dislikes the pickup-only stores for many reasons, but one of them is that he cannot use his credit/debit card attached to the Starbucks app to pay, but the only option he has is to pay with the virtual Starbucks card. Apparently this isn't an issue at other stores and he is given an option during the payment section of the mobile ordering. He doesn't want to have the money pre-loaded onto the Starbucks card which is why he prefers to use his card (I can't explain his feelings towards mobile-order-food-apps, all I can say is that we're very opposite). I've never picked up anything from a pickup store and I rarely mobile order to begin with so I can't answer.
Is this a thing, can you not use credit/debit cards on the app when ordering at pickup-only stores? Is there a trick I have to show him?

i feel like you can? i think u just have to add ur card to the app. It doesn’t like, take out money? unless you use it? but it’s like in your app and says whatever brand (visa Mastercard discover etc) with a barcode and it just charges ur card

That's what I was saying, it doesn't make sense that it wouldn't be an option? But I don't want to click "check out" on my app to test it out if I'm not actually buying anything in case it actually sends the order through.
He says that on the Starbucks app, he has his card saved and prefers to use that vs using the Starbucks card (not sure what difference this makes? but regardless). He has his card set as the primary payment method. Mobile ordering at most stores, when he gets to the checkout/payment screen, he can choose which payment method he wants to use but I guess when he tries to order at the pickup stores it doesn't give him an option to choose?
I can't see why it wouldn't let him choose payment method which is why I wanted to ask around; like I believe he is telling me the accurate experience he is having but I also would believe that there is a possibility that something isn't being clicked correctly.

i work in a pickup/drive thru only store, and people use their credit/debit cards in the app to pay all the time. it might default to a starbucks card, but there should be a drop down menu where he can select his regular card to pay with. it's hard to say what the issue is, but he could always just ask the employees at the store why it's not working.
